I think the fact that a presidential candidate is being asked to explain his religious beliefs is a system of what is wrong in american, and many other societies today.
Your religion should be personal and should not have anything to do with your political agenda. However, human nature being what it is many people do impose their religious beliefs on society when they have political power. Our current President is an example.
