Program Note

[ Posted Friday, January 3rd, 2014 – 18:47 UTC ]

There will be no column today, sorry. I have been laid low by the flu, and can barely stay awake for a half an hour at a time. I really did plan on writing something today, but this has proven impossible. Hopefully I will be recovered enough by Monday to resume regular columns (starting with the Obama Poll Watch column for December).

Once again, my apologies for the disruption of our schedule, but it truly is beyond my control.

David, this goes out to you, being our resident stock expert and all...

Reports are coming out that billionaires are dropping their American stocks like crazy...

    http://www.moneynews.com/MKTNews/billionaires-dump-economist-stock/2012/08/29/id/450265?PROMO_CODE=110D8-1&utm_source=taboola&site=nationalreview

The worrisome part about it is that the stocks being dropped are stocks from companies whose largest stake is consumer purchases. Stocks like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Kraft Foods.

And it's not just one or two investors, it's a broad swath of investors worldwide..

That indicates to me that these investors believe that Americans, en masse, aren't going to have the income to purchase products from these companies..

    What are your thoughts???

My only beef is that FNC refers to the guy as a "Trekkie"...

The appropriate term would be "Trekker".....

No legal right. Moral/ethical right? I say we do have a moral right to avoid any corporate censorship that's actually effective in suppressing speech rather than merely requiring a change of venue.

So for example if you wanted me to refrain from using your site to expound my beliefs about the real culpability for the 9/11 attacks, that would be fine: I can take up the subject somewhere else. But if the MPAA were to expand its ratings regime to books and the internet, and increased its efficacy beyond what it was at its zenith (or nadir, depending on your perspective), so that it were impractical to get an effective soapbox in any medium for ideas the MPAA deems too close to Communism or adverse to the interests of its major sponsors, that would be deplorable. Likewise if the publication of books required an imprimatur from a Church: any institution with excessive power should have its power be limited, not just the state.

    Welcome to my world. :D

    JL,

i also noticed that green holiday meter hasn't moved in awhile; hope we in the CW community haven't been overly lax in our holiday giving spirit!

Unfortunately, it's not been a banner year for MFCCFL.. Not even a little stick pin flag year... Totally crappy year, in fact..

Couple that with my wife (and sister in law and daughter in law) got snared in that big Target hack and it's been a downright pisser of a holiday...

But the sun will come out tomorrow.. At least after we hit mid-20s in the temps over night!!

Hell, they are even spotting SNOW OWLS in Jax, FL!!!!

And so it goes and so it goes....

But enough whining... Let's have some GOOD news.. :D

    To all -

Thanks for the kind thoughts. It was one of those 72-hr things which hits you fast but also leaves fast, kind of like being hit by a frieght train rolling downhill. I could barely focus enough to type on Thursday and Friday, but although shaky I think I'm good to go for today's OPW column.

I did indeed get a rash of donations (including one very generous one!) in the past week, and have now updated the thermometer (you may have to reload the page to see it update). Normally, we'd have wrapped up the pledge drive by now, but I'm still picking up the pieces here so I'm going to let it run for another week I think, in the hopes of meeting our goal (and keeping the site ad-free for another year!).

In any case, got to get to work on today's graphs... more later, and thanks for the well-wishing, everyone!

    :-)
