Program Note

[ Posted Sunday, February 8th, 2015 – 00:14 UTC ]

I will be running a few live tests this weekend, updating the site's code. There may be temporary interruptions of service, which may result in you getting incomprehensible "error messages" instead of seeing the site. I apologize for these in advance, should this happen to you. I'm working hard to update some things behind the scenes here (things that won't change what you see, but rather how the site operates internally), so I apologize in advance for any inconvenience you may experience this weekend.

    Chris,

I was joking about Wikipedia, you know, as I am always wont to do ... did you ever get the thing?

Can you give us an idea of some of the behind the scenes changes??

    Michale -

I'd rather not go into too much detail here about the truly behind-the-scenes stuff (don't want to encourage spammers), but the one change I made that was futzing things up this weekend was a very basic one.

I'm beginning to go through my code and update a few things, now that I have a better understanding of the PHP language it is written in. A few of my old hacks were pretty brute-force and can be tightened up considerably. This stuff is only really of interest to a programmer, though, because for now it won't change the site any at all.

The new code introduced this weekend was for which banner appears at the top of your page. For most pages, this is the grumpy cat. But there are two others -- the "Obama Poll Watch" and "Friday Talking Points" header images.

I fixed a minor bug while cleaning this code up, so the FTP one should show up more frequently. Go to the "Aritcle Categories" sidebar (over on the left) and click FTP to see it.

So, as I said, a minor change. But if anyone is seeing the wrong header (or no header, or error messages), please let me know right away!

    :-)

This will be an ongoing process, I should mention. And there may be changes in the site's look and feel (minor ones) coming along in the next few months, too. No promises to fix all bugs, but I do feel a lot more confident with PHP now so maybe I can at least fix some of them...

    Further note:

Many moons ago, I removed the top menu item "Comments RSS" because (1) nobody was using it, and (2) it was being archived on third-party sites which led to a problem or two for me.

Problem was, I forgot to remove the link at the bottom of every article here (in the line with the date at the end of the article).

So it's gone now, replaced by a "permalink" item, for a permanent link to the article to use if you're pasting a link to it elsewhere.

A change probably nobody would have ever noticed if I hadn't pointed it out. I mention this because this is the level of things I'm fixing -- piddly little minor stuff that you likely won't even notice.

If I get more confident, and have more time, I'm going to move on to things like fixing that woefully-inadequate "Preview Comment" button...
