Open Debate Thread

[ Posted Sunday, October 9th, 2016 – 15:27 UTC ]

I don't think I've ever done this before, but I'm creating this article just as a placeholder -- an "open thread."

This will allow everyone to comment about the debate tonight, without having to scroll through the already-long comment thread on Friday's article.

So sit back, pop the popcorn, and have fun watching the debate tonight, and if you feel inclined to offer up your thoughts, this is the place to do so. Enjoy!

They all support Trump. One of them says Trump only spoke "words" versus actions. How could this woman possibly know what Trump has done? I guess it's true that some women just don't mind being used by men. Steve Bannon of Breitbart is seen snickering in the background.

Was at a debate party. Found the 90 minutes painful to watch. Hillary has to be the grown-up while this giant orange wanna-be dictator simply, literally, throws insults at her. Stupid, childish insults, but unrelenting. The Donald said virtually nothing substantive the entire time but he threw out "disgusting" and "a disaster" a lot.

But speaking of disgust, I'd have to say that word describes the reaction in the room. People holding their hands over their mouths in shock. People just staring at the TV in disbelief at this jackass stalking around threatening to jail her. Another word: appalled.

For you Trek fans, Hillary was like "the Empath" -- having to absorb pain in order to save someone else, in this case, the free world.

I already felt great respect for Hillary, but her going through these ordeals has intensified it.

Meanwhile, Trump's little press conference stunt and attempt to use Bill's past to knock her down pretty much landed like a lead balloon. After the debate I realized I couldn't even remember how she answered it -- I remembered that he had done a word-salad assault about it and she responded, but it got lost in the rest of the debate. I remembered liking her response at the time but it didn't stick because the whole thing just blew by. And that was Trump's big whammy.

It became just another "everything she does is stupid and a failure" slur.

This night wasn't entertaining. Donald wasn't fun to watch in any way. Hillary handled herself very well. Trump pulled back on the total collapse of his first debate performance and concentrated on venom (intermixed with many of his usual stupidities and all the alt-right Breitbart junk). He also sniffed a lot and whined several times about how unfair the moderators were. There were several comments comparing him to a petulant child -- no surprise there.

The moderators were, I think, pretty good, all things considered.

CNN poll give Clinton a decisive win: 57 to 34. Sentient beings weigh in. Deplorables remain deplorable. So there's that.

    chaszzzbrown [35] -

OK, now THAT was funny! Nice one...

    :-)

OK, everyone here's my general take on the debate:

Trump did better than first debate, didn't pick a fight with Rosie O'Donnell once! OK, snarky, but he was a bit more focused and less random. Unlike the first debate, the first half hour was Trump's weakest (last time around it was the last 30 minutes).

Trump tried to apologize and move on from the video shocker, but didn't notably succeed, especially when he went after Bill, which didn't really work, and when he bizarrely tried to work ISIS into his answer about the Access Hollywood video.

Trump looked antsy. Walking around aimlessly, gripping the chair, grimacing, interrupting, picking fights with moderators. None of which was a good look for him. Not to mention his constant sniffing.

Trump's answers were as content-free as usual. Lotta word salad there.

But, overall, it looks like the debate prep sessions (that he denies are actually happening) have actually done him some good, as he did at least give the appearance of being more focused tonight.

Hillary was Hillary. Lots of wonky answers that prove she's deeply thought about all kinds of issues, defended her own record very well, and refused to be baited by Trump at all (which must have required superhuman resistance to temptation).

Hillary did a MUCH better job at relating to the questioners on a human level. Trump didn't even try this, but Hillary directly addressed questioners and gave her answers directly to them.

Moderators were overwhelmed at times, but forceful at other times. Better job than Lester Holt, that's for sure. Trump looked petty whining about them.

One thing I have been hearing, that I think is slightly unfair, is that Trump was "stalking" Clinton. Well, some of this (as my wife pointed out) was because of a camera angle. When Clinton got a question from the left (Trump's) side of the room, she walked over and addressed the person. But from where the camera was located, it made it appear that Trump was looming over her shoulder. He was actually staying put -- she was the one who moved into the foreground of his camera shot.

Now, I'm not saying Trump wasn't peripatetic at times on stage, but at least some of it wasn't really fair, because she was the one doing the moving. But the meme is already spreading like wildfire, so tomorrow I expect lots of "Trump stalks Hillary" stories.

I don't think this debate changed anyone's mind who supports either candidate. On that measure, it was a draw. But I do think Trump concentrated on shoring up his base support, while Clinton was trying to convince undecideds. Whether she's successful or not remains to be seen, but I think she did a pretty good job of attempting that goal tonight.

    Just a few random thoughts....

Martha Raddatz. I couldn't remember her name last night, but she did a fine job. So did AC. They were largely successful in corralling the candidates to their time slots and they asked pertinent follow-up questions.

I think Trump benefited from the latter more than Clinton. Trump really can't keep a train of thought going for more than about a minute, after which he usually strikes off on a number tangents, leaving the original thought in the dust and not completing any of the tangents either. A noun, a verb, then a sputter of word salad. The follow-ups got him back on track, and he seemed less scatter brained.

As I expected, the debate did not seem to move the meter much. Betfair gives Trump about the same odds this morning as he had last night just before the debate. This may have been enough to stop his slide, but even that is not clear yet. Same thing over on PredictIt. The markets are typically reliable leading indicators of where the polls are heading. So, it looks like last night was a draw. Both sides defended their turf, but Clinton has a lot more turf than Trump, with 30 days to go. I call this a strategic win for Clinton (still strong favorite), but not a nail in the coffin for Trump. Or at least not another nail, maybe Trump's Pussy Riot was THE nail, time will tell.

Could'ja move that bar a little higher? heh. Two can play that game: if Trump were half as clever as he says he is, why isn't HE 50 points ahead, instead of whining daily that he isn't being given a fair shake? Real men don't bitch about life being unfair to them, especially to their private pilot.

There's no point re-litigating Republican fever-dreams. That won't move the dial either for Trump or Hillary.

What could move the dial will be Trump's demeanor. Hillary understated her case last night: the number of Republicans who have jumped ship on Trump is up to historic proportions. He has no newspaper endorsements, none. Even Goldwater had newspaper endorsements. And the reason they can't support him is the same thing driving everyone else away: the man is a crass boor. I've heard folks say that he was charming in person. What most folks saw last night was their boorishly opinionated uncle, pacing and making faces and noises and threats rather than engaging in civilized conversation.

There certainly are a lot of Trump Stalker stories today. There are many women talking about how they've been attacked or molested during their lives.

I think you're underestimating the affect Trump's groping remarks have had on many people. I know women, and men, who have been molested. Trump's offhanded bragging about being able to grope women at will, with the added spice of Billy Bush laughing about it, speaks to the core of many people who have suffered such behaviors. And speaks to the core of those who know and love the victims.

His relentless insults and physical moves on stage helped cement his image as a brute. And it doesn't matter whether his moves were intentional or an accident of camera angles -- it played poorly. Probably because of his facial expressions and the contrast between him glowering and her talking directly to someone.

So it tells you, it tells you in many ways he doesn't want to say anything to his supporters because he doesn't want to turn them off. Because he understands that the reason why they are voting for him is because he has tapped into this anger. The problem is leadership has never been about taking people's anger and using it to get them to vote for you. If it is, it's a dangerous style of leadership.... I believe Donald Trump as our nominee is going to shatter and fracture the Republican Party and the conservative movement," he said.

In other words, Camp Clinton wants Sheeple..

I don't remember "Camp Clinton" demeaning government and encouraging homeschooling and criticizing the educated elites, do you? Why would the "establishment" candidate demean the establishment?

Read the whole document, why don't you, and for your own good, stop believing all the bullshit you're being spoon fed on the right-wing fringe. *LOL* :)

Well, you are a hot bag of wind; I'll grant you that. And, of course, you'll always be beneath the entire group here; so I'll grant you that also. :)

Who said that I believed Bill? Oh wait, I forget that you are omniscient and know what everyone on here thinks and believes. I know that Bill never bragged to any reporters that he sexually assaulted these women, and Ken Starr couldn't conclude that he did anything inappropriate, but that doesn't mean some of it couldn't have occurred. There is just one problem with focusing on Bill....NONE of THAT MATTERS!!!

This isn't about Bill, although Trumpettes like yourself don't have any choice but to attack Bill since the person actually running for office has never been accused of sexual assaulting anyone! Trump's first wife accused him of rape, and only after the divorce settlement was finalized did she walk back her claims. Trump's attorney at the time argued that a husband cannot rape someone that they are married to, not that Trump hadn't done what Ivanna claimed. Trump is dealing with a lawsuit now that the victim claims Trump raped her when she was only 13.

    By omission, you did..

But, hay... Do you believe Bill Clinton when he said he didn't rape or sexually assault anyone??

It's a simple YES or NO question...

There is just one problem with focusing on Bill....NONE of THAT MATTERS!!!

OF COURSE it doesn't matter to you and the other sheeple...

Because Bill has a '-D' after his name..

It DOES matter to decent patriotic Americans who care more for country and don't give a damn about any Party...

This isn't about Bill, although Trumpettes like yourself don't have any choice but to attack Bill since the person actually running for office has never been accused of sexual assaulting anyone!

No, she just aided and abetted and then attacked Bill's victims to destroy them...

THAT is relevant to the campaign, as much as you would like to pretend otherwise..

Trump is dealing with a lawsuit now that the victim claims Trump raped her when she was only 13.

And, of course, you BELIEVE that...

Like I said.. It's all wishful thinking on your part..

You are lock-step with the Democrat Party.. No original thinking required on this issue...
