Primary Season's Last Lap
The 2018 primary election season draws to a close this week, with the final three states holding their primaries in back-to-back fashion. Today New Hampshire will vote, tomorrow Rhode Island will weigh in, and then on Thursday New Yorkers will get the final say. This seems fairly late in the year to still be holding primaries, considering that general election races have already been going on in other states for months, but I guess somebody's got to go last.
The most consequential races for those looking for a national narrative will happen in New York, for governor and for attorney general. This isn't to say there are no races to watch in the other two states, but they don't align as precisely with the "Progressive versus Establishment Democrats" narrative as closely as the New York races do.
The sitting governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, is getting a strong challenge from his left. Cuomo still harbors dreams of running for president one day, but outside of New York the only people who know his name seem to be the ones donating to his primary opponent. That doesn't exactly bode well for his chances nationwide.
Cuomo is being challenged by actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running as a full-on Progressive. Even if she loses on Thursday, she has already had an outsized effect on both the race and on Cuomo's governing approach. She has yanked him to the left, on many individual political issues. This may all change if Cuomo wins the Democratic nomination, though, since he may very well tack right back to the center (either for the general election or after winning another term).
Polling shows Cuomo with a huge lead, at this point. Nixon has made serious inroads, but if the polling is to be believed, she's going to fall far short. Now, Progressives will point to polling in other primary races that Progressives won, in the hopes that the New York numbers will also prove to be wrong. We'll see, on Thursday night, who is right.
The other big race is for the state's attorney general, and this is a race where a Progressive might just win the day. Zephyr Teachout has been unabashedly liberal, even before Bernie Sanders made it cool. She's run for office before, but has fallen short. But in a very crowded Democratic field, she seems to now be the frontrunner. She is promising a full-throated investigation into Donald Trump's business empire (which is located in New York City), which will build on the work of the current attorney general. This is a popular position to take with Democratic voters these days, and it may have given her the edge this time around.
The media (and I do include myself in that) has been largely focused on the Progressive/Establishment Democratic divide, because who doesn't love a good us-versus-them storyline? Looking back at the entire primary season, Progressives have chalked up a number of victories, but they've also lost a whole lot of races as well. Progressives haven't swept the board or anything, to put this another way. They've managed to unseat two Democratic House members in the primaries, but no sitting senators. Progressives did win some important gubernatorial primaries, however, and they've also seen some success in races for open seats (it's always easier to win an open seat than to take on an incumbent). All in all, though, it wouldn't be correct to call this movement the "Tea Party of the left" quite yet, because while there are some solid Progressive candidates still running, it is still nowhere near the size of the Tea Party revolution in 2010. There are new faces to vote for, but it'd be overstating it to say that any single one of them is now "the new face of the Democratic Party."
Still, we will have some interesting contests which will test the theory that running on big and bold ideas is better than running on centrism and "can't we all just get along" moderation. Win or lose, a whole lot of Democratic candidates thinking about running in 2020 (from president on down) will be watching these races very closely. If Progressives manage some big wins, the 2020 race will reflect this. If Progressives go down in defeat, then look for 2020 candidates to be far less bold in their platforms.
Looking back over the last few months, there are a few notable observations to make about 2018's primary season. Democrats, almost spontaneously, are running a real 50-state strategy (remember Howard Dean, anyone?). They are running in races that they used to just concede. There have been an incredible number of first-time candidates, many of whom were so fed up with seeing Donald Trump get elected that they decided it was time to personally participate in the political process. There have also been record numbers of both women and minorities running in Democratic primaries. The party was always much more diverse than the Republicans, and that is now being reflected even more in the candidates themselves. This will probably be a boon to turnout in the general election.
Turnout on the Democratic side is already through the roof, even in the primaries. If the voters maintain the enthusiasm they've shown all the way through to November, then the big blue wave will become a reality. Democratic voters (and many independents, as well) are just itching to send Donald Trump a big message of rejection. In normal midterm years, Democratic voters are pretty lethargic and don't show up to vote in large numbers. This is decidedly not a normal midterm, however. Enthusiasm levels are through the roof already.
The biggest takeaway from the primaries so far is the strength of women voters. Female Democratic candidates have been making enormous gains almost across the board, and they are poised to take on the Republicans in November. But my guess is that the real story in November is going to be the turnout levels of minority women and suburban women. This could be crucial to the success of Democratic candidates in many states, in fact, and even more House districts.
For minority women voters, a shift in turnout numbers will help Democrats the most, since minority voters are overwhelmingly Democratic. The difference between a normal midterm turnout and setting new turnout records might propel a lot of those minority candidates into office. But, as I said, this will solely be a function of turnout.
For suburban women, the picture is different. Suburban women and married middle-class women have long been a source of strength for the Republicans. In fact, with all the gerrymandering the party has done, they've even gone out of their way to carve out plenty of suburban districts that they considered safe. But this year the women's vote has dramatically shifted to the Democrats. Male voters are much more likely to excuse some of Trump's worst behavior than women are. Add to that the shift that's about to happen on the Supreme Court, and suburban women are understandably highly motivated to vote this year. Which has meant that a whole lot of House districts Republicans used to consider safe are now up for grabs. This is what is necessary to take back the House, and when all the exit polling gets analyzed my guess is that suburban women voters who shift from voting Republican to voting for a Democrat are going to be the biggest factor in November's outcome. The media has already used both "The Year Of The Woman" and the rather derogatory "soccer moms" theme in previous election analyses, so perhaps they'll come up with a snappy new label for the effect this time around. But if Democrats wind up doing as well as is now predicted, women voters are going to be key to their success.
This week's primaries are so late in the game that to a large extent, the voters have already made up their minds. Perceptions about the economy, the state of the country, and the direction the country should be heading in have all solidified and will likely not change much in the next two months, barring some sort of earth-shaking event. Which, with Donald Trump in charge, is always possible.
Trump himself has doubled down on making the midterm election a referendum on him. He has been eagerly going to rallies all over the country, but when he speaks he hardly even mentions the candidate he's supposed to be there to support. It's all about him, as it always is with Trump. By doing so, he is tying the results closely to his own popularity. If Republicans pull off an astonishing victory and keep control of both the House and Senate, Trump will no doubt claim not just the lion's share but indeed all of the credit. But if the Republicans have a very bad election night, Trump has made it impossible to distance himself from the result.
No longer will he be able to claim that he has a sweeping mandate from the voters. He never really did (after all, Hillary Clinton won three million more votes than he did), but a solid rejection in 2018 at the ballot box is going to be tough for Trump to pin on someone else. Especially since he's campaigning so much. Trump does have a positive effect on Republican primary races, to be sure, but he's somehow internalized that into thinking he's got the same magic touch in the general election. Being proved wrong about this is going to be a serious political and emotional blow to Trump.
Democrats, so far, show no signs of complacency about November. The feeling of "we've already got this one sewn up" simply does not exist among Democratic voters. They know they've got to turn out on Election Day. They know this midterm is far more important than most. They don't need anyone to motivate them to get to the polls, because their enthusiasm level is already quite high. Trump himself is the grand motivator for Democratic voters, in fact.
Most of the stories about the Progressive-versus-Establishment rift in the Democratic Party miss a crucial fact. When the primary is over, no matter which side won the day, the Democratic voters are glad to fall in line behind the nominee. There is an overriding concern that is far bigger than any intraparty discord, and his name is Donald Trump. Progressive voters are just as enthusiastic about voting for Establishment candidates when their favored candidate lost the primary, and vice versa. Getting Democrats elected is far more important this time around than getting any particular flavor of Democrat elected. Which is a good point to end this primary season overview, as we all get ready to watch the final three states' returns come in. Party unity has so far been largely overlooked throughout primary season, but the ability to close ranks and get behind the nominated candidates has so far been remarkable. The voters know what is truly important this time around -- sending Donald Trump the loudest, most unmistakable message as is humanly possible. And that's something all Democrats are already seriously committed to.

Lol... You're joking, surely. Trump has already chosen who goes under the bus for the November debacle-in-waiting. His own base. He tells them at every meeting.
It's almost like he wants the GOP to take a hit in the midterms, it'll certainly give him the obstructionists he's always complaining about, only now he can legitimately call them the 'Democrats'

The Democrats appear to have given up on their long-anticipated “blue wave.” This was the wave of sound and fury that was to sweep out everything before it. The wave, alas, is still on the far horizon, if that’s not merely a mirage of whine and wail, and the Democrats are left with only manufactured hysteria.
They’ve done well in their primaries, with Democrats bashing Democrats with gay abandon. They’ve forgotten there’s a difference between intramural and varsity sports. Varsity politics is neither Mr. Dooley’s bean-bag nor a frightened mother’s soccer.
The rest of Mr. Dooley’s famous observation bears repeating to show how the rules of politics have changed: “Sure, politics ain’t bean-bag,” he wrote a century ago. “‘Tis a man’s game, an’ women, childern, cripples an’ prohybitionists’d do well to keep out of it.”
The intramural Democrats have given up their old base and America as we have all known it since the creation, and linked their fortunes this year to those who think the America of Washington, Lincoln, FDR and Reagan is past the sell-by date, that only an infusion of ideals and values of a European welfare state can make the nation worthy of Maxine Waters and Colin Kaepernick. And of course of Pocahontas, too. We must not forget Pocahontas and her dream of a Pocahontas-Maxine ticket in 2020 to harness the power of undiluted estrogen to restore the party’s fortunes. 4/12

Notwithstanding the fact that it's obviously primary season versus the general election, how exactly does an elected Independent Senator of the State of Vermont get "bitch-slapped" by the Republican candidate for a congressional seat in the State of New Hampshire? That is simply not possible under any scenario.
However, I believe Bernie's son was running to secure the nomination of the Democratic Party for a congressional seat in NH, but even so that still has absolutely zero bearing on the fact that Eddie Edwards won the Republican Party primary for that New Hampshire congressional district as these two candidates were obviously not running against each other.
Apparently, there IS some justice in this great country.. :D

"The Giuliani backed candidate, Eddie Edwards, IS A DEMOCRAT you simple sad and pathetic excuse for a human being..."
UH NO. You are WRONG.
The winner among the 11 Democrats seeking the party’s nomination in Tuesday’s primary for the open seat in the 1st Congressional District of New Hampshire, which included Levi Sanders, the son of Bernie Sanders, was Chris Pappas, a former state legislator and current member of the Executive Council that advises New Hampshire’s governor. He is vying to be the state’s first openly gay member of Congress.
In the REPUBLICAN RACE, former Liquor Commission official EDDIE EDWARDS defeated state Sen. Andy Sanborn for the party’s nomination.

A Rudy Giuliani-backed congressional candidate seeking to make history as New Hampshire's first black congressman emerged from a crowded field to win the state's GOP primary on Tuesday.
Eddie Edwards, a Navy veteran, won convincingly over state Sen. Andy Sanborn, who had the endorsement of Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul.
Giuliani called Edwards a “strong conservative who believes in low taxes and is a supporter of the ‘America First’ agenda of President Trump.”

Very well done, sir.
I'm still waiting on the moron's explanation for how exactly the GOP's candidate for the NH-1 congressional district primaries "bitch-slapped" the currently elected Senator of the State of Vermont who is an Independent candidate running in a wholly different state for a wholly different chamber of Congress.
I'd also be curious to know why anyone with two brain cells to rub together would insist that Rudy Giuliani... the attorney of the Republican POTUS... would throw his support behind a Democrat?

I feel that way too, especially when vitriol becomes seen as a virtue, not only completely overshadowing any kind of civic discourse, but even becomes more important than making sure that the facts you are trying to discuss are accurate. Where is the enhancement of understanding in that?

I find it hard to equate calling out a person's POSTS as misinformed and ignorant with calling the PERSON a "crackwhore", "moronic idiot", and "dumbshit". There's a difference between attacking a person's ideas and attacking the person, a difference that you may have missed since, while Kick was clearly walking a fine line, and may have inched across it a bit, you ran over it at full tilt and are doing a dance on the other side.

Yes, and you were also the one who began the insults as per your usual modus operandi. You just hurl the trolling insults at the group as a whole using the term "ya'all" and so you therefore feel like those insults aren't supposed to count. When somebody comes along and corrects you or gives it to you right back in your general direction, you begin the "vile and disgusting" (your terms) insults and the whiny victim routine on cue.
You will note that I only repeated the words emanating from your very own keyboard and used quotations in so doing... and once again noted your projection in your self-chosen descriptors. If you don't like your own words quoted and pushed back in your general direction to describe you and yours, then I highly suggest you stop allowing them to escape from your brain and/or your fingers. :)

Let me ask you a sincere question. I hope you have the integrity to respond.
Is it POSSIBLE that the fact that you and Victoria are the same, Party loyalty wise, is influencing your judgement here??
Nothing else would explain the fact that Victoria's disgusting attacks on my wife and children are acceptable to you whereas my brutal personal attacks on Victoria and ONLY Victoria are not acceptable to you..
I mean, look at things logically...

Wrong. You attack the entirety of Weigantia in regular fashion using your oft repeated terms of "Party slaves," "bigots," etc. When anyone gives it back to you in your own chosen verbiage, you begin squealing, whining, and moaning like a stuck little piggy. :)
Is it POSSIBLE that the fact that you and Victoria are the same, Party loyalty wise, is influencing your judgement here??
I'm not a Democrat, and you're accusing everyone of party bigotry and proving my point. Thank you ever so much yet again. :)

Sorry, I don't read the comments religiously like you do I guess, nor do I tend to remember posts made weeks ago. In fact, it's very rare that I read anything you write because so much of it is spam bullshit that I've simply gotten used to scrolling past most comments with your name attached. In fact, it seems like you could have done something similar when that person started posting things you found disagreeable, and perhaps alerted a moderator to the offense if you believed it was severe enough. That's the most widely accepted solution I've seen across the various forums I've visited, not responding in kind or taking it to the next level. That merely makes the forum even more toxic for all involved, generally either leading to the death of the forum or bannings in order to rein things in again. Neither are particularly pleasant options, but we're certainly getting to that point.
Also, fuck you for constant calling me and the other posters here "slaves".
The inside scoop on why Trump's visit to Ireland was cancelled:
The resemblance between Donald Trump and Father Jack Hackett of the beloved Craggy Island sitcom was simply too obvious and too close to the mark for an Irish audience:

Also, fuck you for constant calling me and the other posters here "slaves".
Yes, and he does this near daily, Bleyd, but it's not considered an insult by his estimation because he directs it toward the group as a whole using the terms "ya'all" and "Weigantians" along with quite a repertoire of oft repeated and regularly hurled other choice insults in his usual modus operandi.
I keep thinking one day he might put on his thinking cap and finally catch on to him hurling insults at the Weigantia family being the equivalent of somebody using his same chosen words and tossing it back at his family... but alas he is ever the slow learner... so here we are. :)
Bleyd,
All of what you proposed has been tried, up to and including my ignoring Victoria's attacks..
It didn't stop. No one stepped up or stepped in and her attacks only escalated..
So I took matters into my own hands and responded in kind..
It's a fact that, if Victoria stops, it will ALL stop...
Also, fuck you for constant calling me and the other posters here "slaves".
heh Fair enough..
Ya'all quit calling me "troll" and I'll quit calling ya'all slaves..
Fair deal??
But you didn't answer my question..
Are vile and disgusting attacks on a commenter's wife and children appropriate for this forum??
A simple and unequivocal YES or NO is all that is required..
Also, if you are married with children.. How would YOU respond to such vile and disgusting attacks on YOUR wife and children??
Sorry, I don't read the comments religiously like you do I guess, nor do I tend to remember posts made weeks ago.
And yet, you feel that you DO enough to make the comment that no one but ME has ever brought up my wife and children..
So, don't you think an apology is warranted for your mistaken ASSUMPTION??
So, you didn't think that Victoria has ever made such attacks on my wife and children..
Now that I have proven that she HAS, what is your response???

I should think the correct answer would be... ahem: They are your "vile and disgusting attacks." If you don't enjoy your self-chosen descriptors hurled back in your general direction, then I highly suggest you stop allowing those words to escape from your brain and/or fingers.
If you're going to hurl your insults at anyone, I can assure you that you are punching your ticket to becoming on the receiving end of your own chosen words right back at you.
In short: Don't like it? Don't do it! :)
If you're going to hurl your insults at anyone, I can assure you that you are punching your ticket to becoming on the receiving end of your own chosen words right back at you.
And the crack whore STILL doesn't get it..
Hurl all the words you want at me, all day long.. I'll simply respond in kind..
But hurl disgusting and vile attacks against my wife!!??? MY CHILDREN!!!???
Then NO attack, NO name-calling is out of bounds..
Your only recourse is to end your own pathetic and useless life.. We already know you can't procreate, barren scumbag that you are..
Now do the world a further favor and just end your life..
You won't be missed.. By anyone.. You'll be just one more suicide that people will say, "Whew.. Glad it's gone.."

"It didn't stop. No one stepped up or stepped in..."
Have you ever wondered why that might be? Have you considered that perhaps your constant jabs and insults, your obnoxious posting habits, and your general air of condescension might have turned the people here against you? That they, in some small way, might think that you deserve every insult hurled your way as comeuppance for the years they've spent enduring you here? Perhaps if you'd like people to come to your aid, you should try not to give them so very many reasons to ignore you.
Just my two cents.
Have you ever wondered why that might be?

So... What you are saying is that the girl who wears short skirts, the girl who is a constant tease..
That THAT girl "deserves" to be raped???
Is THAT what you are really saying???
Or is it even simpler than that??
Party loyalty is stronger than common decency..
THAT is what you are saying..
No... I have NEVER wondered.. I have always known that, with this group, Party slavery is much MUCH stronger than ANY sense of decency...
ANYTHING is justified... Disgusting, perverse and terrorist-style attacks against innocent family members..
ALL of that is acceptable when it's done against someone who doesn't toe your Party line..
No, Bleyd.. I have NEVER wondered.. I always knew this was the case..
But, until now.. No one here had the courage to concede that which is blatantly obvious...
I admire your courage in conceding this ugly and pathetic fact about you people..
PARTY UBER ALLES

I wanna make a strictly apolitical suggestion. If you want to -or need to- keep up with the hurricane, keep an eye on Levi Cohen's tweets.
Here's an example of why I suggest it, given that both US and European models now have the storm taking a hard left turn and threatening SC and GA. This was posted by him
(@TropicalTidbits) about 2PM EST yesterday:
Given the trends toward a strong ridge north of #Florence near the time of landfall, the 12Z ECMWF illustrates how more of a left turn may occur and keep South Carolina and Georgia in the line of fire.
If you're more sensible and aren't glued to Twitter at the eyes and fingers, you can check in on https://www.tropicaltidbits.com and read the tweets' text there as well as get his daily briefings.
LB,
I am something of a weather-phile.. I showed that southward jaunt in my FLORENCE UPDATE yesterday..
Today, as you point out, that southward jaunt is even more pronounced and will impact GA and NE Florida...

Party loyalty? Do you even know what party I belong to? Of course you don't! I don't belong to a party, I've never registered with one, and I've never voted a straight party ticket. I've supported both Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama in presidential elections and before his retirement, I consistently supported Libertarian Ron Paul as my congressman. I support ideas, actions, and people, not parties. Your actions have been repugnant and your ideas objectionable, and while I do not know you personally, I'm not inclined to believe that I'd like you much either, so you do not have my support. I suspect that many others around here feel similarly. It's not an issue of party allegiance, it's simply that people who go out of their way to irritate (or worse) other people should not be surprised when those other people don't go out of their way to stick up for them. We're only human after all.

Here is why I simply can't believe your sincerity, Bleyd..
You go on and on about MY actions and COMPLETELY ignore the FACT of Victoria's gross and perverse attacks on my family..
I have asked you about it SEVERAL times but you ignore it..
THAT proves to me that you don't really care about vile and disgusting attacks, unless it's someone who you politically disagree with, who is making the attacks..
Until you can be FAIR about things, this discussion is pointless because you are bigoted against those who don't toe your Party line..
This is what the FACTS prove beyond any doubt..
You are operating under the mistaken assumption that I CARE if people like me or not or if they support me or not.
NOTHING could be further from the truth..
But you go on and on about what is an is not appropriate, yet you continue to ignore what Victoria has done..
That PROVES that you don't care about anything but the Party agenda..
Victoria acts WORSE than I do when it comes to disgusting and vile attacks but YOU are perfectly OK with that..
It's only MY attacks, the attacks of someone who doesn't toe your Party line.. *THOSE* are the attacks you care about.
So, answer me this? Why should I care what you say when what you say is so obviously biased and bigoted???
M57
If you didn't care, why are you constantly harping on what people do or don't say about you? Beyond that, you're missing the point. It doesn't matter whether you care about the opinions that other people hold of you, their opinion of you will still effect the way they act towards you. If you want to be treated respectfully, make yourself respectable. From the posts that I have read, you've done anything but. And if it bothers you so much, perhaps it's time for you to take your leave?
If you want to be treated respectfully, make yourself respectable.
SOrry, been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
It doesn't work..
And you STILL ignore the point.
Do you or do you NOT condemn Victoria's disgusting and vile attacks on my wife and children..
It's a simple question, yet you constantly refuse to answer..
And do you know WHY you refuse to answer??
Because your answer "NO, I don't condemn Victoria's attacks on your wife and children because YOU DESERVE those attacks for being a Trump supporter!!!" totally negates ANY claim you are making right now..
And if it bothers you so much, perhaps it's time for you to take your leave?
Says the guy who is complaining that things bother him so much.. :D
Hay, Bleyd.. If it bothers you so much, perhaps it's time for you to take your leave?

Craggy Island often gets quantum entangled with real life.
The Parochial House would make a fine HQ for a Rump Trump Government in exile. Just big enough to contain the entire Trump Family...which is all the "staff" he needs or wants.

You're right, I think it is time I took my leave. This place has long been difficult to stomach due to your incessant spewage, but now it's become intolerable. Thank you Mr. Weigant for giving us this excellent blog, but I feel I must depart. I hope that in the future this blog will become someonwhere that those with more progressive and liberal ideologies can gather to discuss the ways to promote such, but that time is not now.
Congratulations Michale, you have won.
I hope that in the future this blog will become someonwhere that those with more progressive and liberal ideologies can gather to discuss the ways to promote such, but that time is not now.
And THEREIN lies the crux of your problem.. You want an partisan echo chamber where you can spew bigoted Party diatribe, free from ANY contradiction, free from ANY facts and free from ANY reality based discussion whatsoever..
Yer right.. This place is NOT that and I am damn proud I have a hand in making sure it ISN'T that..
On the other hand, you have proven beyond ANY doubt that, despite your claims to the contrary, you are a Party drone thru and thru... Supported George Bush my ass... :D
Congratulations Michale, you have won.
I always do..
And do you know WHY I always do??
Because I have FACTS and REALITY on my side..
And those who constantly attack me and attack my family?? All they have is Party slavery and bigotry and hatred and intolerance..
It should interest you to know that I am not the ONLY one who is constantly attacked and demonized around here.. Several other Weigantians are also attacked..
And do you know what ALL of us have in common??
We don't toe ya'all's Party line..
Regardless, I wish you well in your future endeavors.. Hopefully you learned a valuable lesson in all this..
If you want decency and respect, then BE decent and respectful. Condemn ALL of those who are not decent and respectful.. Don't just condemn the ones who don't toe your Party line..
Good luck to you and yours..
One consensus has emerged during this process: A significant majority of Americans want the Senate to decide on this appointment one way or other -- and not, as Judiciary Committee Democrats insisted, delay things indefinitely. A poll done in July found that 62 percent of Americans wanted a vote on Trump’s nominee before the midterm elections. This finding suggests that Democrats might benefit by losing their Senate war of words against this nominee, especially if there is a blue wave already building. Bloodshed over the Supreme Court nominating process could turn that water red.

And of course, the whining snowflake troll has to misrepresent the post while whining to other posters.
My response:
So now you're posting this whining shit of yours again except you're making it appear as though I was the one who used that language when I absolutely did not. That was all your handiwork, and now you're trying to pass it off as something I said. Big surprise.
That's the problem, Michale. You lie and hurl insults incessantly and then whine to other posters like a little bitch portraying it as if I was the one who used that language toward you when the fact of the matter is that it was EXACTLY the other way around.
http://www.chrisweigant.com/2018/08/31/ftp498/#comment-125862
Posting this utter fabrication and whining like a toddler to Bleyd and insisting this was my language is exactly the type of fabricating bullshit you do here. If you are the one who posted the "vile and disgusting language," (your definition), why are you whining like a little bitch about having your own words hurled back in your general direction?
It's both pathetic and utter asinine bullshit all rolled up into one big STINKING LIE, and indicative of the exact type of bullshit you spew ad nauseam while whining about language and playing victim all over the board.
They're your words, you effing asshat:

Thanks, Obama!
Barack Obama reminds us why Donald Trump is president
By David Harsanyi
SEPTEMBER 10, 2018
“How hard can that be? Saying that Nazis are bad,” former President Barack Obama asked a crowd in Illinois over the weekend. Well, probably no harder than saying the words “radical Islam,” I imagine. Or maybe it’s slightly less difficult than not sending billions of dollars to Holocaust-denying terror regimes that have both the means and intent to murder Jews—in 2018, not 1942. And it’s definitely a lot easier than not meeting, posing, then smiling for a picture with Louis Farrakhan. But thanks for the lecture.
Obama may well find the presence of a few hundred pathetic white supremacists more perilous than a deadly worldwide ideological movement with millions of adherents. But just as Obama’s sins do not excuse President Trump’s inexplicable answer to the Charlottesville riot, Trump’s words don’t excuse the most divisive modern president, a man whose unilateralism and contempt for the process and the Constitution helped create the environment America now find itself in.
While Obama’s self-reverential speech was crammed with revisionism, the most jaw-dropping contention from the former president was probably a defense of his record on free speech: “I complained plenty about Fox News,” the scandal-ridden Obama explained, “but you never heard me threaten to shut them down, or call them ‘enemies of the people.’”
That’s the thing. We often hear Trump’s hyperbolic, and sometimes destructive, attacks on the press. Thankfully, as of yet the president hasn’t applied the power of the state to inhibit anyone’s free expression. And this is no thanks to liberals’ eight-year efforts to empower the executive branch when that was useful to them.
It’s worth remembering that it was Obama who called out the Supreme Court during a State of the Union speech for defending the First Amendment in the Citizens United case, and his allies who still argue that state should be able to ban political documentaries — and, yes, books. Let’s also not forget Obama’s Internal Revenue Service admitted then apologized for cracking down on conservative political groups. It was the Obama administration that blamed the Benghazi attack on free speech, apologizing to tyrannies for the excesses of free expression, and then, for good measure, threw the amateurish videomaker behind “The Innocence of Muslims” into jail.
Most of all, let’s not forget that Obama did a lot more than complain about Fox News. The administration was so preoccupied with the cable news network (the only major station that could reasonably be seen as the opposition) that top-ranking administration officials like Anita Dunn, Rahm Emanuel, and David Axelrod all engaged in a concerted effort to openly delegitimize its coverage.
That was unprecedented, but okay. Less okay, though, was that not long after that effort, Attorney General Eric Holder decided to spy on a Fox journalist—shopping his case to three separate judges, until he found one who let him name reporter James Rosen as a co-conspirator in a crime of reporting the news. 8/13

Re: The Great Weigantia Flame War
Most of you probably don't know that I have this little thing I do, which is to get up and go down to the local Waffle House for coffee every day at five.
There's a regular crowd that comes in at that hour, including a factory mechanic, an elderly bible-toting couple, a mixed-race pair of young studs that lecture us all on the joys of weed and pussy, another mechanic with a local body shop - our most ardent Trump defender - and a rotating cast of thousands who get caught up in the freewheeling conversation that ensues.
The waitress staff, who serve also as moderators of a sort, range from the world-weary old-timer with the best sarcastic put-downs, to the wide-eyed country girl with bad teeth who's come to the city to take the only job she's qualified to do, to support her baby.
A mixed group to be sure, but not terribly unlike all of those that wander into our little corner of the web here.
Cross words do occasionally fly, as they will in such forums. Our older waitress Rhonda has a standing rule that anyone who gets personal has to pay their bill in full first, so that nobody gets to stomp out on it.
Every once in a while, a new face will appear and insist, "no politics! no religion!", and we'll spend awhile in sullen silence until that person leaves. It's recognized as a fair request - most bars observe a similar ban for the obvious reason that drunks have a propensity for escalating arguments that others don't.
These sorts of impromptu discussion groups pop up all the time in America, sorta like impromptu un-organized baseball games used to pop up in empty lots when my dad was a kid (before anal-retentive parents took over children's recreation).
It's certainly not an exclusively American phenomena. There are similar scenes being played out worldwide, from the mosques of Iran to the tea houses in Japan, to the lunch breaks at the diamond mines in South Africa.
But mine is the only country in the world where, when things get hot, someone invariably insists "it's my constitutional right to say what I think!", and everyone else has to agree. God Bless America, and don't forget to tip your waitress, or she'll bring holy hell on you.
My point is, things are going to get hotter in US politics before this is all over. Trump has energized both sides with his rhetoric, and brought some extreme folks out of the woodwork that used to shy away from speaking their minds, at least when they were sober.
But I'm all in favor of playing by "American" Waffle House rules: let the conversation flow freely, like kiddie pee at a water park, but compensate CW for the giant pain in the ass you're being. Figure about a buck per insult, eh? Surely there's a manic here somewhere that can add that all up for us.
If that doesn't stop it, at least we'll know then that it ultimately benefits the group, right? CW will ultimately decide who gets culled, and who gets cold coffee...
Wow, that looked a lot shorter before I posted it too.

Ahhhh, agreement, at last.
Now, anyone want to talk about the primaries?
I think Cynthia Nixon's problem is that she comes across as yet another celebrity dilettante come down from the mountain to tell us how it is.
I think we've had quite enough of that.
President Trump is responsible, in part, for Hurricane Florence!
No, but the story is a nice distraction from the fact that Trump completely botched the response in Puerto Rico.
"It's an island, you know.."
I think Cynthia Nixon's problem is that she comes across as yet another celebrity dilettante come down from the mountain to tell us how it is.

I would agree with that.. She seems to have an entitlement issue..
On the other hand her "America Was Never That Great" opponent should be disqualified outright.. :D
No, but the story is a nice distraction from the fact that Trump completely botched the response in Puerto Rico.
So, we are in agreement that the WaPoop claim is, arguably, hysterical anti-Trump bullshit.. Plays great to the hysterical NeverTrumpers, but little to do with FACTS or REALITY...
As to the "botched" response??
PR was "botched" long before Irma made it obvious to the world..
While it's fair to say President Trump wasn't at his best, it's UNFAIR to put ALL the blame on the response and don't assign ANY blame to the lack of preparedness on the part of the PR Government..
In other words, PR had a LOT of infrastructure issues and THAT contributed a LOT to the aftermath of Irma...
Speaking of hurricanes, Isaac is moving it's way thru the St Kitts/Nevis area this week.. He better not mess up our family cruise this year!!! :^/

Hear that???
President Trump is responsible, in part, for Hurricane Florence!!!
The editorial doesn't say that President Trump is responsible for Hurricane Florence, Michale. That's your classic straw man argument.
It says:
Fox News misrepresenting an editorial or just outright making shit up isn't exactly big news either. :)
Thought I would pick up with Michale where I left off a couple of weeks ago, since I have a couple of hours, so I couldn't be accused of "running and hiding"....
But really???
Fuck this shit...
Thought I would pick up with Michale where I left off a couple of weeks ago,
You will simply HAVE to be more specific...
"Well, gee whiz... Kinda a lot has happened since then.."
But really???
Fuck this shit...
Oh well... We'll always have a couple weeks ago.. :D
And crack whore continues with her personal attacks.. Try to ignore it but she just keeps going and going and going..
See how many of my comments are politics related...
See how many of crack whore's comments are all about me...
Yea.. No problem seeing where the issue is..
If she would just disappear, things would be awesome here...

And crack whore continues with her personal attacks..
Your contempt for your wife is again duly noted, but how is it a "personal attack" to point out a straw man argument that doesn't exist in the editorial?
See how many of my comments are politics related...
See how many of your comments contain requests for someone to commit suicide because you can't handle having your own chosen verbiage hurled back in your general direction.
See how many of crack whore's comments are all about me...
The majority of your comments are ad hominem attacks either against the group as a whole or me.
So how is pointing out that someone is using a straw man argument a "personal attack"? That language doesn't exist anywhere in the editorial of the Washington Post. So it's a straw man argument put in place in order to knock down the actual editorial. How is that a personal attack?
If she would just disappear, things would be awesome here...
Not going to happen. :)
Your contempt for your wife is again duly noted,
And again, the crack whore attacks my wife..
Victoria, do everyone a favor and just eat a bullet. Oh that's right.. Yer scared of guns..

No, you are tossing them at my wife.. A person who has never done a single thing to you...
Yer like a terrorist who thinks that the way to attack a person you hate is thru their family.. Innocent people who have not done you a lick of harm..
You are a completely sad and pathetic excuse for a human being and this world would be a much better place without you in it.. So, do everyone a favor and just kill yourself..
PR was "botched" long before Irma made it obvious to the world..
Blaming the victims rarely helps your cause, and usually has an inescapable racist component. It sure didn't help Bush dodge criticism for his handling of Katrina.
Blaming the victims rarely helps your cause, and usually has an inescapable racist component.
You may characterize it however you wish to support your argument.
But the simple fact is, PR's infrastructure was shit long before Irma was on the horizon and it's undeniable that it played a part in the recovery failure..
Facts don't bow to political agendas, Balthy...

Oh wait.. You meant OTHERS.. OK I get ya now.. :D
Facts don't bow to political agendas
That doesn't keep the Right from trying, constantly, to get a curtsy out of them.
Trump will get his payback in the form of the hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans that migrated to Florida after Irma. That's a huge voting bloc in a State that was previously evenly divided, and they're signing up to vote in record numbers, last I heard. oops.
That doesn't keep the Right from trying, constantly, to get a curtsy out of them.
And the same can be said for the Left.. :D
It's funny how that works.. :D

A Democratic wave from younger voters and Puerto Ricans? Don’t bank on it
https://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/buzz/2018/03/23/a-democratic-wave-from-younger-voters-and-puerto-ricans-dont-bank-on-it/
Even CW has commented that the "PR WAVE" never materialized..
Florida will be an interesting governor's race to watch. It is an incredibly expensive state to run for office in, due to the multiple large media markets within the state. Democrats were hopeful, after Hurricane Maria, that a large influx of Puerto Ricans into the state (who had fled the island's destruction) would equate to a big boost in registered Democrats. Since Puerto Ricans are already American citizens, there would be no delay in this boost appearing. But so far, the data does not show all that big a boost in the voter registration rolls, so this may turn out to be illusory.

Hey! I'm like a reflection in your mirror. Your referring to the posters on this board as "ya'all" and attacking them in a group with your regular trolling onslaught of names like Party bigots and slaves resembles your whining and moaning about attacks on your group.

Only to those who are inclined to scream "RACIST!!! RACIST!!!" without waiting for ANY facts....
But I know that's not you... :D
Crack Whore Welfare Girl,
You are tossing them and tossing them and tossing them. I'm just pointing out your projection
Really??
Because before you said, "I'm just the poster tossing your attacks right back at you."
Before you said you were tossing the attacks..
NOW you claim you are just pointing them out..
Are you a lying cunt now?? Or were you a lying cunt then??
Likely both..

Everyone would appreciate if you would quit noting the requests and ACT on the requests.,..

As do Trump, Mnuchin, Ross, Mercer, Adelman, Koch and the other billionaires that want to run the country like it's their private sandbox.
[98]Jimmy Carter cautions Democrats not to scare off moderates
Someone ought to tell the same to Trump, who's been shedding independents like a room sheds cockroaches after the light's turned on. He's down to 36% approval and dropping like a stone with that crowd.
Can Trump still win if his support dwindles down to himself, Jarvanka, the billionaires, and the Klan?

Facts to support???
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 45% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-three percent (53%) disapprove.

See, I can cherry pick data too.. :D
Can Trump still win if his support dwindles down to himself, Jarvanka, the billionaires, and the Klan?
If that ever happens, of course not..
On the other hand, can President Trump LOSE with 32% Black American support and 100% Trump supporter support??
Of course not.. :D
No response to #113, Balthy??? :D

Crack Whore Welfare Girl,
Your projection regarding your family is again duly noted.
Really??
Yep.
Because before you said, "I'm just the poster tossing your attacks right back at you."
Before you said you were tossing the attacks..
NOW you claim you are just pointing them out..
You need an English lesson? I am pointing out your projection by tossing it back in your general direction. It's not at all complicated if you have an IQ above 90 and can conceive of the concept that people can do more than one thing at a time... it's called multitasking, though not the hallmark of a person who admittedly generally only operates using "simple logic," such as yourself.
Are you a lying cunt now?? Or were you a lying cunt then??
I will assume this is a question for one of your family members. Either your wife or your daughter.
Likely both..
If you say so. :)
Everyone would appreciate if you would quit noting the requests and ACT on the requests.,..
Not going to happen, but another suicide request is again duly noted. :)
No response to #113, Balthy?
Getting to it (see below), doing some serious house cleaning in between posts...
CW: But so far, the data does not show all that big a boost in the voter registration rolls, so this may turn out to be illusory.
So far. Relatively speaking, they just got there. Many will have to establish new households, find work, get state ID's, etc. etc. It's not just a matter of 'showing up', in other words.
I will assume this is a question for one of your family members. Either your wife or your daughter.
And NOW the crack whore starts attacks on my daughter...
What a complete and putrid waste of skin..
Look, I know you feel like shit because you can't have kids, crack whore that you are.. It's normal for the courts to sterilize women who have proven they lack the mental capacity due to drug use to raise children..
Or it's because this is what you look like:

Do the world a favor.. End your own life before you attack more innocent people..
Getting to it (see below), doing some serious house cleaning in between posts...
Fair enough.. I have a 50" vizio I have broken down to the bare LEDs and it is NOT cooperating.. So I feel for ya..
So far. Relatively speaking, they just got there.
Uh no.. They got there almost a year ago.. PLENTY of time to register to vote if they were so inclined..
It's not just a matter of 'showing up', in other words.
And yet, according to CW, it IS just a matter of showing up..
If you don't believe that, why didn't you point this out when CW had it in his commentary??
Silence Gives Assent, yunno.. :D
COm'on.. I know you want to put a good spin on things..
But if the Puerto Ricans were there and ready to vote en masse, then the Senate Race polls would reflect that..
They ain't there and no amount of spin will change that fact..
But, I'll be happy to table this discussion until we see the results of the FL Races in Nov.. :D
45% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-three percent (53%) disapprove.
That's Rasmussen the GOP polling outfit you've cited, and it still doesn't look good for your boy.
For the record, my source was a Sept. 10 CNN Poll.
Rasmussen doesn't break down it's daily tracking poll by party affiliation, but it does break Trump's score down by enthusiasm, where the 'strongly approve' group is a mere 32% of the electorate.
That's Rasmussen the GOP polling outfit you've cited, and it still doesn't look good for your boy.
Looks as good or better than yer messiah, Odumbo. :D
For the record, my source was a Sept. 10 CNN Poll.
CNN!!???
BBWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Next you'll have a WaPoop or HuffPoop poll and call that FACT :D
Rasmussen doesn't break down it's daily tracking poll by party affiliation, but it does break Trump's score down by enthusiasm, where the 'strongly approve' group is a mere 32% of the electorate.
Yea, you can spin it all you want..
But what it all boils down to is Rasmussen doesn't say what you want to hear, so it's wrong..
Regardless.. Polls are shit..
They tell nothing but the bias of the poll takers..
I am saying let's wait until the FACTS are in (7 Nov 2018) and THEN we can discuss it, eh?? :D
Scott will be the newest FL Senator and DeSantis will be the new FL Governor...
:D
But, I'll be happy to table this discussion until we see the results of the FL Races in Nov..
Fair enough. I'm sure there will be plenty to analyze then.
Fair enough. I'm sure there will be plenty to analyze then.
Once again, we are COMPLETELY in agreement..
Wanna jaw jaw about Florence??
Hope yer not in the Carolinas....
Well, I'm off to the Waffle (after running some chores). Everybody be nice to one another.
Hope yer not in the Carolinas...
Nope, but we'll get the backwash here in KY when it's through with you. :}
Heh.. Have fun at The Waffle.. Say hello the counterparts for me.. :D

And NOW the crack whore starts attacks on my daughter...
You're the attacker who resembles your remark. You are free to stop insulting your family and yourself whenever you wish.
What a complete and putrid waste of skin..
Say, you are very repetitive, but we've already discussed your girth and how you could push yourself away from the table and shed some of the excess adipose tissue and donate your putrid waste of skin to science.
Look, I know you feel like shit because you can't have kids, crack whore that you are..
You know nothing about my family and never will. I'm great.
I'd say you're better off that way too... infinitely better off.
I'd say you have an active imagination and are a serial fabricator and quite the projectionist.
It's normal for the courts to sterilize women who have proven they lack the mental capacity due to drug use to raise children..
Is that right? I will take your word for it, and thanks for letting us know exactly how your family predicament came into being. That would explain your other family issues that you keep prattling on and on about. Good to know.
I quit clicking your links years ago, although I'm sure there's someone out there who gives a damn, I'm not interesting in looking at your family's photos. :)
But that doesn't mean you have to attack other people's children...
The attacks are all yours, sunshine... every "vile and disgusting" word of them.
I can tell, yer one step away from being another James Huberty or an Adam Lanza or a James Hodgkison..
Said the guy who keeps suggesting violence to another poster, and your ever present projection is again duly noted.
Do the world a favor.. End your own life before you attack more innocent people..
The attacks are your handiwork, and another suicide request from Michale is again and as always... duly noted.
It's really fun to have NICE discussions here...
Like the way it used to be...
Before all the violent haters joined up...
