Program Note

[ Posted Thursday, July 25th, 2019 – 18:51 UTC ]

Due to a sudden and unexpected wedding, there will be no column today, sorry. One of my oldest and best friends decided to tie the knot unexpectedly, so my presence was required elsewhere. Congratulations to the happy couple! My apologies for the interruption in service, and fresh columns will resume tomorrow.

Many felt blindsided that no one warned them how much Mueller had aged - and regretful that they had forced a decorated Vietnam veteran and longtime civil servant into testifying when he was so reluctant in the first place.

"I was beyond shocked," one lawmaker said of Mueller's occasional confusion and seeming unfamiliarity with details of the report.

Even pro-impeachment Democrats agreed that the testimony may not have helped their case, with Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, saying, "I don't think it was a Eureka moment," and Rep. Daniel Kildee, D-Mich., adding: "I haven't seen anything . . . that indicates this is a turning point."

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony Wednesday before two House committees confirmed what we already knew: his two-year investigation of Russia’s meddling in our 2016 presidential election was fatally tainted by deep political bias and was in fact designed to harass and derail President Trump.

Mueller’s testimony exposed troubling deficiencies of his investigation. It is now clearer than ever that his probe was conducted by a small group of partisan prosecutors who – as hard as they tried – were unable to establish either obstruction, conspiracy, or collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

It’s also clear that the special counsel conducted his lengthy and costly investigation unimpeded by President Trump.

Wednesday morning’s hearing before the House Judiciary Committee was at times difficult to watch. Mueller had no idea what was in his own report. It’s no wonder that he demanded to have his deputy at his side, just so someone could point out the pages in the report, since he was obviously unfamiliar with its content.

President Trump summed it up best when he told reporters that Mueller “did a horrible job both today and with respect to the investigation,” but “in all fairness to him he had nothing to work with.”

Mueller’s testimony was rife with inaccuracies. When questioned by Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., Mueller said collusion and conspiracy are not synonymous. And yet, Page 180 of his own report says that “collusion is largely synonymous with conspiracy.”

When asked if he was contradicting his report, Mueller’s answer was: “Not when I read it.” It’s cringe-worthy.

It is painfully clear that not only did Mueller not write the report, it's clear he didn't even READ the report...

Such a sad end to an auspicious career...

The next question for Mueller should have been: Why was this report even written in the first place, especially if you’d already concluded that no charges could be brought against the president?

Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas, asked a pointed question that noted President Trump has not been treated fairly throughout this investigation.

“Can you give me an example, other than Donald Trump, where the Justice Department determined that an investigated person was not exonerated because their innocence was not conclusively determined?” Ratcliffe asked.

Mueller responded: “I cannot, but this is a unique situation.”

No sir, this is not a unique situation. That is not the standard of law. You are not the judge or jury. You either bring charges or you don’t. Mueller’s testimony Wednesday made it clear this whole ordeal has been a political witch hunt.

Here’s the bottom line: there was no collusion, no conspiracy, no obstruction between the Trump campaign and Russia. Case closed.

This is the part that PROVED Mueller was not all there..

This is NOT a unique situation.. It's very common for a prosecutor to investigate a crime and then make a determination to prosecute..

It's simply unheard of for a Prosecutor to investigate a crime and issue a report that says, in essence, "I know the person is guilty but I can't find any facts to support my position."

THAT is completely what Mueller is saying...

And that is total and complete bullshit.. Completely un-American..

That utter travesty strips Mueller of any praise he deserves for his past actions...

Over the course of his two-year investigation, I would go on TV and say I didn’t think the Russia investigation was necessarily going the way liberals hoped it would. And both on and off the air, I would be told that we just had no idea what Mueller knew, that Mueller was the only person who could see the investigation entire and that he was slowly but surely zeroing in on the Trump-Russia conspiracy.

He says something that they find offensive, they scream and whine and distort the meaning of what was said, they use their magic attack words like ‘racist’, ‘white nationalist’ and ‘xenophobia’. They demand an apology, the backtrack.

But Trump doesn’t give them that. He denies the thrill of the fanatic, which is to see the chastised submit. Instead, he repeats himself. He points out that some countries are indeed ‘shitholes’. He points out that anyone who hates the country they reside in has the option of leaving. He ‘doubles down’, which is essentially media code for ‘he horrifies us by not submitting to us’. In this way he becomes a symbol of good for everyone who does not believe that he is a symbol of evil.

Trump’s greatest crime, and his greatest triumph, is to become a living example that you do not have to submit. You do not have to apologize. You do not have to back down, or grovel, or confess. You are free unless you accept your chains. What message is more hopeful or American than that?

A race-based strategy will fail hard because what progressives call "privilege" is mostly about status-wealth, which most of us don't have.

Democratic very-hopeful Kirsten Gillibrand failed to sell this penitent version of white privilege right at the ground zero for economic inequality—Youngstown, Ohio. Youngstown was archetypal postwar America, a Midwest city built around a now-dead steel industry. It was racially mixed, not only statistically (49 percent white, 44 percent black), but in reality. The now-gone union jobs paid living wages to whites and blacks and allowed people to buy homes on each others’ streets. Workers’ privilege. The receding tide grounded all boats.

Gillibrand was asked at a campaign stop there: “This is an area that, across all demographics, has been depressed because of the loss of industry and the opioid crisis. What do you have to say to people in this area about so-called white privilege?”

Her answer, praised by CNN as “powerful,” was a wandering narrative about how, while white privilege didn’t spare the questioner unemployment, the loss of her house, her son to opioids, and her soul itself at the hands of rapacious inequality, the black folk in Youngstown had it worse—’cause the supremacist cops would bust a black kid for weed while a white kid would walk away. It was the perfect answer for a progressive media hit. It was the worst possible answer if a candidate actually wanted to win some of those Ohio votes. Gillibrand stumbled on to say she that she understood families in the community were suffering, “but that’s not what this conversation is about.”

When the weight of the media, entertainment and educational industries is so hostile to non-liberals, and when it combines with the power of the state, it’s tough. It seems overwhelming at times. It’s emotionally and physically draining. And it’s been going on for several decades. Yet I still have hope despite that overwhelming disadvantage.

It’s almost unimaginable that after this decades-long onslaught, Republicans nonetheless control the Senate and the presidency, and most state legislatures. How can that possibly be, it’s seemingly impossible. The American people are resilient, and that gives me hope.

But vigilance must be eternal, going to sleep politically even for a year or two is not an option. You cannot give an inch, or they’ll take a mile. And people need to be held accountable.

We’re doing construction at the house. The contractors we’re using told me they’ve never seen the economy this strong, that they can’t hire enough people for all the work they could get. Some of the workers blasted Rush Limbaugh on the radio. I smiled.

We can’t let the Mueller fiasco be forgotten. This was really dangerous, almost beyond imagination.

The investigators need to be investigated.

This is Americans, people.. What you Democrats fool yourselves into believing is not America.. It's a dream.. A delusion...

WASHINGTON—Admitting she had worries about the rise of left-leaning activist groups within her party, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed concerns Thursday that outspoken progressives could do permanent damage to Democrats’ reputation as ineffectual cowards. “They mean well, but if they continue to aggressively push their agenda like this, they run the risk of fundamentally altering the public’s perception of Democrats as bumbling, feckless chumps,” said Pelosi, adding that this brash brand of politics could be easily manipulated by Republicans to paint the party as something other than a bunch of sniveling wimps who are too weak-willed and complacent to stand up for anything with even remote political risk. “I understand where these groups are coming from, but while it might feel good to vent their frustrations about the state of the country, they could undermine what I believe should be our core 2020 argument: We are dithering, incompetent doormats who are infinitesimally less objectionable than our opposition.” Pelosi also noted that her concerns shouldn’t be overstated, as she knew it would take more than a few activists for voters to associate the Democratic party with the vaguest inkling of courage.

In one way it’s the nonsense we’ve all grown used to, but it should be said that there’s an aspect of self-infatuation, of arrogance, in telling people they must reorder the common language to suit your ideological preferences. There is something mad in thinking you should control the names of things. Or perhaps I mean surprising/wild.

I see in it a spirit similar to that of the Terror. There is a tone of, “I am your moral teacher. Because you are incapable of sensitivity, I will help you, dumb farmer. I will start with the language you speak.”

An odd thing is they always insist they’re doing this in the name of kindness and large-spiritedness. And yet, have you ever met them? They’re not individually kind or large-spirited. They’re more like messianic schoolmasters.

His/Her—Zir, Hir, Eir, Vis, Tem, Eir

It’s wrong, when you meet a new co-worker, to ask his pronouns. (We don’t say “preferred” pronouns—that “implies someone’s gender is a preference”!) You don’t want him wondering if you think he’s transgender or nonbinary. Instead, introduce yourself in a way that summons his pronouns: “Hi, I’m Jim and my pronoun is he/him.” Use “they” a lot. It’s gender neutral. Suggested sentence: “I spoke to the marketing director and they said they’d get back to me.”

This is grammatically incorrect but so what? Correct grammar, and the intelligibility it allows, is a small price to pay for inclusion and equality.

We are being asked to memorize all this, to change hundreds of years of grammar and usage, to accommodate the needs or demands of a group that perceives itself as beleaguered.

They've requested Grand Jury records dealing with Mueller's report, specifically stating they need those records to determine whether to impeach. Nancy Pelosi gave her blessing to the language and the move.

Of special note, towards the end of the presser Jerry Nadler said they're looking at crimes beyond what Mueller looked at - which was good news. Mueller's investigation was important, but not the totality of Blotus' bad behavior.

Despite assertions to the contrary by the president and his allies, the special counsel’s report and testimony are not the end of our investigations. We have now filed a petition in court to obtain the grand-jury documents referenced in the special counsel’s report. In that filing, we have made clear that we will utilize our Article I powers to obtain the additional underlying evidence, as well as enforce subpoenas for key witness testimony, and broaden our investigations to include conflicts of interest and financial misconduct.

While many people believe that beginning an impeachment investigation can begin only with a vote of the full House of Representatives, this is not true. Article I authorizes the House Judiciary Committee to begin this process.

As members of the House Judiciary Committee, we understand the gravity of this moment that we find ourselves in. We wake up every morning with the understanding of the oath that binds us as members of Congress, and the trust that our constituents placed in us to uphold that oath. We will move forward with the impeachment process. Our investigation will seriously examine all the evidence as we consider whether to bring articles of impeachment or other remedies under our Article I powers.

Our Constitution requires it. Our democracy depends on it.
