Closing Time Schedule
I'm not even going to try to write an article today, because nobody would likely even read it. We're all just waiting for the results to start appearing anyway, so I thought I'd file this as a placeholder column so we can all start fresh down in the comments section tonight.
I got the following list of poll closure times from the Washington Post, which has a much more detailed list, but I just wanted to post the main information as a summary. Caveats: Other sources I checked differed on whether a few states would report some results an hour earlier (such as Oregon), and already there are a handful of counties here and there which have been granted extended polling hours. But other than that, this list should do. And, just to show everyone how much more pleasant it is to watch the results out here, all times are given in Pacific Standard Time (which is when I'll be seeing them).
Without further ado, here is the basic list of the schedule of state poll closing times. "Partial Results" means there are some counties which close early, and some which close late. Most often (but not in all cases), this is due to a time zone line splitting the state. "Completed Results" is the follow-up to Partial Results. And "Full Results" means that polls across the entire state close at the same time.

I think many Americans don't like it when they hear that 'we are better than this' and, frankly, I can see their point.

Especially when the people saying that "we are better than [you]" are the so-called insiders and elites.
And, the likes of Tom Friedman going around saying the sky is falling doesn't help the Democratic cause.
Here's why not to panic. The media talking heads are mostly completely falling down on the job of explaining which votes have been counted and which have not. The difference between mail-in and same-day votes may be huge in some states. Some states counted mail-in first, others count them last. Several counties in PA won't even start counting them until tomorrow. But the journalists aren't really stressing this at all -- which is a shame, because it is different for every state. Check the commentary on FiveThirtyEight, as one source that is discussing this in depth. Some of these states may be lost causes (FL, for instance). But many of the others are not, for various reasons.
And all Biden needs is to hold WI and MI and pick up ONE of the following: PA, OH, NC, GA, Fl, TX, AZ.
So as the Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy would say:

And Trump is underperforming in the North and Northeast compared to 2016... where he won three states by less than 78,000 votes combined.
CNN is actaully doing a very good job of reporting the results that are coming and what percentage of those votes are early votes and what the early vote percentage is expected to be.
I actually expected more of a "red mirage" in the North where many of the same-day votes have been reported and absentee/mail-in ballots haven't, and I'm just not seeing it... so far. :)
OK, another top of the hour coming up, and it's going to be a good one for Biden, with an easy 74 EV.

I think Democrats need to get a lot better at pushing what their agenda actually is in an effort to counter the nonsense that their agenda is anti-America. But, they must do so in a way that doesn't give short shrift to the 60+ million voters who don't vote for Democrats and understand what these voters keep saying in presidential and down ballot elections.
The fly in the ointment is that the fine art of persuasion may be dead in America. I hope that is not the case! Biden used to know how to persuade but I'd have to give him only a barely passing grade for his efforts this time around. But, with a little luck and on a wing and a prayer, he might just win this election. If he doesn't, then all hope is lost for moving the country forward, together.
And, the ability to do this is what forms the gulf between the leadership capacities of Trump and Biden.

Based on CNN's reporting, as of this writing, Biden holds an 8k vote lead in Nevada, a 21k vote lead in Wisconsin, and a 12k vote lead in Michigan. If he can hold on to those 3 leads, he should win. From what I can tell, a lot of the remaining votes look to be from urban centers that have been voting for Biden so far, so there's hope. Still, this election is probably going to go down as one of the closest of all time, quite possibly being decided by only a few thousand votes out of over 135 million cast.

I couldn't disagree more vehemently with you or with this WP piece. I know, I know ... shocking, positively shocking. Mostly because the stated premise betrays a vast lack of knowledge and understanding about what a president Biden may be capable of doing and how he would handle the senate majority leader.
Democratic voters in the primaries didn't just settle for Biden. Collectively, they made an inspired choice, even if many of them don't realize it, even now. :)

Not sure how seriously I'd take it, but CNN is still pushing that Biedn has a chance in Pennsylvania as he's closing the gap pretty quickly with the mail-in ballots being counted now. According to them, 1.1M ballots remain, and Biden would catch up were he to win around 70% of them, a number that's apparently pretty consistent with the performance he's been having with mail-in ballots in the state.
Now, I'll believe it when I see it, but it's interesting to contemplate.
Also, what's going on with Arizona and Nevada? Those numbers haven't been updated since this morning.
I wouldn't say that CNN is pushing that Biden has a chance in Pennsylvania. The magic wall guy and others are simply saying that you need to count the votes and that the math coupled with where the voters are indicates that Biden has a chance in Pennsylvania. And, he does!

As we hear more and more from elections directors across the country and get a real education on how precisely votes get received and counted and adjudicated and reported, the claims that Trump keeps making about vote fraud, rigged elections and ballot stuffing go over like the proverbial lead balloon. Ahem.
I'd like to send out a big THANK-YOU to all the election workers who are doing a wonderful job to ensure that all of the valid votes are counted. I'd be darn proud of all of them if I were an American. Heck, I'm proud of them, anyways! :)
Georgia is getting close. 48k vote difference, estimated 250k votes left to count. If Biden wins 60% of the remaining, he could still win the state. And as with other places, most of the remaining ballots are mail-ins from urban and sub-urban counties, so it's still possible.

No, 600k ballots were NOT "found" after the call; they weren't hiding in a corner or suddenly discovered in the broom closet. Fox knew the count of ballots in Arizona was only at 73% when they made that call last night.

The thing about "second place" is that it actually did used to be a "thing" in America where the guy who came in second place became the Vice President. Thomas Jefferson wasn't thrilled about having Aaron Burr as his Vice President and set reforms in motion during his presidency to remedy that whole "second place" scenario. :)
