Will A Trucker Protest Happen Here?

[ Posted Monday, February 14th, 2022 – 16:50 UTC ]

The Canadian trucker protest seems to be winding down, at least somewhat. The vital bridge between Detroit and Windsor has been cleared and reopened. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a national public emergency, which will allow him to clear the protests in Ottawa as well. But the big remaining question further south is whether American truckers will stage their own protest or not. The right-wing media echo chamber is rooting for such a protest to take place, but so far nothing tangible has emerged from the effort. Perhaps this is because there just isn't any great reason for them to protest here in the first place?

In Canada, the truckers were ostensibly protesting mask and vaccine mandates. However, with each week that goes by there are fewer and fewer pandemic measures even in effect down here in the United States. There is no nationwide vaccine mandate for truckers at all. Mask and distancing mandates are being lifted daily, even in blue states, as everyone rushes to get back to normal again. Give it a few more weeks and there just won't be anything left to protest at all, at least on the pandemic front.

Of course, a reason could be easily manufactured. If the right-wing media excels at anything, stoking fake rage over some non-issue has got to be up there at the top. Perhaps "free-floating hatred of Joe Biden" would be enough? It certainly wouldn't surprise me.

A few proposals for an American trucker protest have been floating around, but so far nothing has come of them. A cross-country convoy was proposed, at first to leave from Sacramento, then possibly Las Vegas, and just yesterday there were fears that such a protest would begin at the site of the Super Bowl. But nothing materialized in the end.

Some are suggesting that such a cross-country rolling protest be timed so that it arrives in Washington D.C. just in time for President Biden's State Of The Union address, scheduled for the first of March. There is still time to get something like this together, but so far no plans have been publicly announced by anyone.

As the Canadians proved, trucks can be very effective protest tools. As a columnist for the Washington Post pointed out today:

Your average 18-wheel tractor-trailer is over 13 feet high and around 50 feet long, which makes it an extraordinarily useful tool for political protest. If, that is, your preferred means of protest involves blocking traffic, getting in people's way, or interrupting the flow of commerce. The truck is a fantastic force multiplier; with just a few of them, you can create a lot of chaos no matter how small your numbers.

If a cross-country convoy is launched here, it could disrupt cities one after the other, heading east. If they staged traffic snarls in cities and then moved on after a few hours or a day, they probably wouldn't get too much pushback from the local cops, either. They'd all know it was a temporary problem and would likely take a hands-off attitude, for the most part. This would generate publicity every time they managed to gridlock another city -- since each and every one of them would be heavily covered by the likes of Fox News. Television networks in general love to show footage of chaos, and the truckers could certainly provide that on almost a daily basis as they meandered eastward.

Using trucks as protest vehicles isn't a new thing, of course. Truckers have staged slowdowns in the D.C. metro area before, stretching back decades. Ever since they were lionized in popular culture in the 1970s (during the "C.B. radio era"), truckers have carved out a niche in the American mythos as a sort of modern incantation of the cowboy -- free-roaming, independent, and vital to the American economy -- with a dash of the maverick woven in. The song that launched a lot of the trucker craze back then was "Convoy," by C.W. McCall, and it tells the story of a convoy of trucks plowing through lines of police set up to stop them in city after city. The final couplet is the most memorable: "So we crashed the gate doing 98 / I says: 'Let them truckers roll, 10-4'." The gate in question is a tollgate on a bridge -- as I said, trucks behaving lawlessly is not exactly a new thing. Truckers today would be trading on decades of this freewheeling image being built up.

Still, it's hard to see what they'd be protesting. Much to Donald Trump's disappointment, it almost certainly wouldn't center around his Big Lie about the 2020 election. Perhaps high gas prices might be a reasonable focal point? Whatever they pick, though, it'd really just boil down to free-floating anger that there is a Democrat in the White House. Which, these days, might be enough.

One thing that is not in question is the funding for such a protest. The money to buy gas and other logistical supplies would immediately appear if such a protest gets rolling in America. Half the funding for the Canadian protest seems to have come from Americans, who would doubtlessly be happy to fund one here at home too. Millions of dollars would be raised virtually overnight, which would be more than enough to fund a cross-country trip for a large number of trucks.

But what would they do when they reached Washington? Try to shut down the city? Surround the Capitol and/or the White House? To what end? What demands would such a protest even have? Again, there just are no mandates here for them to get upset about. Biden tried to institute one for all private companies with 100 or more employees, but that was struck down in the courts. There is no vaccine requirement to drive a truck here at all, except for the few who work the cross-border routes. And even that requirement may go away soon enough, as both Canada and the United States (and the rest of the world) transition away from the pandemic. If their main purpose was just to "make Biden look bad," well I suppose they could achieve that (at least on Fox News). But it's not exactly the best protest slogan to unify around.

So perhaps we will see a convoy of angry truckers crossing America in the next few weeks. And perhaps we won't -- copycat protests have sprung up in a few other countries in the world, but some have also fizzled and failed to materialize too. Either outcome seems equally possible here. Either way, by the time any protest does get organized, it is quite likely that life will have returned so close to normal that there really won't be anything left for them to protest at all.

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the fact that truckers are protesting against vaccine and mask mandates or with how they define freedom.

But, when they start impinging on the freedom of everyone else to live and work in peace, that is where their protest becomes illegal and, by the way, counterproductive.

It has taken far too long for law enforcement and political leaders in this country to put an end to this nonsense.

OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday activated rarely used emergency powers in an effort to end protests that have shut some U.S. border crossings and paralyzed parts of the capital.

Under the Emergencies Act, the government introduced measures intended to cut off protesters’ funding and took steps to reinforce provincial and local law enforcement with federal police.

“The blockades are harming our economy and endangering public safety,” Trudeau told a news conference. “We cannot and will not allow illegal and dangerous activities to continue.”

But the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said the government had not met the standard for invoking the Emergencies Act, which is intended to deal with threats to “sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” the group said.

When Donald Trump claimed that he and his campaign had been spied upon by Democrat operatives, the corporate media mocked him as either a delusional paranoid or an outright liar. But now, thanks to the latest court filing by Special Counsel John Durham, it appears that once again Trump has been proven right.

In the case of United States v. Michael Sussmann, Durham has filed a motion to inquire into defense counsel’s possible conflicts of interest in which he states that his office possesses evidence proving that, while attempting to establish a false narrative tying Trump to Russia, Sussmann and others serving Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign “exploited” Internet traffic pertaining to “Trump Tower,” “Donald Trump’s Central Park West apartment building,” and “the Executive Office of the President of the United States (‘EOP’).” (Emphasis added.)

The arrogance of Hillary and her co-conspirators is mind-boggling..

Did they not think that this would all come out!???

  14. [14]
    Michale wrote:

As stated in the indictment, Sussmann, a partner at the law firm which represented the Clinton campaign, worked in concert with others to concoct a false but “plausible” narrative that the “Trump Organization, owned by Donald J. Trump” was using a “secret channel of communications” to interact with “a particular Russian bank,” i.e., the Alfa Bank.

Sussmann is accused of making a false statement to FBI General Counsel James Baker in a September 19, 2016 meeting at FBI headquarters in Washington. At that meeting, Sussmann is alleged to have presented a so-called “white paper,” “documents,” and “data,” which purported to show secret internet communications between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank as well as a “white paper” by Fusion GPS (an investigative firm working for the Clinton campaign) alleging Alfa Bank’s ties to the Kremlin. In doing so, Sussmann is alleged to have lied to Baker when he said that he was not providing the material on behalf of a client when, according to the recently filed motion, he “had assembled and conveyed the allegations to the FBI on behalf of at least two specific clients, including (i) a technology executive (‘Tech Executive -1’) at a U.S.-based Internet company (‘Internet Company-1’), and (ii) the Clinton campaign.”

Keep in mind.. These ^^^ are not PROCESS CRIMES like the BS "crimes" that President Trump officials were charge with..

These are real and actual crimes... Crimes that are the focus of the investigation...

Democrats are going to jail... Pure and simple..

    Michale wrote:

As the indictment makes clear, the purpose of the meeting was to induce the FBI to launch an investigation of Trump’s possible ties to Russia. While the conspirators expressed doubts that their false narrative would survive serious scrutiny, they believed that it would be “plausible” enough to get the FBI to open an investigation of Trump. Once that happened, word of the investigation would be (and, in fact, was) disseminated to the news media in time to produce an electoral backlash against Trump.

But, even more damning, the indictment alleges that Sussmann met with employees of another U.S. government agency (“Agency-2”) “at a location outside the District of Columbia” after Trump had been inaugurated. This meeting took place on or about February 9, 2017, at which time “Sussmann provided to the Agency-2 Employees (i) several white papers, and (ii) multiple data files containing purported DNS [Internet] data, ranging from 2016 through early 2017.”

To the contrary, the motion damningly states that “the more complete data that Tech Executive-1 and his associates gathered — but did not provide to Agency-2 — reflected that between approximately 2014 and 2017, there were a total of more than 3 million lookups of Russian Phone-Provider-1 IP addresses that originated with U.S.-based IP addresses. Fewer than 1,000 of these lookups originated with IP addresses affiliated with Trump Tower.” (Emphasis added)

Yeah, President Trump was without a doubt the biggest intelligence threat and the most compromised American President to ever hold office… and that’s based solely on all of the things that Trump did in broad daylight! The financial measures bring crowdfunding platforms under terror-finance oversight, authorize Canadian banks to freeze accounts suspected of funding the blockades and suspend insurance on vehicles in the protests, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

“We are making these changes because we know that these (crowdfunding) platforms are being used to support illegal blockades and illegal activity which is damaging the Canadian economy,” Freeland said.

Canadian authorities have said about half of the funding for the protests has come from U.S. supporters. Toronto-Dominion Bank last week froze two personal bank accounts that received C$1.4 million ($1.1 million) for the protests.

A U.S.-based website, GiveSendGo, became a prime conduit for money to the protesters after mainstream crowdfunding platform GoFundMe blocked donations to the group. An Ontario court last week ordered GiveSendGo to freeze all funds supporting the blockade, but it said it would not comply.

Black voters are fleeing President Biden in droves. And it’s hard to see a scenario under which they come back anytime soon.

President Biden’s poll numbers have been stunningly bad lately. The most recent CNN poll has him at 58 percent disapproval, 41 percent approval. In December, Biden was at 49 percent approval in the same poll. And among those who disapprove of his performance, 56 percent say the president didn't accomplish anything in his first year of which they approve.

To be fair, President Trump’s poll numbers were similarly dismal at this stage of his presidency. But there are two major differences:

    1) Trump's polls could be largely explained by a special counsel’s investigation into possible Russia collusion and the 2016 election (which ultimately led nowhere).

    2) Trump's base, those who strongly supported him, was infinitely stronger and more reliable than Biden's current base, which at just 15 percent strongly approving ain't much of a base at all.

Meanwhile, a majority of Democrats don't even want Joe Biden to run again in 2024, with just 48 percent supporting the idea. This is unheard of after just one year.

Yes, and (as I'm sure you're aware) it's not primarily a Canadian trucker issue since the vast majority of them are in disagreement with the protest and are already 90% vaccinated; it's a protest organized by the fringe right waving their Nazi swastika and Confederate flags, dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, and calling for the dissolution of the Canadian government.

I think they're angry because they lost. The fringe-right conservatives have their knickers in a twist because the vast majority of Canadians (including conservatives) have widely supported the restrictive pandemic policies of both Trudeau at the federal level and leaders at the provincial levels. Well, boo effing hoo.

So naturally, the GQP insurrectionists and Nazi sympathizing fascists and confederate flag waving white supremacists in America who attempted to (by their own admission) "overturn the election" in the United States would be "all in" in their support for dismantling the Canadian government. Anything to cause chaos and force the hand of the government so that they can then whine and cry about "tyranny" is exactly what they want.

It has taken far too long for law enforcement and political leaders in this country to put an end to this nonsense.

I agree, but Trudeau outsmarted them by allowing them their time to "peacefully" protest and by refusing to give them what they wanted... the ability to whine about government overreach and to cry "tyranny."

That filing doesn't remotely say what Fox is claiming, but don't let facts get in the way of your hysterical rants and Trumpian "execution" fantasies. While you're researching that, you might want to familiarize yourselves with "statute of limitations" and come to grips with the fact that the five-year statute of limitations wherein a crime could be charged in connection with the CIA meeting regarding the DNS information collected in 2016 (hint: the Obama Administration) had already expired before Durham's recent filing that Fox News has twisted the meaning in order to string out the right-wing misinformation addicts and useful idiots.

You would think that as many times as Fox has led the rubes down the "any day now" trail that the clueless morons would finally "clue in" to the fact that they're being strung out on lies, but NOPE... ignorance must truly be bliss for these disinformation addicts, with Dotard Donald calling for the execution of people while the rubes eat it up like the Trump cult zombies they demonstrably are. The QAnon-level crazy has officially gone right-wing mainstream... the "Storm" is imminent... "any day now."

Is there a single right wingnut with the ability to connect dots? Fox News and the right-wing echo chamber have spent years telling their useful idiots with the terminal inability to think things through that there was absolutely zero evidence of any "collusion." Now they're telling the same gullible morons that there was actually shit-tons of it... except the (up until now nonexistent) evidence was all planted by Democrats and (of course) Hillary. Meanwhile, Dumbass Donald's calls for execution have the Trumpian cult zombies hysterically frothing at the mouth at the idea of killing anyone who is a perceived enemy of their Orange Worship. How sick is that? #HangMikePence

So, to recap: Educate yourselves right wingnuts... or continue to sound like uneducated echo chamber foaming-at-the-mouth useful idiotic morons without a clue.

Unprecedented Emergency Powers, Threatens Bank Accounts

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Monday announcement invoking the Emergencies Act to break a weeks-long protest in Ottawa has only served to inspire more resistance, one protest organizer told The Daily Wire.

The Freedom Convoy, a loose coalition of truckers protesting vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions, rolled into Ottawa in late January and has camped downtown since. The protesters have congested parts of the city around Canada’s seat of government on Parliament Hill while demanding a loosening of COVID-19 restrictions. So far, Trudeau has refused to meet with the truckers, instead employing increasingly hard-nosed political and legal tactics to try and break the protest.

It also empowers banks and financial institutions to freeze the accounts of any person or business suspected of being involved with an “illegal blockade.”

Paisley said that the protest would continue despite frozen bank accounts or impounded trucks until every protester is cuffed and thrown in prison.

I guess simple English is just too difficult? What part of "punishable by death" is "nothing of the sort"?

What kind of moron doesn't understand the objective for Trump's use of language here? How many times does this violence-inciting asshat have to use incendiary language directed at the cult zombies for it to "sink in" what he's doing? You can certainly continue to claim that Trump isn't inciting violence, but unlike you, the film footage and statements don't lie. All one needs to do is "roll tape" or possess a scintilla of simple reading comprehension ability:

The latest pleading from Special Counsel Robert Durham provides indisputable evidence that my campaign and presidency were spied on by operatives paid by the Hillary Clinton Campaign in an effort to develop a completely fabricated connection to Russia. This is a scandal far greater in scope and magnitude than Watergate, and those who were involved in and knew about this spying operation should be subject to criminal prosecution. In a stronger period of time in our country, this crime would have been punishable by death. In addition, reparations should be paid to those in our country who have been damaged by this.

    ~ Donald Trump, February 12, 2022

    *
First off, Trump is an idiot who refers to John Durham as "Robert," likely because of his inherent ignorance and the fact he's obviously still butthurt by the report of Robert Mueller that in no way whatsoever exonerates him... as anyone who has actually read the Mueller Report can attest. Does it surprise anyone that the Mueller Report being recently released with less redactions coincides with the right-wing propaganda frenzy the useful idiots are now foaming at the mouth about? Rhetorical question.

To those whose heads are affixed so firmly up Donald Trump's ass they either can't see or refuse to admit, there are obviously white supremacists, QAnon crazies, and insurrectionists that have been foaming at the mouth for a civil war on 4Chan and "too numerous to list" other forums and blogs all across the Internet wherein they profess ad nauseam their belief that their opponents would be unarmed and their victory therefore assured. Then there are the goalposts that are always moving for the QAnon nonsense and the imminent "Storm" coming "any day now" wherein Trump will expose the "evildoers" and have them tried and executed in the public square for pedophilia; there is no bottom to the cultish conspiracy nut crazy of these idiots who lined the streets awaiting the appearance of John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza to proclaim Trump was still president... as if were that to actually happen that it would somehow overrule the United States Constitution and somehow magically reinstall Trump. It's mindboggling ignorance.

How many heads are so far up Trump's (or their own) ass that they're completely unaware regarding the right-wingnuts who have already confessed to or been tried and found guilty of threatening the lives of elected officials? Multiple 1/6 insurrectionists are on record threatening the lives of elected officials. If your head is so far up Trump's (or your own) ass, how could one hear the chants of the insurrectionists to "hang Mike Pence"? Or acknowledge Trump pressuring Pence to "overturn the election" and Trump's tweets about Pence that prompted the chants? How many people's heads are planted so far up Trump's (or their own) ass that they're clueless regarding the plans that surrounded Biden's inauguration and the right-wingnuts published "rules of engagement," meaning when you shoot and when you don't.

In conclusion, knock "yerself" out attacking me personally; it is knee-slapping hysterical that the board troll uneducated wannabe cop and criminal penniless poon living in his trailer stench in Shithole hasn't yet figured out that his personal insults toward posters on this forum are just repetitive piles of monotonous and meaningless troll drivel and spew... full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

English too hard for you? You cannot insult me. How many comment boxes are you going to use whining and getting butthurt over the fact that you (of all people) could not possibly insult anyone on this board? Your claim of intellectual superiority is hysterical! You need it spelled out again? I can do short words for you since you're dumb with no brain. That better?

I am sincerely curious what the thought-process is for a low-life stalker bitch who thinks that real life residences has ANY relevance in a political discussion??

Your obvious anger pleases me. Cry more.

    Can you answer that??

Check your mirror for the "low-life stalker bitch" (your words) who claims to be intellectually superior and a Jack Reacher-style super cop yet could not stop himself from posting his personal information on an archived blog; your obvious problem is that the idiot looking back at you in the mirror and the person you believe "yerself" to be are two entirely different things.

Of course you can't.. You run away and hide like the cowardly scum-sucking bitch you are...

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you. Props to MyVoice for that one.

You done whining like a snowflake yet? You are never not done whining; you were played for the fool that you are years ago and can't get over being butthurt about it. Poor Mike. For all your constant whining about people running away, you are the only one I've seen on this forum who's actually done it... multiple times... whining and whimpering like a mewling stuck pig... only to return whining more and whimpering more. #SSDD

I reiterate: There is nothing that you of all people can say that can insult anyone else on this forum; there just isn't. You're nothing but a board troll with a limited repertoire of monotonous drivel and spew.

Because Democrats/Hillary are definitely going to jail (again) this time (they swear) just like last time (oh, wait).

You'd think the gullible rubes would eventually "clue in" to the fact they're getting played for suckers by the Fox News propaganda du jour, but... nope!

Can you not think of someone who is never not whining and never not done doing it?

I for one am never not done stopping the end of my non-whining.

And with whipped cream on top... on top of that, for sure. So you think I did not fail to not notice that about you? ;)

    I'm just getting started!

Wrong! Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever. ;)

Hey, Kick, thanks for the hat tip.

Also, too, I am totally with you on not getting angry
when someone is trying to goad anger. Works a treat every time; do carry on.

Hey, Kick, thanks for the hat tip.

You are most welcome; thanks for the tip tip. You just knew I would find an occasion to use it... even if it was almost two years later.

Although I will scroll past trollshit mountain faster than a mosquito running from a fly swatter, I am never not listening to the posts of the non trolls. :)

    Michale,

In light of recent facts, do you want to re-phrase ANY of your comments above???

Nope. Nothing that I said had occurred has changed or has been shown to have been untrue.

And no one, except Right Wing propaganda networks, is really impressed by John Durham’s filing on Friday because, as the Times notes: (1) Sussmann’s conversation with the CIA had already been reported last October (2) Durham never once said anything about the White House being “infiltrate[d]” (3) the special counsel also never claimed the Clinton campaign had paid Joffe’s company and (4) perhaps most importantly, “the filing never said the White House data that came under scrutiny was from the Trump era.” In fact, lawyers for the data scientist who helped develop the data analysis in question, say this happened during— wait for it—Barack Obama’s presidency.
