Will There Be A Biden Bounce?

[ Posted Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022 – 16:27 UTC ]

Is President Joe Biden poised on the brink of a resurgence in the polls? Well... maybe. It's no sure thing, but the conditions do seem to be improving for him so it wouldn't come as a complete surprise. The next two months will be key.

Presidents used to routinely get a bump just after their State Of The Union speeches to Congress, but these events have become less and less impactful over the past decade or so. Fewer people watch, being instead content to read or hear what someone else thought about the speech. But by at least one measure, Biden's speech last night was well-received by the people who did watch it -- a CBS insta-poll showed an astonishing 78 percent of those polled approved of his remarks while only 22 percent disapproved. Will that translate into better job approval ratings for Biden overall? It's certainly possible.

Biden's average job approval was healthy up until around the end of last July. At that time, COVID-19 seemed to be a thing of the past and American troops were still in Afghanistan. Biden's numbers then sank from 52 percent approval down to 45 percent approval after the disastrous Afghanistan military withdrawal took place. This was closely followed by a new and very deadly wave of the pandemic, the Delta variant. All through the fall, things seemed to be getting worse for Americans, and Biden's numbers reflected this gloom, sinking even further down to the low 40s. During this period, Congress struggled to get anything done, which certainly didn't help Biden. They finally did produce a bipartisan infrastructure bill, but could not manage to pass the Build Back Better plan through the Senate. Constant "Democrats In Disarray" headlines were the backdrop to Biden's dismal approval rating. His numbers did start to climb somewhat after the infrastructure deal went through, rising back up to 44 percent, but just after this came the Omicron wave. This was beyond disappointing for America, because we all seemed to be stuck in a painful loop we might never escape from. Biden's numbers fell once again, to hover just above 40 percent.

Last night, Biden realigned his presidency. America can certainly come together in standing against Vladimir Putin, and Biden proved how effective this can be for him. Taking a pro-Putin stance is simply no longer possible (for the Republicans who have been openly flirting with such a stance, and even for the right-wing media personalities). The world is standing with Ukraine, and that now includes Americans across the entire political spectrum. Such unity on matters beyond our shores used to be so commonplace it was barely worth noting, but these days it's more of a rarity. So far, President Biden hasn't made any missteps in his handling of the situation, moving decisively but gradually -- and always with Europe on board. That is true American leadership of a type not seen since the Cold War, and the American public appreciates it.

The country is also fast approaching the point we were at last summer in the pandemic fight as well. That is going to lead to an overwhelming feeling of relief in the public at large. Everybody wants this to be over, as soon as possible. And -- importantly -- everyone is going to also want to quickly forget the pandemic times. Masks will disappear outside of hospitals once again. People won't be afraid to travel or socialize. Things will return not so much to a pre-pandemic normal (since some changes will likely be permanent, such as employers welcoming work-at-home arrangements), but to at least a feeling of a new normal without medical fears being dominant.

This may do more for Biden's approval rating than anything else. Perhaps it's not fair, but when people generally feel better about their lives they are a lot more willing to give politicians the benefit of the doubt. It's just a political fact, even when the president has little to do with something like the mutation rate of a virus. And the pandemic's ebb is going to happen fast -- within weeks, not months.

Politically, Democrats are poised for a victory that won't change the balance of power on the Supreme Court, but will do them some good with their base voters. Seeing the first Black woman on the highest court in the land is more than just symbolic, it is institutional change. Change Biden promised and will make happen. That's a clear political victory for him, obviously. This may even help him with independent voters, who are the key to getting his ratings from the low 40s back above 50 percent again.

Base Democratic voters will also finally get some televised hearings from the January 6th House committee, which should have a rallying effect for Biden as well. So far the committee hasn't leaked all that much, so there will be some genuinely startling revelations in the next few months, and then a full report before the midterms.

Biden laid out the usual legislative laundry list in his speech last night, but he kept his ambitions fairly modest. Everyone knows that unless Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are on board nothing is going to pass, so Biden's agenda items admitted this political reality, for the most part. Biden tried to rebrand several key pieces of his Build Back Better plan as "Build a better America," but we'll have to see what Manchin will actually support before knowing what the chances of passing anything will be. Biden did lay out some possibilities for bipartisan agreement, but it's doubtful any of this will pass before the midterms. Republicans will not want to hand Biden a political win just before the election, and they expect to be in a much stronger bargaining position afterwards, so they'll almost certainly wait. Perhaps some agreement on the four items Biden laid out will eventually happen, but I seriously doubt it'll happen before November.

All of these things together could easily contribute to Biden regaining some ground in job approval. The biggest factor that is really beyond Biden's control is going to be inflation, though. If inflation stays high, Republicans will hammer the issue from now until November. If the inflation number starts to come down, Democrats will be able to counter with: "things are getting better, it was just COVID," but if it stays high they will remain politically vulnerable. This more than any other factor may determine the outcome in the midterms, in fact.

With the economy doing great in general with unemployment at historic lows and wages rising, if inflation does recede people are going to start feeling a lot better about their own lives and future. If the pandemic truly does disappear into the rearview mirror, the feeling that we're all in a crisis will lift as well. If by November people have to think hard to remember what it was like to walk into a store wearing a mask, their outlook is going to be a lot sunnier. And with the nation rallying around the fight against Russia in a truly unified spirit, Biden could indeed start to see a bounce in his numbers develop soon. His speech last night was overwhelmingly well-received (if that poll proves to be correct), so this could be the turning point where Biden sees a resurgence in the polls. The conditions for such a Biden bounce seem to all be present.

The land of my Ancestors is putting up a better fight than I dared hope. Seems Russia ain't so strong and the Ukrainians seriously stronger than in 2014.

The world is hitting Russia (including the oligarchs this time) in the wallet hard.

They're one of the power centers that Putin simply cannot lose. Setting aside political pressure from the general population, if Putin loses the oligarchs and the Army I can see them forking Putin over to The Hague in exchange from an acceptable peace. A splendid moment to negotiate a buffer state arrangement that allows Russia some strategic peace of mind in exchange for these neighboring states maintaining full sovereignty. Just one of many possible end game outcomes.

    Meanwhile...fuck 'em up, Ukraine!

    @rush,

Well…DUH!!!! Of course areas in the country with some of the highest levels of crime ALSO have some of the STRICTEST gun laws. The stricter laws were put in place BECAUSE of the higher rates of violent crimes that part of the country was suffering from.

And OBVIOUSLY strict gun laws DO NOT have any impact of violent crime...

    DUH....

The FACTS clearly show that the availability of firearms has little to nothing to do with violent crime statistics.. This is only true if you define “the availability of firearms” to be “the ability to procure NEW firearms”. The problem is the “availability to firearms” that is defined as “the access to firearms already owned”. The guns that are already out among the masses are the problem.

And yet, the areas that have the LOOSEST gun laws, have some of the lowest levels of violent crime..

So, to ANYONE with more than two brain cells to rub together, there is absolutely NO causation between availability of guns and violent crime..

Yet, ALL Democrats scream about is guns...

Which makes DEMOCRATS the stupidest people on the planet..

Wishful thinking has the upper hand in the battle to shape Western perceptions of the war in Ukraine.

Sympathy for the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of Kyiv has led to the exaggeration of Russian setbacks, misunderstanding of Russian strategy, and even baseless claims from amateur psychoanalysts that Putin has lost his mind.

A more sober analysis shows that Russia may have sought a knockout blow, but always had well-laid plans for follow-on assaults if its initial moves proved insufficient.

The world has underestimated Putin before and those mistakes have led, in part, to this tragedy in Ukraine.

Just two days into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, U.S. Department of Defense briefers were quick to claim that failing to take Kyiv in the opening days of the war amounted to a serious setback.

DoD briefers implied that Russia's offensive was well behind schedule or had even failed because the capital had not fallen.

But U.S. leaders should have learned to restrain their hopes after their catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Once again, U.S. and Western officials are falling into the trap of failing to understand the enemy and his objectives.

Russian advance forces, including air, mobile and reconnaissance troops, have been engaged with Ukrainian troops outside of Kyiv since the start of the war.

A massive column of Russian troops, estimated at over 40 miles long, is just 20 miles north of Kyiv, and is likely assembling to surround the capital.

If Russian forces can take Kyiv and push southward to link up with forces on the Crimean front, thus splitting Ukraine in two, it would be a major blow to the Zelensky government.

What matters more than a handful of setbacks is that Russian forces have pushed 70 miles into contested terrain in less than a week and are on the outskirts of the capital.

This is not a sign of a disorganized, poorly assembled, and failed offensive.

I would ask you people to set aside political bigotry and actually THINK for a moment..

But I know what a useless ask that is, so I won't even bother..

The facts are clear.. The propagandists in the west crow on and on that everything didn't go perfect for Russia, so now Russia is demoralized and will pack up and go home..

Last November, the Racine County Sheriff's Office requested that the state attorney general investigate alleged illegal directives issued by the Wisconsin Election Commission to bypass the state's Special Voting Deputy process, under which the clerk of each municipality brings "enough ballots to each residential care facility to vote" and "assist the voters with the voting process."

Instead, the commission had absentee ballots sent to nursing home residents by mail. The sheriff found that facility staff, under the guise of "helping" residents to vote, coaxed votes from some whom family members believed incapable of voting.

Jen Psaki Notices an Interesting Pattern About Putin's Invasions

During an interview with CNN Wednesday morning, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about President Vladimir Putin's ongoing assault on Ukraine, where he is targeting civilians, media outlets and hospitals. Russian troops are also reportedly blocking civilians from evacuating major cities.

After the anchor pointed out troop movements on a map, Psaki pointed out a pattern.

"I was at the State Department, the President was the Vice President the last time Putin invaded Ukraine," Psaki said.

While Putin invaded Ukraine during the Obama administration in 2014 and is doing so now under the President Biden, he didn't do so during the Trump administration.

Border Patrol agents don't buy Biden pledge to secure border as they deal with migrant crisis: 'Full of s---'

Biden 'doesn't care about secure borders,' border agent tells Fox News Digital
FIRST ON FOX: President Biden, in his State of the Union on Tuesday, said he wants to secure the southern border – a pledge that immediately drew anger and mockery from Border Patrol agents who have dealt with the migrant crisis that surged under Biden’s watch.

"Folks, if we are to advance liberty and justice, we need to secure our border and fix the immigration system," Biden said on Tuesday night. "And as you might guess, I think we can do both."

While the call drew applause from Democrats in the chamber, agents who had served on the front line of the crisis were not jumping to their feet.

"Very few people within CBP believe this administration will actually secure the border, they just do not believe in it," one agent told Fox News Digital. "All of their actions, comments and practices are solely about pushing in as many illegal aliens as possible, not just those from the Americas but from around the world."

Other agents were more blunt in their assessment of the president’s remarks.

"F---ing pandering 101, full of sh--," one agent told Fox News.

    "I laughed," said another

Another said they didn’t even turn it on: "Figured it would be all lies and smoke…We’re losing so many agents, they’re fed up."

"We all know he doesn't care about secure borders," another agent told Fox.

It's all just lip service.. Biden can, on occasion, talk the talk..

There were approximately 1.7 million migrant encounters at the border in Fiscal Year 2021 as numbers flooded to the border. The Biden administration has blamed "root causes" like violence and poverty in Central America, but Republicans (and many Border Patrol agents) have pointed to the rollback of Trump-era border protections, reduced interior enforcement and calls from Washington D.C. for amnesty for illegal immigrants as reasons for the surge.

Those "root causes" have always been part and parcel to border issues. None of that has changed..

What HAS changed is the promiscuous nature of border enforcement..

President Trump cracked down.. Even Democrat mayors along border towns have stated for the record that the border was MUCH BETTER under President Trump..

It's Democrat policy of importing as many illegal voters as possible...

THAT is the problem with the southern border..

On Tuesday, Biden said that his administration has installed "new technology like cutting-edge scanners to better detect drug smuggling" and set up joint patrols with Mexico and Guatemala to catch traffickers. He also said that more immigration judges are now in place, so cases can be heard faster and those who don’t have a valid asylum claim "can be sent back."

But one of the Border Patrol agents who spoke to Fox downplayed those moves, saying increased technology matters little if there are no agents to respond.

"Immigration judges usually tend to follow the tendencies or intentions of their appointing administration, that means I and many other agents have little faith in them to actually follow immigration law," they said. "The vast majority of these illegal aliens have no legitimate claims to asylum but administration-picked and taxpayer-funded lawyers will argue otherwise. Unemployment, inability to buy groceries, domestic violence, bad schools and bad weather are not legitimate claims, period."

Biden went on to call for an immigration reform bill, including amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country, as well as revisions to the law to move legal immigrants into the country quicker.

"Let’s get it done once and for all," he said.

Yep.. Get illegals into the country quicker. So they can vote illegally..

THAT has been the Democrat plan all along..

Biden's Worst Days are Yet to Come

    Big speech foretells big problems

Joe Biden’s first state of the Union address should be his last. His sanctimonies, blame shifting, misstatements, false accusations, and adherence to failed policies only reinforced what an increasing number of people know: this man is a walking disaster—America’s worst modern president.

Biden began with a justification of his policies that failed to prevent Russia from invading Ukraine—in fact, which effectively encouraged Russia to invade. Ukraine was supposed to be Biden’s Cuban Missile Crisis. Talk tough and then take credit when the Russians back down.

But Biden is no John F. Kennedy. Russian President Vladimir Putin knows a bluffing fool when he sees one. Biden said a “minor incursion” into Ukraine would be acceptable and that Putin “has to do something.” And so he did.

Biden also talked up the out-of-control spending that he says saved an American economy that had recovered before he became president. In fact, the “American Rescue Plan” and other attempts by the ruling elite to use the coronavirus crisis to remake America meant wasting a huge amount of money and helping to spark high inflation unseen since the 1970s along with a debt level worse than France’s. Biden promised even more in his speech—to the cheers of his fellow leftwing progressives.

The simple fact is, Basement Biden's presidency is a long slow-motion 4 year train wreck..

Unfortunately for this country, Basement Biden and the Democrat Party have no where to go but down..

“Four-dollar-a-gallon” Biden has a plan to cut gas costs that will actually raise the price of gas—which in turn raises the price of everything. He wants to “cut energy costs for families an average of $500 a year by combatting climate change.” Did you get that? Cut the cost of energy by raising the cost of energy—which is what our ruling elite wants most in sacrifice to their secular religion of climate change alarmism. American oil production is still 1.5 million barrels per day below where it was before coronavirus because Biden and others Democrats are at war with oil and gas.

Basement Biden and the Democrats' adherence to the bullshit climate change con really hurt the American people..

We see that at the gas pump...

Biden took credit for progress against coronavirus, which killed more Americans on his watch than that of his predecessor, Donald Trump, despite Biden’s promise to “shut down” the virus. The commander in chief of vaccine mandates and forcing kids pointlessly to wear masks bragged that because of new guidelines issued by the CDC just before his speech “...most Americans in most of the country can now be mask free.” It’s amazing how the science changed just in time! Most Americans can be forgiven for thinking the coronavirus crisis ended as the disease ran its course.

Basement Biden had MORE COVID deaths than President Trump...

And THEN we come to learn that Basement Biden and the Democrats WEREN'T relying on science at all..

The ENTIRE COVID response from Basement Biden and the Democrats was SOLELY, COMPLETELY and UTTERLY based on POLITICS...

Masks don't work.. This is FACT...

Shutdowns don't work.. This is FACT..

COVID was ALL about politics with Democrats..

Inflation will only get worse, but it will be displaced from headlines by the reemergence of another word from the past: stagflation. All Biden had to do was keep out of the way while the roaring Trump economy came back to full throttle after the coronavirus disruptions of 2020. Instead, Biden and the progressive Left in Congress have put the government in charge of the economy and killed off tens of thousands of small businesses. He’s at war with American energy companies. The Left’s woke crusade has elevated mediocrities to the top of our corporations. Suddenly what was a roaring economy is teetering close to zero growth. The Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank’s “GDPNow” model indicates that growth for the first quarter of this year will be 0% on the nose. That is down from a consensus estimate of nearly 4% around Christmas. Low growth and high inflation means that Four-dollar-a-gallon Joe will preside over stagflation and sink lower still in approval polls.

Nope, you're not being asked to censor anything (well, except the profanity). You are being asked to MODERATE the QUANTITY of repeating that same viewpoint over and over and over again.

There's a difference. Go back and read what I read -- where do I ask you to censor your viewpoint? All I ask is that you express your viewpoint a few times, and then not repeat it every 5 minutes for the rest of the day.

You speak of the days of old on this blog, well I remember when one daily column didn't generate 200-600 comments. People discussed the column, went off on tangents, argued with each other, and had some fun along the way. Instead of having to scroll through miles of you ignoring all evidence not to your liking and proclaiming every opinion you have as FACT FACT FACT when they are actually just that -- one man's opinion.

Asking you to stop posting bullshit doesn't constitute censorship or extortion or any manner of the other bullshit you keep claiming in your perpetual state of whiney victimhood and falling all over yourself to prove your ignorance regarding the law.

Your threats and your extortion not getting the results you want??

The only threats I have seen on this archived board are:

    (1) When you threatened in a post to Russ that you would file a police report on Devon (an actual police officer) in Washington State.

    (2) This post of yours:

Many economic indicators are strong, but with inflation running rampant, this means little to working families, who see their paychecks covering less and less of what they need.
