McCarthy Gives Cawthorn A Stern Talking-To, But Refuses To Actually Do Anything

[ Posted Wednesday, March 30th, 2022 – 15:13 UTC ]

The only sin a Republican can commit these days that merits any sort of consequences from members of their own party seems to be to badmouth or otherwise cast aspersions on either (1) Donald Trump, or (2) any Republican politician in good standing with Donald Trump. This is the new GOP Rubicon, it seems. Falling afoul of this standard means shunning and perhaps excommunication from the Republican ranks, but anything short of it (and it's getting more and more obvious that they really do mean anything) might lead to a strong talking-to, at worst.

This morning the news broke that Kevin McCarthy, the invertebrate leader of House Republicans, together with Minority Whip Steve Scalise had a little sit-down chat with Madison Cawthorn. The meeting reportedly only lasted half an hour. I guess it didn't take too long to call Cawthorn on the carpet for his recent avowal that his fellow Republicans in Congress were blatantly snorting cocaine around him and inviting him to wild orgies -- even though they're in their 60s or 70s.

Here's the story and the full quote, for anyone who hasn't already heard about it:

In an interview last week with the "Warrior Poet Society" podcast, Cawthorn was asked whether the hit television show House of Cards was an accurate reflection of life in the nation's capital. Cawthorn responded by talking about the "sexual perversion that goes on in Washington" and suggested that he had been invited to an "orgy" by an unnamed lawmaker.

"I mean, being kind of a young guy in Washington, where the average age is probably 60 or 70 -- you know, I look at all these people, a lot of them that I've always looked up to through my life, always paid attention to politics, guys that, you know. Then all of the sudden you get invited to, like, 'Oh hey, we're going to have kind of a sexual get-together at one of our homes. You should come,'" Cawthorn said in the interview, which was reported Sunday by Business Insider. "And I'm like, 'What? What did you just ask me to come to?' And then you realize they're asking you to come to an orgy."

Cawthorn also claimed that he had witnessed unnamed prominent figures in Washington doing cocaine.

"Or the fact that, you know, there's some of the people that are leading on the movement to try and remove addiction in our country, and then you watch them do a key bump of cocaine right in front of you. And it's like, this is wild," he said.

This isn't the only time Cawthorn has caused some raised eyebrows of late, either:

In addition to the orgy-cocaine claims, McCarthy also cited Cawthorn's calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "thug" as problematic. Plus, Cawthorn had caused another controversy when he lied to an officer in the Capitol, saying GOP congressional candidate Robby Starbuck was one of his staffers to bring him onto the House floor. Additionally, McCarthy said it's unacceptable for a member of Congress to be caught driving without a license after failing to show up to court.

If you're unsure of what that last one refers to, the Washington Post had more details:

But his actions and statements have also prompted scrutiny. Earlier this month, Cawthorn was charged for the second time in his home state with driving with a revoked license, an offense that carries a maximum $200 fine or 20 days in jail.

He also faces two speeding citations -- one for driving 89 miles per hour in a 65-mile-per-hour zone Oct. 18, and another for driving 87 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone on Jan. 8, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

But back to the whole coke-n-orgies thing. Astonishingly, Republican constituents have been calling their representatives to ask what the heck is going on up on Capitol Hill, which surely must be annoying. Even more astonishingly, some Republicans are calling on Cawthorn to actually name names:

"It does paint the picture here that isn't accurate," Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Tex., told The Daily Beast. "Name names. Let's see who he hangs out with."

"I think it is important, if you're going to say something like that, to name some names," echoed Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa. said in an interview with Politico.

"You should have to name names if you are going to go make those kinds of brush stroke accusations and impugn the character of people in this institution or... anybody else in this town," another House Republican added.

McCarthy, after his meeting with Cawthorn, made a public statement intended to calm everyone down a bit:

And McCarthy had some information for Republican lawmakers who have called on Cawthorn to name names, too. The GOP leader said Cawthorn described the cocaine incident differently than he did in the podcast. Instead of a lawmaker, Cawthorn told McCarthy he believes "he thinks he saw maybe a staffer in a parking garage maybe 100 yards away," and that Cawthorn told him "he doesn't know what cocaine is."

In other words, Cawthorn is just a garden-variety liar. "Doesn't know what cocaine is"? Seriously? How strange! He doesn't even know what the stuff is, but he used a specific term like "key bump" when talking about it in an interview? This is a downright laughable attempt at spin, but who knows what Republicans are willing to say they believe these days, right?

And of course, the GOP leaders had some strong words for Cawthorn, or so they said:

"There's a lot of different things that can happen. But I just told him he's lost my trust. He's going to have to earn it back," McCarthy said when asked if Cawthorn could face consequences for his actions, including losing his committee positions. "I mean, he's got a lot of members very upset."

McCarthy said that, during their private talk, he pointed to "certain things" Cawthorn needed to start doing professionally and in "his own life as well." And he isn't discounting more meetings with the freshman lawmaker, saying there "very well could be" more conversations with Cawthorn as GOP leaders assess "what actions are taken" by him.

"You can't make statements like that as a member of Congress, it affects everybody else and the country as a whole," McCarthy added.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said in an interview that, during their meeting with Cawthorn, the House GOP's top two leaders "expressed real concern with some of the things that he's done recently. And obviously, the ball's in his court in terms of how to respond. But we were very clear with the concerns we had -- and a lot of other members too."

Of course, McCarthy didn't actually strip Cawthorn of his committee assignments, because that sort of punishment is reserved for those who commit the worst sins -- like placing fidelity to the Constitution and your oath of office above Donald Trump, for instance. Because these days, that's really the only punishable sin, as the article later pointed out:

It was a notable dressing down from a Republican leader who at other times has seemed content to leave troublesome members alone. McCarthy was pressured to address another controversy within his ranks just weeks ago, when Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) attended an event led by a known white nationalist. McCarthy was less critical about Greene's behavior, saying he met with the Georgia firebrand on the matter and that she wouldn't do it again. It is unclear if he met with Gosar.

The Freedom Caucus is also reportedly annoyed at Cawthorn, but while a few members have called for the caucus to kick him out, it's not likely they will -- the remarks instead are seen as "more rattling and venting than an actual likelihood" of such a fate.

At least one Republican is not buying the spin from McCarthy and Scalise, however:

Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) suggested he won't be satisfied if the conversation with the GOP leaders ended with a simple promise from Cawthorn that he won't make comments or suggestions like this again, noting that he has repeatedly caused headaches for the GOP conference.

"Depends on what the outcome of the meeting was," Womack said in an interview. "If it's: 'Hey, don't do that, again.' We've been there. That hasn't worked. Frankly, if western North Carolina is not going to fix the problem, then leadership will have to."

But, of course, they won't, because doing so would require McCarthy to have an actual backbone. As Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez poignantly pointed out in a tweet, which is a good place to end on:

Not sure why Republicans are acting so shocked by Cawthorn's alleged revelations about their party. One of their members is being investigated for sex trafficking a minor and they've been pretty OK w/ that. They issued more consequences to members who voted to impeach Trump.

    Priceless.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT this is nothing new from the Pretend Party of America.

The Party that pretends that trickle down actually works for ALL Americans.

Pretending that Dubya and Cheetogod weren't massive failures, both of them running up the deficit (no millionaire left behind,) trashing our economy and embarrassing us on the world stage.

Pretending that Mexico is going to pay for the wall and that the J6 Insurrectionists were tourists engaging in normal political discourse. Or else Antifa.

Pretending that Governmental control of women's uteruses isn't Big Government while pretending criminal behavior is Patriotism.

Again, as long as these racists/rubes/religious whackos get their reality from right-wing media they don't really care what the rest of us think.

Why would Cawthorn be invited to an orgy? What purpose could he possibly have for being at an orgy? If the girl who normally works the “Clothes Check” booth couldn’t find a babysitter and had to cancel last minute… so they are desperate!??!

They could wheel him onto the middle of the floor, lock the chair’s brakes, and then use his slimy self as a lubrication station, maybe?

I guess they could always put a furniture box over him and his wheelchair, cut out a couple of holes in the box and Maddy is a “Rolling Glory Hole”!

Cawthorn also claimed that he had witnessed unnamed prominent figures in Washington doing cocaine.

Good to hear that they finally made the VIP Room at the RNC wheelchair accessible. It’s either that or Kimberly Guilfoyle and Donald Trump Jr. are now considered “prominent figures” for some reason.

The Democrats’ House Majority PAC is spending nearly $102 million to reserve advertising time in 51 media markets, staking out a broad battlefield for the coming midterm elections.

WASHINGTON — The House Democrats’ main political action committee is spending nearly $102 million to reserve advertising spots in 50 media markets, from Bangor, Maine, to San Diego, Calif., a battlefield that is considerably larger and more expensive than it was in the past two congressional elections.

The breadth of the congressional map reveals the scope of Democrats’ worries about holding seats in midterm elections. Areas once considered safe, like South Texas, greater Pittsburgh and Seattle will see Democratic advertising.

Republican Dan Conston of the Congressional Leadership Fund, said the huge expenditure is a sign of weakness and an admission that inflation, rising crime rates and an unpopular Democratic president will not only cost Democrats swing districts but also make some districts President Biden won handily fiercely competitive.

“I think they believe they’ve already lost the majority,” he said. “This is about staving off losses in some deep blue, traditionally Democratic areas.”

Russia's ruble and banking system are showing continued signs of recovery from the initial punch of sanctions, as Moscow relies on energy exports and currency controls to partly protect the nation's economy.

After initially plummeting, the ruble has rebounded and is edging closer to the value it held before the war began, according to the official exchange rate. And the banking system is gradually stabilizing as panicked customer withdrawals subside, economists say.

Some of the recovery is artificial, made possible by strict limits that the central bank, the Bank of Russia, has placed on currency exchange, withdrawals and hard-currency transfers overseas. But it is also due to a very real factor still working in Russia's favor: strong oil and gas exports that bring a flood of hard currency into the country.

    BIDEN SCANDALS
Even The Big Media Can No Longer Ignore Biden Family’s Corruption

At long last, the mainstream media are paying some attention to the obvious corruption of President Joe Biden’s family and its many business partners, which include the Chinese government and Russian oligarchs. These things have been known for years. Why are the Big Media only now looking into them?

And why, not really knowing anything at all about what was going on, do Twitter and Facebook still censor those who report on the Bidens’ questionable overseas business activities?

Finally, both the New York Times and Washington Post have been forced to admit that Hunter Biden’s lost laptop is real, not a “fake” or a Russian fabrication, and that it contains a trove of damning evidence (22,000 emails “authenticated”) of Biden family corruption.

The family’s dealings with the communist Chinese government and powerful officials in both Russia and Ukraine are so numerous and so byzantine it’s not possible to describe them all in this limited space.

And they’re not new. Credible reports of corruption have circulated for years in American digital samizdat circles and on alternative media and conservative web sites.

But the Washington Post has added one new, politically explosive, chapter to this whole bizarre tale.

While many aspects of Hunter Biden’s financial arrangement with CEFC China Energy have been previously reported and were included in a Republican-led Senate report from 2020, a Washington Post review confirmed many of the key details and found additional documents showing Biden family interactions with Chinese executives.

Over the course of 14 months, the Chinese energy conglomerate and its executives paid $4.8 million to entities controlled by Hunter Biden and his uncle, according to government records, court documents and newly disclosed bank statements, as well as emails contained on a copy of a laptop hard drive that purportedly once belonged to Hunter Biden …

The new documents — which include a signed copy of a $1 million legal retainer, emails related to the wire transfers, and $3.8 million in consulting fees that are confirmed in new bank records and agreements signed by Hunter Biden — illustrate the ways in which his family profited from relationships built over Joe Biden’s decades in public service …

The contract, signed on Aug. 2, 2017, stated that Hunter Biden would get a one-time retainer of $500,000 and would then receive a monthly stipend of $100,000, with his uncle James Biden getting $65,000 a month …

The potential energy projects Hunter Biden discussed with CEFC never came to fruition.

Meanwhile, in yet another revelation, an investigation by Republican Sens. Charles Grassley and Ron Johnson unveiled copies of a receipt for $100,000 to Hunter Biden from Chinese oligarchs with close ties to the CCP. The investigation has also detailed “millions” in other Chinese payments to firms tied to the Bidens.

In short it’s a massive scandal.

There is simply NO rational or valid argument that can dispute the FACTS as laid out by the NY Times and WaPo....

    It's that simple...

The facts that WOULD have prevented Joe Biden from being elected are coming out now..

And it's going to hurt Democrats very badly in 2022 and will kill ANY chance of Joe Biden running for re-election..

Wonders never cease. First the New York Times. Then CNN. Now the Washington Post has caught up with the Hunter Biden laptop story — only 18 months after the New York Post broke the scandal, and too late for the 2020 election.

But now, after our story was censored by Big Tech and dismissed as “Russian disinformation” by Democratic prevaricator Adam Schiff, and 51 former spooks led by former CIA Director John Brennan, apparently it’s safe to admit the laptop is real and the emails we published can be easily authenticated.

I think the media companies were right to block that story. It was a pathetic attempt at an October surprise, and it's own version of fraud.

Now what I find interesting is that you and the media you parrot ignore quite a bit of the NYT and WaPo articles. They think the files probably come from the laptop but that is not confirmed by the only people that matter, those who are running the investigation. They mention that it is not known if the investigation is specifically looking at Hunter or mainly other's in the company he was working with. But most importantly, what's the crime? Hunter shows a pattern in his emails of wanting to follow the law to the letter and even recommending a law firm to hire to ensure that. Then you have to connect that to Joe, to which there are emails to say that did not happen. The Trump kids pull a few Hunter Bidens before breakfast before they turn to the actual illegal stuff, should the Democrats return the favor?

And what's up with Trump asking the enemy in wartime to dig up dirt on the sitting president son? That should be the real scandal. It certainly would be if the situation was reversed...

    Lemme put it more specifically..

Is it better that ONE child question their gender identity factually...

Or 30 children question their sexuality unwarranted-ly...

    Put it more succinctly..

Is it better for ONE child to be frak'ed in the head when he DOES have gender issues... Or better for 30 kids to be frak'ed in the head because they DON'T have gender issues??

Keeping in mind that, with the FL Parental Rights In Education Law, that one kid's PARENTS will be contacted if there is any indication of gender issues and can make appropriate medical decisions if there are an gender dysphoria issues that are present...

    Huh???

Florida’s bill, titled Parental Rights in Education, states that lessons about sexual orientation are banned outright in kindergarten through third grade. Which I assume means pronouns won’t be taught until 4th grade. Can’t teach pronouns without touching on sexual orientation.

The real problem with the bill is that it also prohibits lessons in other grades unless they are "age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate” — vague wording that intentionally allows plaintiffs to claim that they, alone, determine what is “appropriate” for their lil’ babies! The legislation failed to define what should be considered “appropriate” under the law which invites lawsuits against school systems.

It’s as if Republicans want school systems to be spending their budgets on lawsuits instead of on educating the children!

That is not only true now but, it was true before this war started. In fact, it is a truism and has been for more than thirty years.

Which is the quintessential definition of sqandered opportunities and a ridiculously unnecessary war.

I may have mentioned once or twice before that Ukraine will be in the same position it was before the war except that now it will probably have to give up more to end the war than it would have had to give up in negotiations to prevent war. That, and the fact that the lives of millions of Ukrainians wouldn't have had to be upended and lives would not have been lost at the hands of the Russian military.

This does not have to be called surrender, though, not by a long shot ... given the situation that has existed in Ukraine for the last decade. In any event, calling it surrender will not help Ukraine or its people.

No, parents are not to be contacted if their child indicates they are questioning their sexual orientation or gender orientation. That was removed from the legislation that the governor signed. I can only imagine how upsetting it must be for Republicans to lose this suicide inducing portion of the bill.

Are you OK with one child committing suicide as long as the other 30 aren’t exposed to something that their parents think would make them “uncomfortable”? I’ve never heard of a single kid being “frak’d up” by these topics being discussed. By all means point to the institution that they are being cared for in so that we can get them help. Or are you talking about the one’s who are “frak’d up” because they tried to come out to you? They were so “frak’d up” that you sent them to a “Pray the Gay Away” center and authorized their physical and mental abuse in order to “save their soul”!

If your son or daughter has the courage to tell you that they are gay and your first thought was to blame the school system for messing with your child’s brain and making them THINK that they are gay… YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!!

Joey, do you ever.. hang around the gymnasium?…

These are inappropriate conversations to have with such a young child. But a teenager who seeks out a trusted educator with questions that they do not feel they can ask their parents about… what could be inappropriate when it is the child initiating the conversation? If a child has specific questions or concerns on a subject, how can you say it is not appropriate to have a conversation with them? I’m not talking about a 5yo randomly asking about where babies come from — I’m talking about a kid having wrestled with a question for a long time and finally having the courage to ask it. Do you want a teacher turning away that child out of fear of losing their job if someone else — a person who didn’t see the desperation to talk to someone on the face of the child — does not think the child deserved answers???

No, there are already laws that definitely address such behavior as you are describing! This law would not bring criminal charges against a teacher who did such a thing… but it does allow the parents to sue which would make many teachers hesitant to have completely legal conversations that they would normally trust their best judgement to have.
