Big Lie Believers Now Pushing For "Amish Voting"

[ Posted Tuesday, April 5th, 2022 – 16:27 UTC ]

Donald Trump's Big Lie continues to reverberate through American politics. The latest iteration of this is a growing Republican push to ban all machines used in the elections process and instead hand-count all the ballots. They've even got a snappy slogan: "Vote Amish!" I suppose that's better than "Vote Luddite," since it has a distinctly American flavor. But the entire concept is so unworkable and ridiculous (and downright dangerous) that it would be a near-guarantee of more election chaos, longer waits before the counts are complete, and lots and lots of new opportunities for challenging vote results that Republicans don't like (when Republicans lose, in other words). Which could be the entire point, of course.

On the face of it, banning all machines from the elections process doesn't sound completely unreasonable, at least at first. If human beings hand-count every ballot, then we'll all know there was no possible nefarious machine intervention in the vote totals, right? There'd be no possible way to hack anything, in other words. That's the selling point they're using, to a Republican audience that already believes (without a tiny shred of any proof from anywhere) that the last election was "stolen" from them. If you work your way backwards from that preordained conclusion, then it's pretty easy to just assume that there must have been mechanical problems -- if the machines said Joe Biden won, then there must be something wrong with the machines! It's like a build-your-own conspiracy kit (Mike Lindell probably has one available on his pillow-hawking website, one would assume).

The Washington Post did a deep dive into this emerging phenomenon today, with plenty of examples of activist Republicans trying to get voting machines banned in individual counties across the country. So far, most of these efforts haven't borne fruit or have been defeated. But that hasn't stopped them from trying.

There are two types of machine involved in elections. The first is a voting machine. There are many types of voting machine, which even would have to include the gigantic old mechanical "pull the lever" machines many of us can still remember using (or our parents using). The older ones were analog, not digital -- they had little wheels and gears and counters that tallied the votes, not computers. More modern machines are (of course) computerized. They present you with a ballot on a touch-screen, you mark your choices, and the machine adds them up. But since the 2000 election fiasco, virtually all of them also create a paper ballot of some sort for the voter to inspect (to assure them their votes were recorded correctly). This allows for physical verification of the totals the machine reports. Then there is another level of voting machine, those that only count the votes. Voters use a sheet of paper to mark their choices, and then stacks of these ballots are fed into tabulating machines. If the vote is clearly marked, it is counted. If not, the ballot is spit out for a human being to interpret. But while previous efforts to reform the voting process have centered on the voting machines -- mostly to get rid of all the "paperless" ones from a few decades ago -- this new effort is much more concerned with banning the use of counting machines.

This is nothing short of insanity. Banning any machine in the entire process -- which probably would be favorably looked upon by Amish people -- means a much slower process all around, and it means the totals would be far less accurate. Humans screw things up at a higher rate than machines do, to put it bluntly. Human error would be part of the process from the start. And the more votes that are counted, these more these errors would add up and accumulate. People pushing to "Vote Amish!" are essentially asking for more inaccurate results.

Plus there is the time factor, and something rather glaring which the Washington Post article missed. They provide all the facts, but never reach the right conclusion. Start with the few places in America where votes are indeed still counted by hand. These are mostly small towns with very few voters. The top three states in terms of percentage of votes counted by hand are Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Think "town meeting" sort of government, in other words. Nationwide, only 0.2 percent of votes are counted by hand. Even in Vermont only 13.7 percent of the votes are hand-counted. Only three states have percentages above five percent. Only ten states have any votes counted by hand at all. It's just not very widely used, for obvious reasons.

The only places that still count votes by hand are small, and usually pretty rural. It's practicable to count all the votes by hand when there are only a few dozen of them in total (or even "a few hundred"). So there's no real delay in reporting the results.

But just think of what would happen if even a few medium-to-large red states passed a state law banning counting machines. You think it took too long to get the 2020 results reported? That'd be a cakewalk by comparison. It would take weeks to hand-count the ballots in a county like Maricopa County, Arizona (with 2 million votes cast in 2020). Weeks. If laws like this passed in ruby-red states where everyone knew the Republican was going to win anyway, it wouldn't be that big a deal, if all the blue and purple states still reported their results the night of the election (or within a few days, worst case). We would all know who had won by whether they had gotten enough blue/purple state votes or not. But if this passes in purple states (some of which have GOP-controlled state governments), then we're all going to be in for a very long wait.

The key point the Post article misses is that the vote-counting would be slowest in the precincts with the most voters. Think about it -- all the rural, small-county votes would arrive first. But all the cities would take a while, and big cities would take weeks. When you think about which type of voter lives where, you can instantly see the problem this would cause.

Donald Trump already tried to cast doubt on all the (Democratic) cities' vote totals, in 2020. He did so by believing the early trends in counting on the night of the election, when all the rural votes arrived first (for the most part). The cities took hours longer (since they have millions of ballots to count) and that's when the tide shifted in several states that Trump ultimately lost. Trump tried to blow a whistle in the middle of the process and proclaim himself the victor, based on the early results. Thankfully, this didn't work. But Trump really only had a couple of hours to make this attempt, in most states. And even in places like Arizona and Pennsylvania, he only had a few days.

But imagine that process taking weeks, not hours or days. That would leave plenty of time to challenge everything under the sun (both in courts and in the court of public opinion). Since Democratic-leaning votes would be the last to be counted, if any of these efforts succeeded they could hand the election to a Republican who didn't deserve it.

Which, as I began with, seems to be the whole point of this effort. Which is what makes it so dangerous. If a handful of purple states (Nevada, Michigan, maybe Georgia) banned all use of vote-counting machines, it would virtually guarantee that the only results available on Election Day would be the small and rural counties. The votes from the cities would take far longer to tally. Imagine what Republicans would be doing in the meantime. We already saw this happen in 2020, but on a much smaller scale than it would the next time around. This is precisely what the entire "Vote Amish!" movement seems to want to accomplish. As I said, so far they haven't managed to succeed much of anywhere, but this insidious effort certainly bears watching to prevent it from taking root.

The other interesting thing about our elections, well, two things, really ...

The campaigns last for about 30 days, give or take.

And, in federal elections, as for provincial elections, we vote for our riding Members of Parliament (Federal) or riding members of Provincial Pariliament or Legislative Assemblies (MPPs or MLAs) and NOT directly for the Prime Minister or Provincial Premier.

The leader of the party with the most votes becomes the PM or Premier.

In other words, we don't spend very much time at all on elections. Which suits me just fine.

And, just very recently, Prime Minister Trudeau, who currently enjoys, ahem, a minority government, signed a memorandum of understanding with the New Democratic Party that will ensure that we won't have a federal election for another five years or so ... of course, the Conservatives are crying foul but, who the heck cares about them, anyways!? :)

Yes, Democrats Can Make Things Even Worse for Themselves

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- If you’re like most Americans, you don’t think Joe Biden is doing well as president. Inflation is out of control. His administration appears to lack any viable plan to control border crossing. The president’s gaffes alternate between the amusing and the alarming. The Democratic Party seems headed for a pasting this November. But things could always be worse — and they would be if Biden listened to his left-wing critics.

They look at Democrats’ low poll numbers and think the way to raise them is to go even further left and to be even more partisan. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Bronx Democrat, recently said that Biden and other Democrats have erred by clinging to the outdated belief that bipartisan deals are possible. They are in danger of losing seats this fall, she claims, because they have catered to a dwindling group of independent voters rather than delivered for the party’s base.

That means they should play hardball with centrist Democrats such as Senators Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Ocasio-Cortez thinks that the failure of the Democrats’ “Build Back Better” initiative vindicated the legislative strategy that she and other progressives pursued: holding up passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill the moderates wanted to pressure them to support the social spending bonanza in Build Back Better.

It's a triply strange conclusion. First, the strategy failed: Progressives could not maintain the blockade against the infrastructure compromise. Second, a number of moderates indicated they were prepared to see both bills die rather than cave to the progressives. If the blockade had held, then, the result might have been no bills passed instead of one.

Third, the fact that the infrastructure bill became law, with Republicans providing the margin of victory in the House, invalidates Ocasio-Cortez’s premise that bipartisan deals are no longer possible. So does the passage of bipartisan bills to tackle Covid throughout 2020 and the recent passage of a federal anti-lynching law.

The notion that Ukraine was such an appealing democratic model in Eastern Europe that the country’s mere existence terrified Putin may be a comforting myth to U.S. politicians and pundits, but it is a myth. Ukraine is far from being a democratic-capitalist model and an irresistible magnet for Russia’s groaning masses. The reality is murkier and troubling: Ukraine has long been one of the more corrupt countries in the international system. In its annual report published in January 2022, Transparency International ranked Ukraine 123rd of the 180 countries it examined, with a score of 32 on a one to 100 point scale. By comparison, notoriously corrupt Russia ranked just modestly lower, 139th, with a score of 29.

Ukraine’s track record of protecting democracy and civil liberties is not much better than its performance on corruption. In Freedom House’s 2022 report, Ukraine is listed in the “partly free” category, with a score of 61 out of a possible 100. Other countries in that category include such bastions of liberal democracy as Rodrigo Duterte’s Philippines (55), Serbia (62), Hungary (59), and Singapore (47). Interestingly, Hungary—which has been a target of vitriolic criticism among progressives in the West because of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s conservative social policy—ranks eight points higher than Ukraine, which is the recipient of uncritical praise from the same Western ideological factions.

Results Are In: Republican Election Integrity Efforts Work

After the serious election integrity issues of 2020, Republican leaders and the Republican National Committee have not been idle, but responded on behalf of voters to ensure that free, fair, and transparent elections remain a hallmark of American democracy. Joe Biden and Democrats predictably have done everything under the sun to smear these efforts, even calling those everyday Americans who oppose the efforts racist. But now, over a year later, the results are in, and Democrats have been totally wrong.

Georgia and Texas are perfect examples. Almost a year ago, after the passage of SB 202 – a highly popular Republican-led election integrity law which expanded early voting, poll watching, and voter ID requirements – Democrats pulled out all thestops and started lying. They said the law was “racist,” would “suppress” voter turnout, and even backed a boycott meant to hurt small businesses, many of them black-owned. Essentially, they shamefully tried to stir up chaos along racial lines. But on Election Day, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution depicted a different scene entirely, writing that voters saw “short lines,” “few problems,” and no “obstacles at the polls.” It is time for all race-baiting Democrat politicians to stop their lies and admit their claims aren’t based in reality.

Texas is further proof of Democrats’ lies. In the first wave of major elections since its popular election integrity law Senate Bill 1 was enacted (containing a number of similar provisions to the Georgia bill), the state saw the highest voter turnout ever. In fact, turnout increased from 2.56 million votes in 2018 to over 2.93 million in 2020.

The rollout of Republican election integrity efforts in both Georgia and Texas not only disproves Democrats’ lie that Republican-led election integrity measures “suppress” voters, but also shows just how far left the Democrat rhetoric has deviated from the facts. Perhaps they are afraid of the results?

I still wear masks at work and on public transit. I also wear it when I'm inside indoor environments where I don't know if people have been vaccinated. Though, in Canada, we do have a pretty high vaccination rate but, still ... I prefer to be as careful as possible.

At the end of the month, I'll be going to a restaurant with live music (the Beggars Banquet, a local and phenomenal Rolling Stones tribute band!!! - can't wait, they are sooooooooooooo fun!) so my mask will be off while eating and drinking but, for the most part during the show I'll be wearing my outfit coordinated mask. Ahem.

Guess you think I'm a moron, too.

Well, the way I see it is that wearing a mask while we are still in the acute phase of this pandemic is a sign that we care about the health of the most vulnerable people in our communities who are most susceptible to COVID-19 disease.

Wearing a mask is a very small sacrifice to keep everyone around us safe.

As I am fully vaxed and boosted and as I have always been a hand-washer who doesn't touch their face unless their hands are clean, I'm not too worried about contributing to the transmission of this virus. And, frankly, wearing a mask isn't the most vital part of my protection strategy. So, my wearing a mask is more of a show of respect for others around me - I'm letting them know that I care about them and about keeping us all safe from this virus.

    Can you understand that?

Being that yer an old fart like me, that is your prerogative.. I don't agree with it, but that's yer choice...

    But we're talking kids here..

The SCIENCE has proven unequivocally that there is absolutely NO NEED to mask kids..

Absolutely... I understand it in the same sense I understand how there are Sheldon Coopers out there who are germaphobes... I don't begrudge them (or you) doing whatever they(you) feel you need to do to be comfortable in today's society...

Just don't condemn others who actually follow the science and know that life is a crapshoot anyways... We never know what's going to come our way...

It's called an analogy. Perhaps trump's area of similarity with Hitler is not physical or superficial, but it's just as distinctive as the mustache, and just as relevant to any other areas of comparison - which is to say, not at all. Trump campaigns like Hitler did, and to any student of history it's unnerving. But fortunately, other than German ancestry, that's just about the only thing the two have in common.

The facts are on my side..

Democrats knew that the Republican base was so conditioned to oppose ANYTHING the Democrats supported. They never believed that Republican Party would stand by and allow their base to put their lives at such great risk based on a lie. Donald Trump felt that the most dangerous aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t the potential loss of life or the economic damage, itself, but the potential damage to his re-election bid the virus might prove to be. That fear was evident and dictated Trump’s handling of the pandemic from the start. Keeping sick Americans on cruise ships from coming into port because it would increase the total number of confirmed cases too much. Suggesting that we wouldn’t have as many people sick if we simply stopped testing for the virus. He did not care whether you were sick or not, he only cared that you increased the number of total sick with the virus and that made him look bad! It’s why Trump declared victory over the virus in early 2020.
