Utah Democrats To Try A Political Experiment

[ Posted Monday, April 25th, 2022 – 15:38 UTC ]

Utah Democrats have just announced they're going to try an experiment. Instead of running a Democratic candidate in the upcoming Senate race, they are instead throwing their weight behind an Independent candidate, Evan McMullin. By doing so, they hope to boost his chances over the incumbent Republican Mike Lee. This is an experiment, so there's no guarantee it'll work -- but it undoubtedly will give McMullin a much better chance at beating Lee, so it will be very interesting to see play out.

America has two dominant political parties with a smattering of much smaller third parties. So when one of the big ones decides to sit out an important race, it is indeed noteworthy. Utah hasn't sent a Democrat to the Senate in over half a century though, so it's not like the Democrats had any real viable shot of dethroning Lee. But in a three-way race, they would probably have siphoned off enough votes to make it impossible for any third-party candidate to win.

McMullin ran as an Independent in the 2016 presidential race, mostly to give Republican voters in Utah a more palatable choice than having to vote for Donald Trump. He pulled in an impressive 21.5 percent of the vote in the state, but Trump still won the state with 45.5 percent. Hillary Clinton got 27.5 percent, meaning that 49 percent of the vote went for either the Democrat or McMullin. McMullin was either on the ballot or a write-in candidate in many other states, but other than Idaho (6.7 percent), he failed to top even two percent of the vote anywhere. Obviously, he was a "favorite son" candidate in Utah itself, and nothing more.

Of course, nobody knows how he'll do this time around. But Utah does have a history of electing strong conservatives to the Senate who are still rational (see: Mitt Romney) and have not gone down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. Mike Lee, on the other hand, started as a Tea Partier and has now gone full MAGA. So this will be a race between the Trump wing of the Republican Party and what's left of the old establishment Republicans.

Utah Democrats made a tough choice by backing McMullin, since he will never be a Democrat or a progressive. If elected, he will doubtlessly caucus with the Republicans and vote for Mitch McConnell for leader. Democrats are completely throwing in the towel and conceding before the race even begins.

But that seems to be the smart play for them, here. There is virtually no chance of a Democratic candidate winning this race, even with a strong third-party candidate in the mix. If the electorate isn't even 30 percent Democrats, then the other two candidates could split the rest of the vote, and one of them would still be likely to win. The only thing a Democratic candidate could do would be to be a spoiler for one or the other of the conservative candidates.

So they decided not to do that. Instead, they'll try to throw their weight behind McMullin in the hopes enough Republican voters are sick and tired of Lee's antics. This actually has a chance of working, although it is far too soon to tell how good a chance it'll be (but it will be interesting to see any new polling emerge).

When McMullin heard the news that the Democratic Party was getting behind him, he laid out the case for voting for him rather than Lee. It is a pro-democracy statement more than a partisan one:

We know that Sen. Mike Lee was quite involved in the effort to overturn our democracy. We have got to take a stand as Utahns. I don’t care if you're a Democrat or an Independent or a Republican or a member of the United Utah Party: This is a line that cannot be crossed. Our right to hold our leaders accountable and to vote for or against them and have a peaceful transition of power is essential for liberty and justice in America. We cannot compromise on that, and we must all be united to defend it.

The United Utah Party, described by the Deseret News as "centrist," will also be backing McMullin.

Not all Utah Democrats were thrilled with the decision. The vote to back McMullin rather than a candidate of their own was only 57-43 percent. A strong majority, but with a healthy amount of dissent. Not putting any candidate on the ballot didn't sit well with everyone, to put it mildly.

But it is the only viable chance to defeat a senator who (as was recently revealed) was openly plotting to overturn the free and fair results of a presidential election. Which doesn't exactly sit right with all Republican voters in the state.

Defeating Lee won't flip the seat to become Democratic, or progressive, or even particularly centrist. McMullin is a pretty staunch dyed-in-the-wool conservative. But he's a conservative who would actually believe and follow his oath of office to the United States Constitution -- which is far better than the alternative.

This sort of political machination might not be possible to be repeated elsewhere, but in at least one or two places perhaps it should. There are other red states where Democrats don't have a snowball's chance of winning that could see a three-way race between a sane Republican, a MAGA devotee, and a Democrat who has no chance of winning. Liz Cheney's case in Wyoming immediately springs to mind. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska also could be a possibility, depending on the outcome of both their primaries.

Of course, if I were a Utah Democrat, I would be disappointed in the fact that there will be no Democratic candidate on the Senate ballot for me to vote for. It seems more than a little disenfranchising. But I would understand that extraordinary times sometimes call for extraordinary actions. So whether I had to hold my nose or not to vote for a man who didn't share any of my political beliefs at all, I would indeed vote for him. Because he at least would share my faith in the American democratic system, and at least he would respect the results of an election and support the peaceful transfer of power above all else.

Which would be far better than the other alternative on the ballot.

An interesting piece. It reminded me strongly of a book I just finished, 'How Democracies Die', by Levitsky and Ziblatt (2019). The authors review how the biggest threat to democracies worldwide today is from 'populist' autocrats who are elected to office and then proceed to hijack the democratic process by incremental steps to restrict the vote and ensure a one-party domination, usually in the name of "protecting freedom", etc.

L & Z are not really very strong on recommending how democratic citizens can combat these men and their parties, but one of their ideas is that parties should make alliances with politically opposed parties that are also in favor of free elections, entirely on the basis of supporting democracy rather than autocracy. They offer some examples from history, in 1930s Europe and in 1970s Latin America; their suggestiong that today's Democrats do the same with the non-Trump Republicans rings kind of hollow because there are so few actual non-Trump Republicans.

But your story today of Utah's Democrats going with a conservative Independent who believes in democracy is exactly what they were talking about. It's not easy - many in the parties involved don't like it, giving aid and comfort to the enemy as it were. But that's the point - Independents and old-line non-Trump Republicans are not the 'enemy' anymore, compared to the Trumpists and their base of quasi-fascist white supremacists and autocrats, who are working around the clock right now to ensure that the 2024 presidential election will only have one acceptable outcome, no matter how the nation actually votes.

IMO we suffered through 12 years of Foreign Policy incompetence.

Barack Red Line in the Desert Obama didn't have the balls to stand up to anyone. While he read all of the intelligence material, he never spoke with any of his intel people and the resulting lack of back and forth left him in his own bubble.

Trump apparently didn't care to read anything whatsoever and was reportedly sometimes simply swayed by whomever he spoke with last. Especially if they're Mar-a-Lago whales. Putin helped elect Trump and Trump returned the solid by doing far more to weaken NATO than anything Putin could have done himself.

Putin saw Joe wasn't going to do the same so he jumped while he still had the chance. Which was arguably back in 2014.

    We agree on something.

Not sure what you mean by "name-checking".. Could you elaborate??

It's nothing sinister or negative, it just means mentioning someone's name (or pseudonym) in a public forum. When it's done multiple times across multiple comment boxes, it can send the impression you're wanting the attention of that person or you wish to elicit a response.

If anyone keeps calling my name repeatedly (name checking), I am likely to answer.

    And courtesy is NEVER unwelcome..

Yes, but confusing "disagreement" with "disrespect" and calling me out on it is a surefire way to stifle that "muscular debate" the Warden :D claims to want. After I was "named checked" multiple times, I wanted to let you know that I thought it was ridiculous for you to keep thanking me... and posting dedications. I didn't teach you anything, really.

Thanks again for your comments.. They are, as always (now) appreciated.. :D

Twitter fears sabotage by left-wing staff after Musk takeover: Developers are blocked from app after rebellious employees called deal 'dangerous for democracy' - and hysterical liberal social media personalities threat to QUIT social media giant

Complaints ranged from fears of his 'danger to democracy' to complaints they could be forced to stop WFH

Jameela Jamil led the charge of celebrities announcing they would abandon Twitter after Musk's purchase

Twitter has blocked its developers from making changes to the app to prevent it being sabotaged by left-wing staff angry at Elon Musk's $44billion takeover - amid an outbreak of hysteria among liberal social media personalities who are threatening to quit the social media giant.

The Tesla founder said he wanted to re-establish the principle of free speech on the platform and has joined criticism of its moderation policies which are accused of disproportionately targeting conservative voices, but his critics claim he will allow 'hate to flourish'.

Twitter has now banned any product updates that are not 'business-critical', with the company's vice-president required to give approval for any to go ahead. The move aims to prevent angry staff from 'going rogue', a source told Bloomberg, and comes after employees dismissed Musk as 'dangerous to democracy'.

Mr. Musk said that central to his vision for the service is for it to be an “inclusive arena for free speech,” but users should understand what that phrase means: It means free speech for people like Mr. Musk, a billionaire and the world’s richest man. Even as Twitter’s board on Monday was debating his offer of $54.20 per share, which it accepted, Mr. Musk was setting the tone for his leadership by tweeting that Securities and Exchange Commission officials were “shameless puppets.”

No it means FREE SPEECH for everyone, not just Democrat apparatchiks who toe and spew the Democrat Party line..

Blaaa blaaa blaaaa A bunch of baseless and factless accusations.. Then..

No wonder many Twitter employees are aghast at the prospect of Mr. Musk leading the company.

Aghast at losing the ability to silence facts and opinions that the Left Wing/Democrat Trump/America haters don't like...

THAT is all the whiners and cry babies are aghast at...

As with the motives for establishing those competitors, Mr. Musk’s reasons for taking control of Twitter aren’t about free speech; it’s about controlling a megaphone. With his legion of fans, Mr. Musk will command a gigantic megaphone and be free to plug his own investments, pooh-pooh sound health regulations and shout down critics.

Yes, controlling the megaphone and giving a megaphone to EACH Titter user who wants one..

Instead of the way it is now where only hysterical Left Wingers and Trump/America haters who use it to bully and censor opinions and facts that are contrary to the Democrat Party line...

Agreed.. Odumbo's lack of any testicular fortitude is directly tied to the mess that Ukraine is in today..

Er, regarding the use of Odumbo and Cheetogod do you want to experiment with a cease fire? Or is it simply too satisfying?

Yea, giving up Odumbo is a bridge too far.. I am hardly in a position to complain about your Cheetogod if I hold onto my Odumbo.. :D

There are no facts to support that claim..

Totally correct -- no Western aid and this war would be long over with.

But most of that aid came post invasion. First, the Ukrainians had to fight them to a standstill, which they did and continue to do.

If you just added the Polish Air Force to Ukraine’s the no-fly zone would be a done deal. That's how bad the Russian military is performing.

Odumbo's NATO would NEVER have been able to face down Russia in the here and now...

Unless they could travel forward in time. ;)

Not factually accurate.. You apparently are not up on current events.. John Durham has proven that all the Russia Collusion was nothing but fabrications..

    Heh. Nope.

Are you going to watch the Sussmann trial next month???

The Sussman trial is a 1-count false statement trial that John Durham and right-wing propaganda media are trying to misrepresent as a conspiracy that implicates Hillary Clinton, Christopher Steele, et alia.

It would not surprise me if Durham and his shoddy team sought a delay in the trial due to recent rulings. We shall see.

Kick had said that I wouldn't believe her but she can't talk about her Europe trip anyways..

A fair representation of what I "said."

I told her of course I would believe her.. What kind of idiot would LIE in a political forum just to score points..

Except you did not actually use the term "idiot," which in French would actually translate to "imbécile" or actually "idiot," which looks the same when written yet sounds totally different when spoken.

I also told her that having worked military areas in France and Israel and such, I understand the demands of a super secret classified mission et al..

You didn't say anything about France or Israel... tell us more!

Which is EXACTLY what Democrats who control FaceBook and Twitter did...

Why in the world do you suppose Rudy Giuliani didn't run straight to Fox News with his trove of emails?

Trick question. Of course, Rudy did exactly that; why wouldn't he? Fox News also passed on the story at that time due to the lack of authentication of Hunter's alleged laptop combined with Rudy asking for immediate coverage of the unvetted documents. So Rudy ventured over to Rupert Murdoch's other right-wing propaganda property where the reporter who largely wrote it, Bruce Golding, refused to put his name on the report because he doubted its credibility. The reporter whose name was eventually affixed to the story found out only after it was published.

Only after it was published by Murdoch's rag (Hamilton would roll over in his grave) the opinion shows on Fox then began covering the story and, of course, used the Post’s reporting as a shield and blamed the rest of the media for not covering the same story on which they passed.

The Fox News top anchors known to cover "real news" versus the "Donald Trump is the son of Zeus and can do no wrong" propaganda had this to say about the story:

Let’s say, just not sugarcoat it. The whole thing is sketchy.

You couldn’t write this script in 19 days from an election, but we are digging into where this computer is and the emails and the authenticity of it.

    ~ Bret Baier

    *
And remember who called the story “suspicious” and stated:

I can understand the concern about this story. It is completely unverified and frankly, Rudy Giuliani is not the most reliable source anymore. I hate to say that, but it’s just true.

    ~ Chris Wallace

    *
Remember that the CIA under the Trump administration had already warned the public to be aware of election disinformation:

    https://www.dni.gov/index.php/newsroom/press-releases/item/2139-statement-by-ncsc-director-william-evanina-election-threat-update-for-the-american-public

They banned a candidate and banned facts about the Democrat candidate that would have lost the election for Democrats..

Not impossible but highly unlikely... considering:

    (1) history of foreign interference
    (2) the veracity of the source
    (3) the story breaking after hundreds of millions had already voted
    (4) Hunter Biden not being on a single ballot in a single state or the District of Columbia.

I mean, would your vote have changed if the exact same story (or worse) had been written except the names involved were Donald J. Trump, Jr. and implicated Donald Trump?

Not bloody likely... and you know it. :)

    Toe-MAY-Toe

Speaking of which, I doubt you will learn of this in right-wing propaganda media, so I will do you "a solid" and tell you now:

Donald Trump (not Junior) testified regarding his fear of being hit with "toe-may-toes" and other fruit.
