Next Up: Georgia And Texas

[ Posted Monday, May 23rd, 2022 – 16:37 UTC ]

As we continue to wend our way through primary season, we now turn to the two states with the most interesting races to be decided tomorrow: Texas and Georgia. Georgia is more interesting on the Republican side, while there's one Texas race that Democrats will be closely watching.

Georgia

The two big reasons why Georgia is so interesting are that there are multiple races to watch, and Donald Trump cares more about the outcome here than perhaps in any other state in the country (with the possible exception of Liz Cheney's bid for re-election in Wyoming).

Some of the races won't get truly interesting until the general election, since Georgia has now joined the ranks of the purple states. Well... maybe. That's the big unanswered question: was the last election -- when Georgia sent two Democrats to the Senate -- just a fluke? Or was it a harbinger of a stronger Democratic presence in the state that will endure past 2020? Nobody really knows, at this point.

One of those Democrats is Senator Raphael Warnock, who will be defending his seat in November (since he won it in a special election -- it wasn't for a 6-year term). He will likely have to face former football star Herschel Walker, who has been leading the GOP polling by a wide margin. Walker has a lot of ugly baggage, but none of it is likely to stop him from winning tomorrow. He's been accused of violent threats and behavior by his ex-wife, he has written about struggling with mental illness (multiple personality disorder), he has blatantly lied about his past (such as claiming he graduated at the top of his class from the University of Georgia when the truth is he never actually graduated at all), he has exaggerated his success in the business world, and he was a paid spokesman for a for-profit business (that he tried to pass off as him founding a non-profit) that now stands accused of scamming or ripping off the federal government for payments for mental health treatments for veterans. When you read all that, you are left with one clear impression: Donald Trump must love this guy!

Snark aside, though, Walker is waltzing to victory in the Republican primary and will likely easily carry the day tomorrow. Since he is Black, perhaps Republicans feel he would have the best chance to take on Warnock, who is also Black. But it remains to be seen whether Walker will be able to split the Black vote in Georgia all that much. And while he has mostly had a cakewalk of a primary campaign -- insulated from any interviews outside of the right-wing media echo chamber, and refusing to take part in debates -- you can bet that the Warnock campaign already has a few ads ready to run which will inform Georgia voters about all of Walker's shortcomings as a potential senator (and human being).

The Georgia GOP race that is generating the most national interest is also likely to be a runaway tomorrow -- but will also be very interesting to watch in November. This one is personal, for Trump. And he's going to lose. The incumbent, Governor Brian Kemp, earned Trump's wrath when he refused to somehow magically (and illegally) steal the presidential election for Trump in 2020. It's pretty easy to see that Trump has hated Kemp with a passion ever since. Trump is not only behind Kemp's challenger David Perdue, but the way Perdue tells it, Trump was the one who convinced him to run in the first place. Trump has even done something he has noticeably refused to do for all the other candidates he has endorsed -- put some money into the effort. Team Trump has spent a few million dollars on the race, making it the only race he truly has invested in so far during the primary cycle.

But, like I said, Perdue is going to lose. The only real question is by how much. If Kemp tops 50 percent of the primary vote, he will avoid a runoff and win the nomination outright. Right now, he's polling at 60 percent or better, so that is looking eminently possible. Trump's personal hatred of Kemp is proving to be completely ineffective in this purple state, which will be the biggest headline of the night tomorrow.

On the Democratic side of this race, Stacey Abrams is poised to win the nomination, which will set up a return match between her and Kemp. The last time they faced each other in a governor's race, Kemp won by less than two percent. This time, things may be different, since Abrams has been devoting her life ever since to getting more Democrats registered in the state -- which paid off handsomely in the two Senate race upsets. This all makes this race perhaps the most interesting governor's race for November (although the Pennsylvania race will be a close second).

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is another Georgia Republican who earned Trump's wrath when he not only refused to "find 11,780 votes" to steal the state's election for him, but also because Raffensperger recorded the phone call (which many have noted resembles a mob boss giving orders to his henchmen) and leaked it to the public. This race is closer, with challenger Jody Hice neck-and-neck with Raffensperger in the polling. This will likely lead to a runoff election, since neither candidate is polling near the 50 percent mark.

Also up tomorrow night is incumbent Attorney General Chris Carr, who faces another Big Lie adherent angry about the fact that Georgia officials didn't just hand the state's electoral votes to Trump. Carr seems in pretty good shape in the polling, though he may fail to avoid a runoff election as well.

Trump may lose all three of these races tomorrow night, but he'll (of course) be out there bragging about the win for Herschel Walker. Trump's running tally of wins and losses from his endorsements in truly competitive races is a lot worse than he'll admit, reportedly "seven wins and four losses," which translates to only 64 percent. And at this point, it looks like that record is going to get worse tomorrow night.

Texas

Texas is holding their runoff primary election tomorrow, and the one that's got Democrats watching is a progressive attempting to successfully primary a sitting incumbent. Jessica Cisneros is not only in a runoff with Representative Henry Cuellar, it's also a rematch. Cisneros tried to beat him two years ago and got within four points of victory. This time around, the race was even tighter in the initial contest, with Cuellar only beating Cisneros by 1.5 points (there was a third candidate who drew off 4.7 percent of the vote, which was enough to send the race to tomorrow's runoff).

Originally a classic progressive-versus-conservative Democratic fight, with Cisneros endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, this race has quickly become somewhat of a referendum on abortion rights. Cuellar was one of only two Democrats (Senator Joe Manchin was the other) to vote against the Women's Health Protection Act, which would have codified abortion rights into federal law. So it's really seen now as an anti-abortion Democratic incumbent trying to fend off a challenge from a decidedly pro-choice upstart.

Also confusing things is the fact that Cuellar's house was recently raided by the F.B.I., who are looking into allegations of improper influence from Azerbaijan. Cuellar hasn't been accused of a crime yet, but there is a grand jury examining things, and having your house raided by the F.B.I. can never really be seen as a campaign asset for any politician.

No matter what the outcome of this race, though, the district may end up being a lost cause for Democrats. The district -- which includes a huge border with Mexico in southern Texas -- got redrawn during redistricting to add more Republican voters to it, which is worrisome for whichever Democrat wins tomorrow night.

If the Democrat who wins tomorrow loses in November, the other Democratic faction is going to say "we told you so," most likely. If Cuellar becomes the nominee and loses, then progressives will decry corporate conservatives within the party, but if Cisneros becomes the standard-bearer but then loses, then establishment Democrats will trot out the warning that progressives can't win general elections -- and caution that it's best to play it safe and run moderates instead. Of course, if either of them actually wins in November, then their faction will claim vindication and use it as a rallying cry for others like them to run for office in the future.

There are other races to watch tomorrow night (a total of four states will be voting), but these are the ones that will likely generate the most buzz from the pundits.

On Friday, that dodge ended with a most unlikely witness: her former campaign manager Robby Mook, who was supposed to be a witness helping the defense of her former campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann on a charge of lying to the FBI.

Instead, under cross-examination by Special Counsel John Durham's team, Mook was forced to concede two extraordinary facts.

First, the Clinton campaign wasn't "totally confident" about the accuracy of computer data suggesting Donald Trump had a secret communications channel to the Kremlin via Russia's Alfa Bank.

And second, Hillary Clinton herself personally approved spreading the story to the news media, despite the concerns about its accuracy.

Slowly over six years, the Russia collusion story has been exposed for what it was: a three-legged political dirty trick in which highly credible figures with deep law enforcement, intelligence and news media ties were paid by the Clinton campaign to flood the FBI, the CIA and the public with unproven allegations that Trump was secretly colluding with Russia to steal the election from Clinton.

The first leg of the collusion narrative was run by the former British spy Christopher Steele, who used his MI6 credentials and his prior ties to the FBI and high-ranking DOJ official Bruce Ohr to walk in his infamous dossier to U.S. law enforcement and intelligence in the summer of 2016. The FBI ultimately concluded Steele's dossier was riddled with Russian disinformation and disproved evidence.

The second leg was Sussmann, who crafted information from computer experts supporting Clinton into the tale of the Alfa Bank server back door. That narrative was flagged by Sussmann's team as unlikely even before he pitched it to the FBI, according to the indictment, and the theory was ultimately dismissed by the FBI and Russia Special Counsel Robert Mueller. "It wasn't true," Mueller testified to Congress in 2019.

The third leg of the dirty trick consisted of the efforts of federal bureaucrats inside the FBI, State Department and intelligence community — many of whom disliked Trump — who managed to deceive the FISA court, the Congress and the American public, often by using leaks to news media outlets to sustain a collusion story that had fallen apart within weeks of Steele's first approach.

Hillary didn't deserve to win in 2016..

And, with all the good that President Trump did in his 4 years in office, just imagine what this country could have accomplished if Democrats and Trump/America hating Republicans hadn't persecuted the President so hysterically with their Russia Collusion delusion..

Data on late-term abortions in the United States

In early 2019 several states enacted or proposed legislative changes to expand late-term abortions, renewing attention on this practice in the United States. Discussion of such policies has included some confusion regarding data bearing on the subject, due in part to misleading claims by the abortion lobby. What follows is a review of the best available data on such abortions, addressing nationwide incidence, variation over time and between states, and reasons for such abortions. Note that many of these topics have previously been well addressed by various publications of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, e.g. Prentice et al. (2019).

Based on information reported by Arizona, Florida, and Utah, probably 30-80% of late-term abortions are "elective" (non-health related), 20-60% are in cases of fetal health issues, and only 3-10% are in cases of maternal health.

As a teacher, my first obligation is to my students. But right now, my school is asking me to embrace “antiracism” training and pedagogy that I believe is deeply harmful to them and to any person who seeks to nurture the virtues of curiosity, empathy and understanding.

“Antiracist” training sounds righteous, but it is the opposite of truth in advertising. It requires teachers like myself to treat students differently on the basis of race. Furthermore, in order to maintain a united front for our students, teachers at Grace are directed to confine our doubts about this pedagogical framework to conversations with an in-house “Office of Community Engagement” for whom every significant objection leads to a foregone conclusion. Any doubting students are likewise “challenged” to reframe their views to conform to this orthodoxy.

The morally compromised status of “oppressor” is assigned to one group of students based on their immutable characteristics. In the meantime, dependency, resentment and moral superiority are cultivated in students considered “oppressed.”

All of this is done in the name of “equity,” but it is the opposite of fair. In reality, all of this reinforces the worst impulses we have as human beings: our tendency toward tribalism and sectarianism that a truly liberal education is meant to transcend.

Recently, I raised questions about this ideology at a mandatory, whites-only student and faculty Zoom meeting. (Such racially segregated sessions are now commonplace at my school.) It was a bait-and-switch “self-care” seminar that labelled “objectivity,” “individualism,” “fear of open conflict,” and even “a right to comfort” as characteristics of white supremacy. I doubted that these human attributes — many of them virtues reframed as vices — should be racialized in this way. In the Zoom chat, I also questioned whether one must define oneself in terms of a racial identity at all. My goal was to model for students that they should feel safe to question ideological assertions if they felt moved to do so.

Biden's confusing Taiwan-China remarks deal a blow to his credibility

A cryptic pledge to militarily protect Taiwan from China showcases a tendency to speak recklessly.

President Joe Biden turned heads on Monday when he pledged that the U.S. would militarily intervene against China if it invaded Taiwan, and signaled that his commitment to the island was stronger than to Ukraine. The confrontational statement marked a sharp departure from the U.S. policy of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan that has prevailed for decades.

But shortly after his remarks, Biden’s administration downplayed the statement, saying that the president had in fact not meant to signal a policy change, and that the usual U.S. posture on Taiwan remained intact.

Biden is marring the credibility of his own speech.

It’s becoming a familiar pattern: Biden makes a bold statement expressing a new degree of readiness for war with a rival or adversary like China or Russia, and then his own staff walks it back. It’s also becoming a troubling pattern — while domestic audiences can laugh off Biden’s gaffes and missteps, there is no guarantee foreign powers will give him the benefit of the doubt. Biden is marring the credibility of his own speech, and potentially unwittingly causing the U.S.’s opponents to come to the conclusion that the U.S. is more inclined toward war than it is.

Say that you're China and you want to invade Taiwan. Whether or not the US defends Taiwan will make all the difference in the world, no?

    For the record,

1- China has nukes but most of them are shorter range.

2- Nobody wins if we destroy civilization so the Chinese are no more likely to use their nukes as is Putin or Joe.

3- China has the fastest aging population in human history. One child policy means that there are simply not enough working Chinese left to support the largely non-productive elderly.

4- This means that soon the Chinese will not be able to hold up to their end of the you let us run things and everybody's standard of living will go up bargain. They won't be able to afford either guns or butter.
