Waiting For The Show To Start

[ Posted Thursday, June 9th, 2022 – 15:57 UTC ]

I am reminded, listening to all the hype and buzz building about tonight's House January 6th Select Committee's nationally-televised primetime hearing, of the lyrics of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Karn Evil 9" ("Come inside the show's about to start / Guaranteed to blow your head apart"). But maybe that's just me.

For once, though (progressive rock references aside), the show that we'll all see tonight may actually live up to its billing. Because for once, Democrats are approaching it with professional help in presenting their findings as a narrative. This is more important than you might think.

Many books have been written about Democrats' general failure to present their political positions in narrative form. It is a longstanding problem for them, which is why whenever they get a standout storyteller they tend to do a lot better (Barack Obama and Bill Clinton both immediately spring to mind). In today's Democratic Party, the best current politicians in terms of presenting their agenda as a narrative would likely be Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Katie Porter (and her whiteboard). They cut through all the nonsense and legalisms and politics and tell the story in plain and relatable terms that virtually any American family can not only immediately grasp, but usually agree with.

Democrats have tried to rise to the occasion and present their case as a narrative before, as they indeed attempted to do in both impeachments of Donald Trump (to varying degrees of success), and in the first public hearing the January 6th committee held (with four police officers who were attacked that day telling their own stories). At times it made for gripping television, and at other times not.

The January 6th committee is about to begin telling their complete story. What everyone's wondering as we wait for the show to start is how well the committee will present the storyline. This time there will be no countering nonsense or loud table-banging or conspiracy theories, since there will be no firebrand Republicans who have but one goal -- to be so rude and outrageous that they get themselves on the evening news. Kevin McCarthy tried to pack the committee with such hotheads, but Nancy Pelosi wisely declined. If the Republicans had been serious about participating, they would have allowed the nonpartisan commission idea to have become reality, but they shut that down. This left Pelosi with one option -- to create a House committee that she had full control over. This wasn't Pelosi's fault, it was Republicans who didn't want any investigation who forced her hand. So she made the decision not to allow people (many of whom may be implicated) such as Jim Jordan to spout nonsense and wave his arms around.

The absence of such grandstanders will be obvious, notable, and refreshing -- at least for anyone who has had to witness what I am referring to in any other House committee hearing. There will be two Republicans on the committee -- Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger -- and both can be expected to have prominent roles in the questioning. Cheney, in particular, should be very effective.

There will be another big change in tonight's hearing, one assumes. It was reported that the committee has engaged the services of James Goldston, former president of ABC News who ran both Good Morning America and Nightline, to advise them on their presentation. With any luck, this will mean the presentation will be both informative and dramatic, which will be crucial since this is merely the first of these hearings this month. If it is presented as a little mini-series that draws viewers back in for each episode with compelling television, that will help the committee get its message out to more people.

Viewership is the big question, of course, because it is a way to measure the possible impact of the hearings. This really goes beyond viewership, of course, because even those who don't sit through each hearing as it happens live may still find it hard to avoid the conversation it may spur, both in the political punditry world and in the realm of the late-night comedian. Some late-night shows have already announced they will do their own shows live after the hearings, which should reach a whole different audience.

Tonight's hearing will likely be an overview of sorts, presenting the entire narrative from beginning to end but in abbreviated fashion. Then they will likely spend some time focusing in closer on one aspect of the coup attempt, while leaving other aspects for future episodes. The committee will likely focus tonight on the right-wing groups involved in the conspiracy, from what they have been indicating. Also promised for opening night will be clips of both Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner's testimony (they won't appear live, just videos of their previous testimony). Nothing like a little star power to boost ratings.

The committee has a mountain of exhibits they could present. They've interviewed over 1,000 people, and gotten over 100,000 documents in response to their investigation. Some of these people will appear live tonight, some of the testimony will appear from recordings, and we have also been promised new never-before-seen videos of the day of the attack itself. With an experienced television pro advising them, hopefully the committee will present all of this in a narrative that will prove to be television worth watching, even for those only casually interested in politics.

The biggest theme the committee needs to stress, throughout all of this, is not only presenting the full and unexpurgated storyline of what happened in the buildup to the day of the attack, on the day of the attack, and in the aftermath; but also pointing out the fact that this effort never stopped. There are still people plotting to steal not the 2020 election, but the next elections America holds. They are doing so using 2020 as a template, mostly by trying to weaken or remove all the guardrails that prevented it from actually happening in 2020. This is an ongoing effort. And there's only one way to stop them from outright stealing the 2024 presidential race, and that is for Congress to update the rules dictating how the Electoral College acts and how Congress counts their votes. This cannot be allowed to happen again. Our democracy should not hang in the balance of whether the vice president obeys his oath to the Constitution or decides to go rogue. That is unacceptable. This is a very important case to make, and it is the answer to all the Republican whining about how: "nobody cares, we should all move on, nothing to see here."

Yes, America does deserve to know what happened in the worst attack on the U.S. Capitol since 1814, and the attempt to subvert our constitutional democracy and the peaceful transfer of presidential power. We deserve to know exactly how involved the former president was in this plot. We deserve to know exactly who did what, and who stood around watching television instead of doing anything. We are owed that, as a nation. But we are also owed the promise that it will never happen again, presented with a clear plan to avoid it even being contemplated.

Both of those are compelling narratives. They are good storylines to tell. And the committee was wise enough to enlist some professional help in how to present such a story to the public in a way that they will watch and keep coming back to see more. The more successful the committee is at storytelling tonight, the more people will tune in both this time and in the following weeks. To those that ask whether this will change any minds, I would reply: "Who cares?" It's not about changing minds, it is about telling the truth, the full truth, and nothing but the truth. Because that is the only way to defeat the Big Lie that the Republican Party has embraced at its very core. Our democracy hangs in the balance.

[Technical Footnote: For those who have no idea what I am referring to in that first paragraph, here are the lyrics (complete, to all the various parts) of the ELP song I cited. And as a bonus, in case you've never seen it, here is Part 1 and Part 2 of the most amazing performance by a high school musical group I have ever seen in my life. It comes from the Poteet High School Percussion Ensemble (from Mesquite, Texas), and both parts cover the entire Karn Evil 9 suite. The singer does an awesome job and the percussion is amazing. You're welcome.]

It seems like the purpose of this public hearing tonight is to demonstrate that Trump is at the centre of the conspiracy to overthrow a secure and fair presidential election. Seriously? Who is the committee hoping to convince?

Great video by some talented kids, brought forth some fond memories of the 1977 ELP tour that I was able to catch on 2 dates, both shows were identical down to the moment that Carl Palmer peeled off his t-shirt to the howls of the female attendees. There was an intermission and as the spotlights came back up there was an enormous "computer" on stage about 8 feet tall that was emitting the familiar "teedle-leedle-leedle" opener to part 2. Then a circular platform arose from under the stage with the 3 boys illuminated, quickly rushing to their positions and going into "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends" and blew the top off the place. Thanks for the memory jolt and for all your fine works.

So, Michale. Your Fox News has been forever claiming that the J6C hearings are a politically motivated witch hunt. I'm sure you watched this evening's First Hearing on Fox, with Fox fact checkers and analysis debunking the Committee's presentation, point by point. At last, expose this big nothingburger for what it is!

Won't you be a Dear and please summarize Fox News wisdom for Weigantia? I watched the MSNBC live stream myself.

They clearly took your advice Chris Weigant, and the TV pro(s) seem to have helped them proffer up a compelling, accessible, informative yet concise narrative of J6C. Should have, IMO, hired the Lincoln Project people, but whatever.

Of course there was Committee speechifying, but as prepared remarks go they weren't nearly as pontifical and grandstanding as is the norm. Production values were good-plus.

And we didn't have partisan sniping we had bipartisan behavior that's something else very much different from the usual committee behavior.

Benny Thompson opened (meh) and gave it to Rep. Liz "Definitely Not Switched at Birth" Cheney, who laid it down to her Repug enablers, Donald Trump will go, but your dishonor will remain. Ouch.

When establishing that everybody and their dog told Trump that there is no evidence of fraud they included video of testimony from Ivanka (who looked terrified. As though she was actually visualizing just how popular a pretty white thing like she would be among her fellow inmates.) ;D

And Jared looked like…looked like…er, like he was on Angel Dust? Never seen eyes so big on that boy!

[Not that I would have any personal experience with Angel Dust. Ahem.]

Anyways, it was interesting to observe their respective reactions to their video taped come to Jesus moment under Oath!;P Hard to imagine Tricia Nixon turning on her Daddy like that. *sigh*

    Biggest surprise reveal(s)?

*I think the meeting of the Path Keepers and the Proud Boys the night of January 5th combined with the fact that at least the Proud Boys were already walking to the Capitol before Trump even started speaking.

*This wasn't a rally that got out of hand. Not with scores (or hundreds?) of Patriots wearing tactical gear and just coincidentally carrying Bear spray with them and just happening to wait for Trump's mob to show up while they circled the Capitol gathering intel and breaching the Capitol in stack formation.

*Proud Boy membership tripled after Trump's December 19th "Will be wild!" Call to arms tweet. Go figure.

*That the 25th Amendment may have briefly invoked and in effect: Trump wouldn't call in the military while Pence did!?!

All in all, it was worth breaking out the Orville Reddenbacher for this one.

My biggest gripe about Republicans who pooh-pooh the j6c and claim that it's too partisan is that they're the ones most responsible for it being that way. If they had voted for it, there would have been a FULLY bipartisan special committee from both houses, with a mandatory end date last December!

if when that failed, Republicans had simply appointed some sane congresscritters who weren't also material witnesses, nearly half the committee would still be Republican and sympathetic to the former president.

I believe the Repugs deliberately scotched these various chances to participate in the J6C because they didn't want to be in the same hemisphere as any and all evidence such an investigation would reveal.

Some of them are co-conspirators, after all.

I mean, of course, besides the House Repugs who, having just fled for their lives from ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse then nonetheless voted to aid and comfort to #TrumpsBigLie.

Official Capitol Police timeline validates Trump administration's account, shows Democrats' fateful rejections of offers.

"Seems absolutely illogical," one official wrote about security posture hours before riot began.

An official timeline of the Jan. 6 tragedy assembled by Capitol Police shows that a Defense Department official reached out to a Capitol Police deputy chief, Sean Gallagher, on Jan. 2, 2021 to see if a request for troops was forthcoming, but the offer was quickly rejected after a consultation with then-Chief Steve Sund.

"Carol Corbin (DOD) texts USCP Deputy Chief Sean Gallagher, Protective Service Bureau, to determine whether USCP is considering a request for National Guard soldiers for January 6, 2021 event," the timeline reads in the lone entry listed for Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021.

The following morning, the timeline states, "Gallagher replies to DOD via text that a request for National Guard support not forthcoming at this time after consultation with COP Sund."

    Targeting the Supreme Court

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been sitting on a bill to protect the Justices’ families.

The arrest early Wednesday of an armed man outside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Maryland home is a depressing sign of the fanatical times. Violence in the name of politics now threatens the judiciary, and Washington’s remaining adults have an obligation to act with dispatch to protect the Justices, their families and the Court as an institution.

We warned after the leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion that a fanatic could attempt a violent act against one of the Justices, and here we are. The draft opinion suggested there is a 5-4 Court majority to overturn Roe, and it’s all too easy to imagine some 21st-century John Brown thinking he could prevent the ruling by assassinating a Justice. Now comes a dangerously close call.

Also notable is that the man outside the Kavanaugh home appears to have found the Justice’s address online, and the locations of some of the Justices’ homes were posted by the abortion activist group Ruth Sent Us. The Twitter reaction from Ruth Sent Us included skepticism that Mr. Roske was even a threat: “Oh, what was this ‘weapon’ the ‘California man’ had? If it was a gun or even a knife, police would say so.” They would, and they did.

    It's ironic..

More proof that facts are NOT what you are about, sadly.

Dems know the Jan. 6 hearings won't help in November. They're leaning in anyway.

House control is unlikely to hinge on the select committee's findings. And lawmakers who want to stop Donald Trump in 2024 are thinking bigger.

And yet, *FACTS* are what I am ALL about...

Democrats know that there is simply no chance in hell they are going to keep Congress after the mid-terms..

Ergo, the ONLY reason to continue the 6JC is to further their PTDS on the slim-to-none hope that it may influence President Trump's decision to run in 2024..

Ultimately, the events last night amounted to a damp squib. The chain of claims that supposedly link Donald Trump to the actions of moronic hooligans is tendentious. The case is based on assertions that Trump told “lies” about matters of opinion, and that he did not listen to the advice of some of his aides. Trump called for a rally which turned into a riot; therefore, Trump caused a riot. Some of the mob imagined that they could prevent the transfer of power; therefore, the whole thing was an attempted coup.

This kind of dramatisation has become all too typical of the Democrats, but it is clear that voters have grown tired of it. Until they can give up the Trump ghost and focus on issues that actually matter to voters — cost of living, inflation, and crime — the party will face electoral annihilation in 2022 and beyond.

No. I would support elective where feasible but not mandatory. One of the big problems with guns is the urban/rural divide. Guns are not as useful and a much greater liability in an urban environment and ownership is much lower. I'm down to a single firearm mainly because I lived in San Francisco for a while and the nearest outdoor range is a good hour drive. I don't think there is even a indoor pistol range in the city limits. That makes gun safety classes where shooting a real gun as part of the class not feasible. I would expect the same in many large cities.

    I am definitely awesome.

Another person who was actually a soldier in the United States Army seeming to agree that an "assault rifle" doesn't exist. Wow. :)

    ~ Kick

Yep.. That's because SOLDIERS actually know the facts regarding firearm nomenclature and such..

You seem eager to prove beyond doubt you weren't actually a real SOLDIER, and to that I respond: "Proceed, governor."

Oh, sure.. You can surely find ignorant types who throw the term "assault rifle" around here or there.. Thanks to the media/political hype, "assault rifle" has become something of a popular political slogan, as MC put it so damn well..

You seem eager to prove beyond doubt you weren't actually a real SOLDIER because if you were, you'd obviously already know that "assault rifle" is an Army term that goes way (way) back and wasn't and isn't considered political by real SOLDIERS trained to use them.

But anyone who uses the term in conjunction with a serious discussion on firearms is simply showing the world how actually ignorant they are when it comes to firearms..

So you're saying you consider your repetitive incorrect statements regarding the subject to be a "serious discussion on firearms." I'm telling you for a FACT that those millions of SOLDIERS who've trained to use multiple different types of assault rifles would definitely label you as the "actually ignorant" (your term) "political hype" (also your term).

Or they are pushing a political agenda...

One would obviously be pushing a "political agenda" to keep claiming over and over repeatedly that there's no such thing as an "assault rifle."

Department of the Army Operator's Manual for AK-47 Assault Rifle

Anyone telling you that there's no such thing as an assault rifle is definitely exercising the false regurgitation of political spew. If the very political pro-gun nuts of the NRA are aware of the existence of a true assault rifle, I'd say it definitely wouldn't hurt a thing for somebody who claims otherwise to take the time to educate themselves regarding the FACTS.

No one reading this should confuse me explaining the existence of an assault rifle with the utter nonsensical notion that I'm making the claim that an AR-15 meets the definition; it definitely does not. :)

    Elaborate as you see fit...

NO. First and foremost, there is not enough information on the subject to be more than a 20 hour class…and that is really stretching out the class time, honestly!

Two, we already provide this info to students; it’s called ROTC.

OK... We have GOT to do something about Captain Pike's hair..

He looks like an older version of Johnny Bravo....

OMG, we are definitely in agreement on this! Incredible series thus far. If you haven’t watched this weeks Ready Room, you are going to want to as it says a lot about all the new shows.

    Serious question here..

I was on the ROTC rifle team in my high school.. circa 1980 (DAWN OF THE NEW DECADE)...

    Is ROTC still being offer'ed???

I would have thought with the Left Wing slant of education and the Democrat hate of the military, that it would have gone the way of the SROs...

In high school it's JROTC. In college, it's ROTC. :)

    Michale,

The most important fact in support of Trump being an America hater is how he always pits one group of Americans (his supporters) against all other Americans (everyone else).

This tells me that he doesn't love his country. He only "loves" his fellow countrymen and women if they agree with him and support him and tell him how wonderful he is and how awful everyone else is.

He didn't do this JUST as part of his campaign for the presidency or JUST when he was president. He is divisive to the extreme ALL THE TIME.

Did you perchance inadvertently omit Trump's love of money... particularly his love of OPM (other people's money) and his love of screwing them out of it?

Not sure what you are suggesting seeing how SROs are still in schools all over the country. JROTC is still offered in some school systems around the country.
