Democratic National Convention (Day Four)

[ Posted Friday, August 23rd, 2024 – 17:30 UTC ]

[Editorial Note: We do apologize for not hewing to our usual Friday format here today, but we decided at the start of the week to write our round-up reviews of each night of the Democratic National Convention on the following day. Our usual Friday Talking Points will resume next week, but today we've got to go over the final night of the big Democratic wingding in Chicago.]

Over its first three days, the Democratic National Convention kept building on one overriding theme: joy. Or, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained to Stephen Colbert last night, for Democrats it was "the rebirth of hope." I almost expected Beethoven's Ode To Joy to be played at some point, but I guess the various DJs didn't have a copy. A far different Alex -- the main character in A Clockwork Orange -- would have been seriously disappointed by this omission, since (as he put it) it would have added: "all the banging and creeching about Joy Joy Joy Joy." The lack of "Ludwig Van" aside, though, it certainly was a joyful event for the first three nights.

Last night, however, was best summed up by Kamala Harris (when she was quieting the crowd before her speech): "Let's get to business." It was a more somber and sober night, with an emphasis on national security, crime and punishment, gun control, veterans, and Republicans urging other Republicans to vote Democratic this time around. That's not to say there weren't joyful moments (there were!), but the overall mood seemed more serious in general. In fact, the lineup for last night was nowhere near as star-studded as the first three nights have been, which might have been intentional (they didn't want anything to overshadow Harris's acceptance speech, maybe?). In this vein, disappointing millions, neither Beyoncé nor Taylor Swift showed up.

The speech Harris gave was calculated to allow her to "look presidential," which sounds rather crass but in fact is a big test for any presidential candidate to pass. Harris easily cleared that bar last night. She even did an admirable job in walking the tightrope with her remarks on the situation in Gaza and Israel. Listening to her, it was pretty easy to picture her in the Oval Office, to put all this another way.

The earlier, non-primetime segment of the show had a few early couch gags (so to speak). Elizabeth Warren, for some reason relegated to a too-early speaking slot, said of Donald Trump and JD Vance: "I wouldn't trust those guys to move my couch!" (Nudge, nudge.) Representative Jason Crow, speaking about military service, followed up with: "Trust me, I know a couch commando when I see one." (Wink, wink.)

Representative Pat Ryan, whose House district includes West Point (his alma mater), spoke of the school's code of ethics, which forbids lying, stealing, and cheating. He then turned to Trump, who "has violated every word in that code -- a serial liar, cheater, thief who looked soldiers in the eye, then turned around and called fallen heroes 'suckers' and 'losers'." He wasn't the only one to remind the crowd of these words, as many spoke of their support for the military.

Reverend Al Sharpton then spoke and introduced four of the Central Park Five, who were wrongly accused, convicted, and imprisoned for a crime they did not commit. This, of course, was Trump's first foray into politics, when he took out full-page newspaper ads calling for them to face the death penalty. Yusef Salaam, one of the Five, has since moved on to become a New York City councilman. He said of Trump: "He wanted us dead." He also ended with the (quite literal, for them) words: "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last."

We also heard from a sex trafficking survivor and a woman who was denied an abortion in Florida. This was all to set the stage for Kamala Harris, who (of course) worked as a prosecutor, jailing sex criminals and others.

The real show didn't get rolling until 8:00 P.M. Eastern, with the crowd fired up just before with a drumline and a little DJ dance party. Tim Walz was (adorably) seen taking selfies with his kids. The Chicks (formerly of Dixie) sang the national anthem (I've seen better, but then again I've seen worse). Kerry Washington was tonight's celebrity emcee, for some reason.

Speaking of adorable moments, we got the best one of the entire convention last night, when Kamala Harris's two very young nieces taught the crowd how to pronounce their Auntie's name: "First you say 'comma,' like a comma in a sentence," said one, and the other finished with: "Then you say 'la,' like [singsong voice]: la la la, la la." They got the crowd to roar it back at them, which (like I said) was absolutely unequalled in cuteness and adorability. Off the charts! And this heartwarming exercise now forever removes the excuse for anyone anywhere not to get it right ever again, by the way.

Comedian D.L. Hughley spoke, and apologized for saying some harsh things last month when Democrats were pressuring Joe Biden to drop out of the race. He offered up his full support for Harris and got a few zingers off, the most memorable of which was: "I guess Donald Trump will finally know what it's like when you get left for a younger woman!"

We then returned to seriousness, starting with the sheriff of the county in Michigan which contains Flint, who memorably decided to walk with protesters following the murder of George Floyd, rather than try to stop the protests.

Representative Lucy Bath, who lost a son to gun violence, then introduced other relatives who had lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook and Uvalde (and other) gun massacres, which was the somberest moment of the night. At the end, the crowd broke out into a chant of: "Not one more!"

This was the perfect introduction for Gabby Giffords, survivor of her own assassination attempt. She was accompanied by her husband, Senator Mark Kelly, who didn't speak while she did, but merely supported his wife. We got a video about gun violence. Pink then performed "What About Us," joined by her own daughter on stage.

Mark Kelly then returned to give his own speech. He was one of the ones on the shortlist for Harris's running mate, but even though he may have been able to guarantee his home state of Arizona for the ticket, you could see that Harris made a better choice. Kelly is no slouch as a politician, mind you, but his oratory style lacks a certain sparkle.

From gun violence we moved on to national security. Leon Panetta, who has held multiple high-ranking national security positions in various Democratic administrations, reminded everyone that America's military strength is of paramount importance in the world -- like that time he was in charge of the mission to take out Osama Bin Laden, for instance. Panetta also ripped into Trump for the "losers" and "suckers" comments.

Ruben Gallego, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Arizona (for Kyrsten Sinema's seat), also spoke of the importance of the military and called all the other Democratic politicians who had served onto the stage with him. Many up-and-coming Senate hopefuls were featured throughout the entire convention, for good reason -- to give them the benefit of a national stage to test out their oratorial chops. Gallego did pretty well, playing to his home state when he denounced Trump's rudeness towards one of their own: "John McCain was an American hero, show some respect!"

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer followed, and the night moved on from the military focus. Whitmer was another Democrat on the veep shortlist (and my personal favorite), but having a ticket with two women on it might have been a bridge too far for America, I do realize that. Whitmer certainly equals Tim Walz for Midwestern sensibility, as well as achieving all kinds of amazing things as governor (after flipping control of the legislature to Democrats for the first time in decades). As she put it, she campaigned on "GSD -- getting (stuff) done!" She had a few snarky things to say about Trump, who she reminded us "called me 'that woman from Michigan'" -- before flicking an imaginary piece of lint off her shoulder. Best sight gag of the convention? It was certainly a contender (although Barack Obama's "crowd size" hand movements probably win that award). She didn't get to use the normal S-word she uses, but she did close by asking the crowd: "Why wouldn't we choose the leader who is tough, tested, and a total badass?"

Eva Longoria then proceeded to teach the crowd some bad "Spanglish," by changing the chant: "Sí se puede" ("Yes, we can") to her new take on it: "She say puede," or... um... "She say can"?

We then moved on to the "let's try to convince some more Never-Trumper Republicans to vote for us!" part of the program. This sort of crossover appearance at the rival party's convention isn't completely out of the ordinary (remember Joe Lieberman?), but there were rather a lot of Republicans echoing the same message during this convention, that's for sure.

Kinzinger zeroed in on a prevailing feeling among Republicans, to reassure them:

I've learned something about the Democratic Party, and I want to let me fellow Republicans in on the secret: The Democrats are as patriotic as us. They love this country just as much as we do. And they are eager to defend American values at home and abroad as we conservatives have ever been.... Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong. He is a small man pretending to be big. He is a faithless man pretending to be righteous. He's a perpetrator who can't stop playing the victim.... Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party.... How can a party claim to be patriotic and follow a man who tried to overthrow the results of a free and fair election?

This is the strongest I've ever heard this case be made, personally. Donald Trump is fond of accusing all Democrats of "hating America," and they really need to push back on that offensive idea more often.

After a short speech by Kamala Harris's sister and then an introduction from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (another contender for the veep slot, but one like Gretchen Whitmer who took his own name out of the running), we finally got to the main event -- early! Well, it was 10:30 P.M. (Eastern) by the time Vice President Kamala Harris walked onto the stage, but that put most of her speech in primetime -- something the convention hadn't quite managed the other three nights.

Harris, of course, got an enormous standing ovation, and chants of "U... S...A!" broke out among the crowd. It took quite a while for her to get them to settle down, despite repeating: "Thank you, thank you, thank you" for what seemed like whole minutes at a time. But finally it was time to "get down to business."

Well, not quite. Harris began by thanking her husband and wishing him: "Happy anniversary, Dougie!"

Then she got down to business. She started with her childhood and upbringing, delighting music fans with a mention of "Aretha, Coltrane, and Miles" being played by her mom when she was a kid. She told the story of her best friend confiding in her that her stepfather was molesting her at home, and how the Harris family welcomed the girl into their home, to protect her. This was a life-changing event for Harris, who decided to become a prosecutor (to put sex offenders in prison).

To roaring applause, Harris then spoke the words: "I accept your nomination to be president of the United States of America."

Harris then tossed down a familiar (and necessary) marker:

With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a new way forward, not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans. I know there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know: I promise to be a president for all Americans.

She followed this up with a promise to uphold the nation's principles, "You can always trust me to put country above party and self, to hold sacred America's fundamental principles, from the rule of law to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power." This got a huge hand from the audience, for obvious reasons.

She didn't hold back in her criticism of Trump:

In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences -- the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. Consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election.

Harris pointed out that Trump "tried to throw away your votes," and ran down his rap sheet (in case anyone had forgotten). She then ran down the dangers of what Trump wanted to do in a second term in office, and then warned that the Supreme Court had just granted all presidents kinglike powers of immunity, asking us to "just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails!"

Harris, of course, leaned in to all the horrors women have faced in red states since the fall of Roe v. Wade. After listing a few of them, she got off one of the best lines of the night for her:

This is what's happening in our country because of Donald Trump. And understand, he is not done. As a part of his agenda, he and his allies would limit access to birth control, ban medication abortion and enact a nationwide abortion ban, with or without Congress.

And get this. Get this. He plans to create a national anti-abortion coordinator, and force states to report on women's miscarriages and abortions. Simply put, they are out of their minds. And one must ask -- one must ask, why exactly is it that they don't trust women? Well, we trust women. We trust women.

And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, as president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.

I can see: "They are out of their minds!" becoming a go-to campaign slogan, personally, as it covers a wider universe than just their stance on abortion rights.

Harris moved on to other freedoms which were at risk if Trump is elected, from gay marriage to voting rights. She promised to sign the bipartisan border bill negotiated in the Senate (before Trump killed it), and then stood up for the troops and the military in general.

The hardest needle Harris had to thread was on the situation in Gaza and Israel, but she did a much better job of it than most Democrats, getting loud applause from different groups in the crowd for different parts of the following passage:

With respect to the war in Gaza, President Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the time to get a hostage deal and a cease-fire deal done.

And let me be clear. And let me be clear. I will always stand up for Israel's right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on October seventh, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.

At the same time, what has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. Desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking.

President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom and self-determination.

She pointed out that dictators around the world are "rooting for Trump" for one simple reason -- they all find him "easy to manipulate with flattery and favors."

She then began her closing remarks, beginning with: "Fellow Americans, I love my country with all my heart. Everywhere I go, in everyone I meet, I see a nation that is ready to move forward. Ready for the next step in the incredible journey that is America."

She finished on a high note:

It is now our turn to do what generations before us have done, guided by optimism and faith, to fight for this country we love, to fight for the ideals we cherish and to uphold the awesome responsibility that comes with the greatest privilege on Earth: the privilege and pride of being an American. So let's get out there, let's fight for it. Let's get out there, let's vote for it, and together, let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told!

In a word, Kamala Harris looked presidential last night. There's a reason Democrats have felt a reawakening of hope, and it is because Kamala Harris has an excellent chance of beating Donald Trump. Now that the convention is over, she'll have to work hard to win over voters in the next two months. But she's got a solid shot of doing this, and last night showed American why.

WOW... I think I just saw a tumbleweed or two roll by here in Weigantia..

Apparently, all the "Hope" & "Joy" from the DNC didn't make it's way to Weigantia, eh?? :D

As is my tradition, I bowed out of Weigantia during the convention days to let ya'all enjoy some unfettered fantasies of President Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris.. I guess I shouldn't have bothered since things seem pretty dismal and grey and depressing around here..

It's almost redundant to bring ya'all back down to earth with the facts and reality, since ya'all appear to have realized that it will be President Trump returning to the Oval Office in Jan of 2025...

But... Since I am here anyways and since you can NEVER have TOO MUCH facts and reality..??? Why not.. :D

Of course, the big news is that former Democrat, now President Trump supporter Robert F. Kennedy, a DIRECT relative of THE Kennedys has left the campaign and all of his voters are now President Trump voters. :D

The question that some druggie luser inmate always asked 'where is President Trump going to get all the extra votes to win??' has now been answered.. :D

Demon'rats really scroo'ed themselves over when they scroo'ed over RFK.. But this wasn't the first time that Demon'rats failed to consider the consequences of their actions. A 6-3 Conservative SCOTUS and a President Trump that has ABSOLUTE IMMUNITY are 2 of the most recent instances of Demon-rats failing to consider consequences and taking a hammer to their own wee-wees.

What IS it about Demon'rats that they see their own wee-wees in there hands that they HAVE to smash them?? :eyeroll:

And what is even MORE hilarious!!!

RFK, with just a few sentences of his now famous I AM MAGA speech, erased **ALL** of the gains that Demon'rats got from their HOPE & JOY convention!!!!

Ya can't make this stuff up, people!! It's TOO perfect!!!!

    BBBBBWWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Did ya'all catch Bitter Basement Biden's speech at the DNC?? Boy was he PO'ed!! :D

It's really hilarious when ya'all think about it, eh??

Demon'rats, the self-described "Defenders Of Democracy" coronated Basement Biden and forced all other contenders out of a democratic race....

"Biden's the ONLY one who could defeat Trump!" they said.. "Biden is awesome!!!" they said..

And when we all saw senile dementia-riddled Basement Biden at his FIRST debate???

Demon'rats couldn't push Basement Biden out of the race fast enough!! :D

President Trump **DESTROYED** Basement Biden in a SINGLE DEBATE!!

    BBBBBBWWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So, what did Demon'rats turn around and do??

They doubled-down on their complete and utter stoopidity and coronated a DIFFERENT Demon'rat.. A Demon'rat that had ***LOWER NUMBERS THAN BASEMENT BIDEN***!!!!

    BBBBWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So, the vaunted claim that Demon'rats are the "Defenders Of Democracy" has been completely and utterly refuted and proven false..

    BY DEMON'RATS THEMSELVES!!!!

    BBBBBBWWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Of course, Demon'rats pushed this whole "JOY" thing and, coupled with a fawning press honeymoon, got Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris' numbers up a tad..

Then along came NO-BALLZ Walz who dragged down the ticket with his stolen valor and all his BS military lies and his support of Demon'rat BLM and AntiFa destroying NO-BALLZ's cities..

    But here's the kicker..

Headboard Harris and NO-BALLZ WALZ are DEATHLY afraid of the press... They realize that the honeymoon is over and NOW Headboard & NO-BALLZ have to actually put forth some actual and real policy statements..

Oh, Headboard & NO-BALLZ have dabbled a bit.

They stole one policy idea from President Trump and of course it was awesome because it came from President Trump.. They also put forth a policy idea of PRICE CONTROLS which every serious economist from the Right AND the Left utterly decimated their plan as a joke and not a serious plan..

And the betting markets?? Well, Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris & NO-BALLZ Walz DID enjoy a brief surge in the betting markets..

But that changed. President Trump is now back on top in the betting markets..

And get this.. President Trump took back the lead DURING the Demon'rat JOY and HOPE fest convention!!!

    BBBBBWWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

How is THAT for karma, eh!??

Basically, history is repeating itself.. Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris' first POTUS campaign started with a sizzle and ended in a MAJOR crash and burn...

And the same thing is happening now..

Once the shiny HOPE & JOY wore off, American voters are seeing exactly why Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris has lower numbers than senile dementia riddled Basement Biden..

It's no wonder that Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris & NO-BALLZ Walz are afraid to have an actual press conference or interview..

They simply have NOTHING to offer Americans except the same old failed policies of senile dementia-riddled Basement Biden and the Demon'rats who have run this country into the ground..

One could almost feel sorry for Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris and the Demon'rats.. If they haven't done their best to ruin this great country that is...

It's gonna be a FUN election sprint.. And I'll be here to guide ya'all along the whole way until President Trump returns to the Oval Office in Jan of 2025.. :D

    It's gonna be a HOOT!!! :D

"Ya know what, wait.. It IS funny... It's a HOOT that you people don't seem to get this!!"

I mean, what red-blooded patriotic American COULDN'T vote for an ASTRONAUT!!??

And Shapiro?? If Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris had picked Shapiro, she would have secured the Jewish vote..

But, by picking Tampon Tim NO-BALLZ Walz, Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris picked the WORST possible candidate to help her own campaign..

NO AMERICAN, at least no American who actually loves this country, is going to vote for a guy who demanded that tampons be placed in BOYS bathrooms at schools and who is BFF with a Hamas Terrorist and who, like a coward, ran away from his unit when they were being deployed to a war zone.. Don't even HAVE to mention how NO-BALLZ let Demon'Rat BLM and AntiFa destroy Minneapolis...

Honestly, Token DEI-Hire Headboard Harris totally scroo'ed over her entire campaign by picking Tampon Tim NO-BALLZ Walz...

    Indeed.

Here's what jumped out at me in this piece,

"Biden’s age was clearly a huge impediment to his reelection chances, but the issue that has done the most to dictate the progress of this election is inflation, how much stuff costs, which is as material and concrete and visceral as political issues get. The fact that it’s slowed down so much recently makes Democratic victory possible. That presidents can’t control inflation just speaks to the unfortunate irrationality that underlies the system. What I can tell you for sure is that the low information Pennsylvania retirees who will determine the outcome of the election won’t vote based on who’s brat."

That the issue of inflation is what has done the most to dictate how this presidential election will shake out has quite a lot to do with how inadequately Dems have messaged on the economy - today and for as long as I have been following US politics. :(

It seems that the American voters have gotten more sophisticated about inflation. Enough of them knew it was not Biden’s fault that the entire planet suffered this post-Covid supply chain related inflation. The proof is in the red tsunami that wasn’t in 2022. It was the best midterm performance in these circumstances since…Ronald Reagan.

I still think the Dems are saving their best economy related messaging for September when people start paying attention to politics.

    What "MAGA" really means

The phrase has troubled liberals who think it is a call for a return to an America before civil rights, gay rights, and women's rights. But I have a more generous interpretation, one that is truer to my experience of Donald Trump as he is today. "Make America Great Again" recalls a nation brimming with vitality, with a can-do spirit, with hope and a belief in itself.

It was an America that was beginning to confront its darker shadows, could acknowledge the injustice in its past and present, yet at the same time could celebrate its successes. It was a nation of broad prosperity, the world's most vibrant middle class, and a idealistic belief (though not consistently applied) in freedom, justice, and democracy.

It was a nation that led the world in innovation, productivity, and technology. And it was the healthiest country in the world. I have talked to many Trump supporters. I have talked with his inner circle. I have talked to the man himself.

This is the America they want to restore.

A federal judge cleared two former Louisville police officers of felony charges in connection to Breonna Taylor's fatal shooting and instead faulted Taylor's boyfriend for her death.

In an order Thursday, U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson dropped felony "deprivation of rights under the color of law" charges against former Louisville Police Detective Joshua Jaynes and former Sgt. Kyle Meany.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland first announced federal charges against Jaynes and Meany in August 2022 during a high-profile visit to Louisville. Garland accused Jaynes and Meany, who were not present during the fatal 2020 police raid of Taylor's apartment, of knowing they had falsified part of the warrant and put the 26-year-old Black woman in a dangerous situation by sending armed officers to her door.

I think I've said it here before, but if so I'll say it again: inflation per se doesn't do anything.

Imagine two timelines. In one, all is as we observe it to be in our world, to within the statistical error margins of our observations. In the other, a typo in an obscure law from 1997, combined with an even more obscure SCOTUS ruling from sixteen years earlier on how to resolve conflicting laws, means that the actual legal currency of the United States is something called the "dolalr", which was the same as the dollar at the time the law took effect, but has lost value relative to the dollar at exactly five per cent per annum ever since.

Inflation has been higher in that timeline by a whole five percentage points, for over twenty years.

And the effects of that additional inflation are so dire that we literally can't know whether or not that's the timeline we're in.

Inflation causes problems because some nominal prices don't change while others do. In the 5%-extra-inflation timeline, all the dolalr prices change by that extra 5%, not just some.

Walz faces new accusation of misrepresenting himself in blistering unearthed letter

    'Remove any reference'

Walz received a blistering letter from the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce's chief in 2006

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is facing another accusation of misrepresenting his background after a Nebraska Chamber of Commerce letter from 2006 resurfaced amid Walz's campaign for vice president.

When Walz first ran for Congress in Minnesota, he touted on his campaign website that he received an award from the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce in 1993 for his work with the business community, according to a 2006 article from the Post Bulletin.

He never received such an award, however, which was outlined to him in a blistering letter from the then-president of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, Barry L. Kennedy.

"We researched this matter and can confirm that you have not been the recipient of any award from the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce," the letter addressed to Walz on Nov. 1, 2006, reads.

"I am not going to draw a conclusion about your intentions by including this line in your biography. However, we respectfully request that you remove any reference to our organization as it could be considered an endorsement of your candidacy. It should be pointed out, however, that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has endorsed your opponent, Congressman Gil Gutknecht, for his support of small business issues," Kennedy continued.

Tampon Tim NO-BALLZ Walz just CAN'T HELP but LIE about his background..

People are outraged that stuff is so expensive, even though they're not actually any worse off. Then, inflation slows. Over the next few years, that kind of bread goes up to $2.60 a loaf and the pay for that job goes up to $52k/year. Then the timeline splits. If there's a Democratic president, people are even more outraged that bread didn't go back down to $2.00 where it belongs. If there's a Republican president, people are outraged that foreigners exist (or gay people, or whoever), but they're happy that inflation is low and they don't think about the possibility that bread ever cost $2.00 (although they'll remember as soon as they become aware of the existence of a Democratic candidate).

Well, the Dems could try to talk about the economy by laying out the long history of Republican administrations leaving economic messes on the order of magnitude of the Augean Stables for Democratic administrations to clean up.

They could talk about how Republicans keep clinging to the fantasy that giving expensive tax breaks to the millionaire and billionaire class (who don't need it and largely haven't asked for it) do not trickle down to benefit the rest of the country economically.

They could talk about the Republican fantasy that these tax cuts for the very rich can be paid for by cutting government spending.

They could talk about how reducing government regulations that protect people - financially and otherwise - benefits no one but the very rich.

They could talk about the Democratic versus Republican record on job creation and other economic indicators.

And, Dems don't have to get into the weeds on any of this - just talk about it in ways that just make a lot of sense. And repeat it until it sinks in.

The last person I heard anyone in public service talk about economic policy like this was when Tim Geithner would speak about these issues as treasury secretary in the Obama administration. And, even then, he was the only one who made the case for Democrats using effective arguments. Unfortunately, for reasons that would take up a whole other blog post, he was the wrong messenger.

Neither one seems likely to move people who implicitly believe that the president goes around in a flying miniature sleigh pulled by eight tiny federal-reserve governors and visits every gas station in the world to change all the gas prices simultaneously at midnight, because they just haven't thought about it. You would need something like the we're-respectable vibes that a lot of Republicans used to have, back when the Solid South was solidly Democratic, when Republicans were trying to keep the New Deal from looking too successful.

Only the Republicans haven't been respectable like that in ages. The closest they've come in my lifetime is Mitt (R - Money). So that's not it any more.

Sounds to me like Bobby is both butthurt as well as ignorant. Butthurt Bobby ended his bid for the Democratic nomination for president on October 9, 2023, when he struggled mightily to gain any sort of traction whatsoever during the Democratic primaries.

As for Donald Trump, he tried to remain in power by "weaponizing government agencies" to stop the peaceful transfer of power when he lost the 2020 election and is now under multiple criminal indictments for the illegal attempt. Trump attempted "disenfranchising American voters" in multiple states by the filing of illegal certificates of ascertainment swearing that Trump had won multiple states which he obviously did not.

Trump also repeatedly refused to show up to any of the multiple primary debates against any of his multiple opponents, and he was chosen by Republicans... but only the gullible ones. Trump took over the Republican National Committee by installing his own family members and further silenced anyone not interested in the Trump takeover of the Republican Party.

Almost everything with Trumplicans and MAGAts is pure projection, but the troll's newfound love for a Democrat is truly heartwarming... and demonstrably hysterical.

If Democrats could have been moved by the likes of anti-vaxxer, conspiracy theorist "liberal lunatic" (Trump's term, not mine) Bobby Kennedy,Jr., there'd have been no need for him to go full "rock bottom" and sell his political soul to Trump.
