A Very Unusual Campaign Season

[ Posted Monday, October 28th, 2024 – 16:48 UTC ]

The 2024 presidential campaign has been an unusual one in a number of respects. The candidates from both major political parties got their nominations in rather odd ways, and while the outcome is going to be close, the winner will set some sort of political precedent in modern American politics for the way this campaign has unfolded.

First, Donald Trump. Trump, true to his political persona, broke a longstanding tradition that presidential losers gracefully withdraw from presidential politics. It has long been a rule of thumb that anyone who failed to win a presidential election -- even someone who had previously won the White House once already -- was then considered damaged goods, and therefore the party would obviously have a much better chance the next time around by nominating a fresh face. Which makes a whole lot of sense, really. Only once in American history has a president made a comeback and won a second non-consecutive term (Grover Cleveland), and that happened in the late 19th century. If Trump wins, he will go down in history as only the second to achieve this rather unusual feat.

Trump, however, never conceded his 2020 loss and insists to this day he somehow "won" that election, despite offering no proof that the Democrats "stole" it from him. His planetary-sized ego simply could not accept the loss. So he began his third run for the presidency very early on in the cycle. A big factor in this may also be the fact that he started getting indicted both at the state and federal level, for things he did both as president as well as before and after his presidency. If Trump wins, he will be able to make many (but not all) of his legal problems go away -- which is a pretty big enticement to run, you've got to admit.

Trump won the Republican nomination handily, without even bothering to launch much of a campaign effort. He ignored all the GOP primary debates, because he had no real need to show up -- he had such a commanding lead in the polls among Republicans that it simply didn't matter what any of his GOP challengers had to say about him. They all squabbled with each other instead, which only served to weaken the whole field. By the time a single challenger to Trump had emerged from the pack, the race was all but over. Trump's hold on the party's base voters was so strong that nobody else ever really had a chance -- which is incredibly unusual, seeing as how Trump had already lost one presidential election. But his base voters believed (and still believed) Trump's Big Lie about the election being stolen, so to them he wasn't a loser, but instead a victim of a nefarious Democratic plot.

The Democratic campaign has been even more unusual, in that it is closer to a parliamentary-style campaign than an American presidential election. [Editorial note: I initially wrote "European-style campaign," but this does a disservice to the rest of the world's democracies, most of which are also parliamentary and share the same method of holding elections.]

The first fact that makes me say this is that Kamala Harris only had a little over 100 days in which to campaign. The second is the manner in which she secured the Democratic nomination. Both are beyond unusual, they are in fact unprecedented in modern times. Harris won no primaries -- she didn't even run in any of them. She was selected by party leaders -- something akin to the fabled "smoke-filled back rooms" of yore. She did an exemplary job of this, by the way, which precluded a nasty intraparty battle for who would take President Joe Biden's place on the ticket, when he bowed out of the race. The entire Democratic Party fell into line behind Harris with remarkable speed -- her ascension to "presumed nominee" took mere hours, not days. But as I mentioned, this is much more of a feature of parliamentary politics, where in other countries the parties select the candidates, not the voters.

You can't draw clear parallels, since the parliamentary system has a lot of other differences from the American system (their voters don't even get to directly vote for their prime minister, for example). But what has happened on the Democratic side is a lot closer to an election in, say, Ireland or Canada than it is to the normal American process. In fact, in most parliamentary systems, 100-plus days would be considered a very long campaign, not an incredibly foreshortened one.

America does occasionally have what (to us) seems like "snap elections" (again, in a parliamentary system, "snap elections" can happen within weeks -- not months). This is generally due to an office suddenly becoming vacant for some reason (death, resignation, or recall). California had a very unusual gubernatorial election a while back, in 2003. The entire election, from beginning to end, was 76 days long. Both the recall itself and possible successors were on the same ballot, meaning you had to vote whether to keep the current governor (Gray Davis) in office at the same time you also cast a vote for who should replace him if the recall was successful. It was a total free-for-all, with 135 candidates on the ballot. Everyone under the sun ran, from a comedian (Gallagher) to actors (Gary Coleman, Arnold Schwarzenegger) to political gadflies (Arianna Huffington) to a porn star (Mary Carey) to a porn mogul (Larry Flynt), as well as a handful of actual politicians. The recall was successful, and the sitting lieutenant governor (Cruz Bustamante) was beaten by Schwarzenegger. For the record, Huffington came in fifth, Flynt came in seventh, Coleman came in eighth, and Carey came in tenth. But although the circus-like collection of candidates was amusing, the strangest thing about the election was the fact that it was only 76 days long -- not much in the way of time to campaign.

But we've never had such a compact campaign for president in modern times. And we haven't had a major-party candidate who didn't emerge from the primary process pretty much since the primaries became the usual way nominations were secured (which happened in the 1970s). If Harris wins, it will be the most unusual path a president has taken to the Oval Office since Gerald Ford (who was never even elected vice president, having been merely appointed to the job).

What this all means is that whichever party loses next week will doubtlessly undergo some Monday-morning quarterbacking. If Trump loses, all the "never-Trumper" Republicans will be screaming: "We told you so!" The wisdom of going with a proven loser will be questioned, at least to some degree. Of course, everyone fully expects that if Trump loses he will once again trot out his Big Lie and claim the whole thing was stolen from him -- that is par for Trump's course. And it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he even attempted to launch a 2028 campaign immediately afterwards. This will allow him to continue raising money that can go to his legal defense, and it will allow him to continue to claim that the whole thing is a political "witch hunt" designed to take down the leading opposition candidate. But one would have to think that fewer Republicans would be willing to jump on board the "Trump 2028" train if he has proven to be a two-time loser. But with Trump, you never know.

If Harris loses, then all the second-guessing will begin in earnest on the Democratic side. Harris will be classified as a weak candidate who couldn't do what Joe Biden had done -- beat Donald Trump. This will likely manifest itself in multiple ways: "she lost because she was a woman and the electorate is still too misogynistic," to "she lost because she was a person of color and the electorate is still too racist," to "she lost because she picked Tim Walz as her running mate," to "she lost because she didn't have the political chops to win." That's not even a complete list -- there will likely be all kinds of arguments vying to explain a Harris loss. Also, the abbreviated process of choosing her after Biden stepped back will be relitigated in the political press no end -- all the pundits who were pushing hard for a "mini-primary season" where various Democratic candidates tried to prove their worth before the convention will all be part of the "We told you so!" chorus.

This election, American voters will be faced with the choice of a candidate who has been campaigning for the job for a very long time now and a candidate who has had the shortest presidential campaign in all our lifetimes. To say that the 2024 campaign season has been a very unusual one is, in fact, an understatement.

"Unusual"? In March 1968 when Lyndon Johnson announced he would not seek "nor accept the nomination," Vice President Hubert Humphrey also didn't run in a primary. Humphrey sought the backing of party leaders while McCarthy, RF Kennedy (until his murder) and others sought the Democratic nomination through the (stupid) caucuses and primaries.

So are you saying we have reached the point wherein 1968 is not modern times?

I don't see the big deal here about Harris becoming the nominee without having won in a primary. What if Biden had passed away having secured the nomination? On the flip side, what if that absolute idiot in Butler, PA, hadn't missed his intended target within weeks of the Republican National Convention? I would wager the Republican Party would have replaced their presidential nominee in similar fashion and not necessarily with a candidate who won a single vote in the Republican primaries.

Although I've literally asked hundreds of them, I haven't heard a single right-wingnut who believes JD Vance should not be allowed to run on the Republican ticket, even though he also never won a single vote in the presidential primaries... although they prattle on endlessly and whine incessantly that Harris shouldn't be allowed to run on the Democratic ticket. They repeatedly puff up their chests and explain to me how "it's different" with Vance because Trump chose him to be his running mate and has the right to choose whomever he wishes... at which point I ask them who the hell it is they believe chose Harris to be his running mate.

You have to repeatedly assist: So you think a private citizen has the right to choose his replacement while the actual sitting POTUS cannot? You can almost see the wheels turning in their heads as they connect the dots; you often have to spell it out for them because they quite literally don't have the ability to do it alone.

Not factually accurate.. There were no weapons involved.

If President Trump is soo bad as ya'all claim, why do ya'all have to lie to try and make him sound bad???

So where are his votes gonna come from?

You and the dishonorably discharged druggie non-veteran have the same delusion..

You must have missed ALL the media reports that shows black Americans and hispanic Americans are deserting the Demon'rat Party by the millions and supporting President Trump..

Even if THAT wasn't the facts of the here and now, Token DEI Hire Headboard Harris is running more than 10 points BEHIND Basement Biden in 2020...

So, even if President Trump DIDN'T have the millions and millions of former Demon'rat hispanic and black American voters, he STILL will beat Token DEI Hire Headboard Harris and Tampon Tim NO BALLZ Walz!!!!

So, no matter HOW you want to spin things, Russ..

Token DEI Hire Headboard Harris and Tampon Tim NO BALLZ Walz simply will NOT win the election..

The FATCS prove this beyond ANY possible doubt...

Yea, Demon'rats are going to go thru HELL of Monday Morning quarterbacking..

The FIRST question I'll be asking Liz and JL (since no one else will be around) is.. "Should Biden had stayed as the nominee??"

Harris will be classified as a weak candidate who couldn't do what Joe Biden had done -- beat Donald Trump.

CW, CW, CW.... Harris is ALREADY classified as a "weak candidate".. She was classified as that in 2019 and she is proving that the classification is dead on ballz accurate in the here and now..

Ya'all just refuse to accept the facts and reality..

Token DEI Hire Headboard Harris is the love child of McGovern & Dukakis..

She simply is INCAPABLE of beating President Trump in a free, fair and legal election..

    Just like Basement Biden...

The facts that prove this are as plentiful as they are conclusive..

On a more personal note, CW.. I feel I must apologize to you for all the hate mail you are getting from the Weigantian Trolls and Demon'rats.. They are a hateful and bigoted bunch and I am sure you are, once again, getting a bunch of hate male from them over me...

So, consider the heartfelt apology rendered..

So, there is even MORE news about the BS fascist claims from the Demon'rats..

Demon'rats (and a few reasonable Democrats) screamed to the high heavens that it was President Trump's "fascism" that "forced" Bezos to pull the Token DEI Hire Headboard Harris endorsement..

But of course, we come to find out that the Demon'rats were, once again, full of kaa-kaa…

Jeff Bezos addresses Washington Post endorsement fiasco, cites distrust in media led to 'principled decision'

"We must be accurate, and we must be believed to be accurate. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but we are failing on the second requirement. Most people believe the media is biased. Anyone who doesn’t see this is paying scant attention to reality, and those who fight reality lose. Reality is an undefeated champion. It would be easy to blame others for our long and continuing fall in credibility (and, therefore, decline in impact), but a victim mentality will not help. Complaining is not a strategy. We must work harder to control what we can control to increase our credibility.

"By itself, declining to endorse presidential candidates is not enough to move us very far up the trust scale, but it’s a meaningful step in the right direction. I wish we had made the change earlier than we did, in a moment further from the election and the emotions around it. That was inadequate planning, and not some intentional strategy.

The Washington Post and the New York Times win prizes, but increasingly we talk only to a certain elite. More and more, we talk to ourselves. While I do not and will not push my personal interest, I will also not allow this paper to stay on autopilot and fade into irrelevance — overtaken by unresearched podcasts and social media barbs — not without a fight. It’s too important. The stakes are too high. Now more than ever the world needs a credible, trusted, independent voice, and where better for that voice to originate than the capital city of the most important country in the world?

To win this fight, we will have to exercise new muscles. Some changes will be a return to the past, and some will be new inventions. Criticism will be part and parcel of anything new, of course. This is the way of the world. None of this will be easy, but it will be worth it. I am so grateful to be part of this endeavor. Many of the finest journalists you’ll find anywhere work at The Washington Post, and they work painstakingly every day to get to the truth. They deserve to be believed."
    -WaPoop Owner Jeff Bezos

Bezos denied there was any "quid pro quo" that motivated the decision and insisted the meeting the boss of his company Blue Origin had with former President Trump, which occurred the day of the announcement, was a regretful coincidence, flatly saying "There is no connection between it and our decision on presidential endorsements, and any suggestion otherwise is false."

So, there you have the FACTS, people (and trolls)…

So, the only question that remains, is will CW issue a retraction and will the Weigantian Trolls admit they were wrong??

Of course not.. Being a Democrat/Demon'rat means never having to admit when yer wrong..

2006 CW would have corrected the record in a stone cold minute.. :^(

But she has lost ground to him in the polls, as voters say they are less likely to be motivated by additional criticisms of Trump, whose flaws are well-known after standing in the national spotlight for more than eight years.

Demon'rats aren't saying anything new about President Trump that they haven't said since Jun 2015..

And they are AMAZED that the message isn't resounding better..

It's not resounding because it's the same old bullshit message that Demon'rats have been spewing ad nasuem for almost the last decade!!!

    NO SHIT it's not resounding!!

Frakin' retread'ed Demon'rats.. Their moronic and BS message is nothing new under the sun...

Not factually accurate.. There were no weapons involved.

Russ is obviously correct. Weapons including firearms were definitely involved, and the troll's persistent ignorance of facts continues unabated and glaringly on permanent display and archived in perpetuity.

The Department of Justice keeps running stats based on indictments, criminal trials, convictions, pleas, arrests, etc. All the cases are archived online and searchable.

    Michale,

Demon'rats are HOPING and PRAYING that SOMEONE can complete the job that TWO different Demon'rat assassins botched up..

As Bashi pointed out already, both had been Trump supporters in the past. The second “assassin” never bothered firing a single shot, so it really does make Trump sound like a puss to claim that he somehow “survived two assassination attempts”. Did you think he could be harmed by someone who did not bother to shoot at him?

Due to all your hate and bigotry, I am certain you are not thinking straight.

I AM GAY, MICHALE! GAY! I was born that way. So you need to get over it! I don't think “straight” because I am not straight.

You are supporting a convicted felon who learned to apply his makeup by watching Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire character do it. How many died because Trump refused to support wearing a mask during the pandemic and never admitted that it was because it would smear his makeup if he did? And the only reason he picked Vance as his VP was he loved how Vance applied his mascara. He is hoping Vance can really complete his look. All of your chest-beating bravado might get taken a little more seriously if you weren't backing Tammy Faye Baker’s uglier and dumber sisters.

Trump knows that he is losing! Why do you think that Trump spent a full day working behind the counter at a McDonald's? He NEEDS that experience to help him get a job in the prison’s kitchen!

Trump’s former administration has spoken out against his campaign more than anyone! THEY call him a fascist. THEY claim that he is not fit for duty. That he is a threat to our form of government. THEY stopped Trump from doing illegal things that would have damaged our nation during his first term and fear that there will be no one to do that if he is re-elected to a second term. Heck, Nixon’s own staff didn't abandon him the way Trump’s has! Trump is running to avoid dying behind bars! That why he’s not bothered to come up with any new ideas for this campaign. HE DOESN’T CARE!

Michale, it is clear that Harris being a mixed-race woman is at the core of your hatred of her. You are a sexist and a racist at heart. You are a Trump supporter making snide comments regarding HER supposed sex life — that is so far beyond hypocritical that it is actually breathtaking to witness!

Trump is going to lose the vote. Big time! Holding a rally as a homage to the Nazi Party’s rally prior to WWII was a great choice! Calling PR a “floating island of garbage” was brilliant! Tell me again about the millions of non-white votes he’ll be gaining this election!
