The Amorality Of The Republican Party
It's been clear for a while that the Republican Party has become completely amoral. Their partisanship has become more important to them than any quaint notions of right or wrong. To them, right versus left is all that matters.
Republicans now refuse to condemn pretty much anything that any other Republican does -- no matter how amoral -- starting at the top with President Donald Trump. The GOP has claimed for decades that they are the "law and order" party, but that all goes out the window when Trump pardons hundreds of people who assaulted police officers. Supporting cops is less important than supporting a fellow Republican. Morals are conveniently set aside whenever necessary.
I was reminded of this right after watching Trump's inauguration, when it was revealed that he had failed to put his hand on the two Bibles his wife held up beside him. Imagine the outcry from the right if Barack Obama had done such a thing when he was getting sworn in! But it was barely mentioned afterwards, since partisanship is far more important than moral outrage (which Republicans would indeed have shown if Obama had been the one to do it).
Some new shocking evidence of Republican amorality was just uncovered by the Washington Post today, in a story titled: "Johnson Aide Discouraged Hutchison Subpoena Over Concerns About Lawmakers' 'Sexual Texts'."
House Republicans have been trying to use Cassidy Hutchinson as some sort of leverage to get to Liz Cheney -- all of which is now a moot point (since Cheney was pardoned by Joe Biden on his way out the door). They set up an investigatory committee to come up with some sort of scandal they could use against the House January 6th Committee that Cheney served on, but so far this has been unsuccessful. The head of this new committee, Representative Barry Loudermilk, apparently had the idea of subpoenaing Hutchinson to force her to produce electronic communications and/or to testify in front of his committee. But it seems there was a problem with this plan, as the Post explains:
An aide to Mike Johnson advised the House speaker's Republican colleagues against subpoenaing former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson as part of their investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack in an effort to prevent the release of sexually explicit texts that lawmakers sent her, according to written correspondence reviewed by The Washington Post and a person familiar with the effort.
The aide intervened last June, citing concerns that a subpoena could expose the texts, according to the correspondence and the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk candidly about private conversations. Johnson revived the investigation this week as part of an effort by President Donald Trump and his allies to seek retribution against perceived political enemies, including those who investigated his role in the Capitol attack.

[A] Johnson aide told [Representative Barry] Loudermilk's staff that multiple colleagues had raised concerns with the speaker's office about the potential for public disclosure of "sexual texts from members who were trying to engage in sexual favors" with Hutchinson, according to correspondence produced at the time that detailed the conversation. Separately, a member of Johnson's staff told Loudermilk aides that Hutchinson could "potentially reveal embarrassing information," according to an email reviewed by The Post.

The Washington Post reviewed documentation reflecting the speaker's office's concern ahead of the June meeting between him and Loudermilk that corroborated the account of the person familiar with the effort to prevent the texts' release, but has not seen the purported sexually explicit messages. Nor has The Post identified who sent them or determined whether Hutchinson responded.
Got all of that? "Multiple... members... were trying to engage in sexual favors" with a woman who had been a witness in a congressional investigation. They sent "sexually explicit texts" to her. So it wasn't just Matt Gaetz, in other words, or some other equally-amoral House Republican, it was more than one of them.
Let that sink in for a moment.
This, from the party who championed the "moral majority," and who decried "moral relativism" (when it was being used in Bill Clinton's defense), and who has generally tried to position themselves as paragons of morality for the past half-century or so.
You'll note too that neither the speaker, his aide, or apparently anyone else reacted to this news by demanding a full investigation or a referral to the Ethics Committee or any other action which could have uncovered the scandalous and amoral behavior. Instead, the sole concern was covering it all up.
As the Post noted, the texts have so far not been made public. This leaves open the question of what exactly was offered -- not the "sexual favors," but any possible quid pro quo offered in exchange for them. Which would, if true, be a pretty blatant attempt at witness-tampering.
House Speaker Mike Johnson presents himself as a very pious, God-fearing man. That's his public persona. But this is impossible to reconcile with what the Post just reported. Members of Congress trying to exchange sexual favors with a committee witness (in exchange for what?) is clearly wrong. It may even be illegal. But Johnson helped bury the issue by warning Loudermilk of the problem before any subpoena was issued which might have publicly exposed this wrongdoing. He is thus complicit in the effort -- a co-conspirator after the fact.
Sadly, this story will likely not make much of a splash in the political media. There are so many other amoral things going on during Trump's first week that it will likely just end up as a footnote to it all. Right and wrong are no longer operative concepts to the Republican Party. As long as it is a fellow Republican, anything can be excused. Which is moral relativism taken to its extreme, really. And which is why it's pretty obvious that the Republican Party has become completely amoral.

I don't dispute your point that the GOP has been going south on the morality and ethics front in the past 10 years or so, especially in the years of Trump's ultimately amoral ascent.
But I think you ought to note explicitly that, as you say, the Republicans "championed" and "positioned" themselves as the moral majority, in the post-Sixties years - but as was clear to any observer, they were almost as hypocritical about it then as they are now.
Remember Bob Bauman (R-Maryland) being picked up for same-sex soliciting in 1980? Remember Newt Gingrich's cheating on his first and second wives with the women who would become his second and third wives, in the 1990s? Remember Rudy Guiliani's serial affairs, especially when he told his wife in 2000 that he was divorcing her in favor of his current girlfriend, via the medium of a press conference?
Not that Democrats are paragons, of course not. It's that, as you say, the Republicans somehow have claimed to be so, long before Trump arrived, and have proved not to be paragons in actual, real, life for a long, long time now.

If they're the people who have been ruling Washington with the same dreary bipartisan ideology that has kept the United States in this state of inertia and on the wrong track, according to most people, those people are petrified as they've been of Trump for so long. You're seeing the reasons why the establishment has both hated and feared Trump, because he doesn't abide by the bipartisan consensus in Washington that has kept this country on that wrong track, according to most voters.
But if you're the people who actually exercised your democratic right and voted for Donald Trump because you knew Washington wasn't working and you wanted someone to go in and break it and actually do so with great speed and assertiveness and not be constrained by these artificial rules they create to safeguard the status quo, then I think you're very happy. It's really the first time I've seen an election where a candidate stands up and makes a whole slew of promises about what they're going to do once they win, and then they win and they actually get into office and start doing exactly what they said they were going to do. That should be the norm, but it's really the first time I've seen it in at least decades.
The reason the Democrat elites are upset is not because he's taking decisive action. We have a very strong presidency in the United States that has only grown in power.
You can debate that, but that's the reality of what it is. What the Democrats are angry about and upset about is not that he's using it, but that he's using it for the purposes that he said he would use it for when running, namely to place America first, to stop worrying so much about what elites in European capitals and in Paris and in London and in Berlin think, but instead to start thinking about what's best for the United States, even if that means breaking rules, even if it means zooming into Davos and chiding publicly Jamie Dimon and the CEO of the Bank of America for what they're doing. These are the kinds of things they've been so worried about because these are the things that are effective.

President Donald Trump signed a number of border security measures on Monday
The U.S. southern border has seen a sharp drop in illegal immigrant encounters in the first days of the Trump administration, compared to the final few days of the Biden administration, multiple Department of Homeland Security sources tell Fox News Digital.
The number of Border Patrol encounters at the southern border in the first three days of the Trump administration is 35% lower than the final three days of the Biden administration, the sources said. The numbers do not include encounters at the northern border, or encounters at ports of entry by Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Office of Field Operations.

The left isn’t dead yet. But it’s getting there.
1. Immigration/border security/deportations. Outside of the economy, no issue hurt the Democrats more in 2024 than immigration. And the laxness on border security and quasi-open borders policy that resulted in massive waves of illegal immigration was very much a priority and product of the left. You’d think they’d be rushing to correct that mistake. Nah.
Take the Laken Riley Act which just passed Congress. Laken Riley was the Georgia nursing student who was murdered by illegal Venezuelan immigrant Jose Ibarra (recall that Biden, under pressure from the left, apologized for referring to illegal immigrant Ibarra as “illegal” as opposed to the approved nomenclature of “undocumented”). The legislation named after her provides for the detention of illegal immigrants charged with theft-related crimes, assault on a police office or acts causing death or bodily harm to an individual. Just 12 Democrats in the Senate and 46 Democrats in the House were willing to vote for the Laken Riley Act, with the left, heavily concentrated in blue states, conspicuous by its absence.
Outside of Congress, left reaction was predictable and vitriolic. Sarah Dohl, chief campaigns officer of the movement organizing group Indivisible had this to say:
And that’s just the Laken Riley Act! That Act is merely the opener for a variety of Trump administration moves to drastically tighten up border security and deport many of the illegal immigrants who are currently here, focusing initially on those with criminal records. The left will oppose all these moves, with appropriately inflammatory rhetoric, despite their general popularity. Indeed, deporting those illegals with criminal records is stunningly popular; a new New York Times poll finds 87 percent overall support for deporting such illegal immigrants including overwhelming support among surprising groups like Democrats (83 percent) and Hispanics (85 percent).
The simple fact of the matter is that it is impossible to solve the illegal immigration problem without changing the incentive structure for prospective immigrants by: (a) making it much tougher to enter the U.S. illegally, and (b) making it much tougher to stay in the country once you are here illegally. The public understands this while the left evidently does not or (more plausibly) just does not want to solve the problem. They are determined to die on this hill and die they will, perhaps dragging the rest of the Democratic Party down with them.
By all means, Democrats...

2. Identity politics/equity/”trans rights.” The contemporary left is deeply invested in these issues and shows little sign of backing down or compromising on any of them. Take the statement of Ben Wikler, the left’s favorite candidate for chair of the Democratic National Committee:
This does not seem like the statement of someone even willing to entertain the idea that identity politics is past its sell-by date. Or consider that it is Trump, not anyone on the left, who ringingly called for unrestricted free speech and for a society that is “colorblind and merit-based.” That’s because all these principles have become right-coded in the last period of time and are therefore verboten for anyone on the left to endorse. That’s crazy! As Jeff Maurer memorably puts it, these statements by Trump
That wasn’t the only challenge in Trump’s inauguration speech to left shibboleths and there are even more in his spate of executive orders. The left is inclined to fight each and every one of them because they believe history is on their side. But is it? I am doubtful the median working-class voter is going to greet the demise of DEI programs in their workplace, public institutions, or community with anything but delight.
Nor will they miss the pronoun police, the insistence that trans-identified biological boys should be able to play girls sports or the easy availability of “gender-affirming care” (e.g., puberty blockers, hormones, surgery) for minors. The Times poll mentioned earlier found that 80 percent of working-class (non-college) respondents opposed transgender birth males playing in women’s sports and 75 percent opposed allowing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to be prescribed for anyone under 18.
For all that, only two (2!) House Democrats—both conservative Hispanic Democrats from Texas—could find the wherewithal to vote for The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act which would prohibit the participation of biological men and boys in women’s and girls sports. Even Massachusetts Democratic representative Seth Moulton, who had raised questions about having biological boys in girls sports, did not vote for the bill presumably because of pressure from the left (they viciously attacked him for being a “Nazi”, transphobe, etc, etc.)
The left is determined to die on this hill and is willing to call out their army of enforcers to defend it. But the clear shift in public sentiment against their agenda makes defeat far more likely than victory here. Meanwhile, Democrats’ ability to adapt and move to the center on these issues will be seriously compromised while the left is busy dying on that hill.

3. Climate catastrophism/renewables uber alles/net zero. Trump has thrown down the gauntlet to the left on climate and energy issues. In his speech and in his executive orders he has made clear his intention to untether domestic energy production from regulatory and permitting obstacles and de-emphasize Biden administration policies centered around renewables and electric vehicles. He promises energy abundance and low energy prices. The left hates this but the fact of the matter is that such an approach is far closer to what the public wants—especially what the working class wants—than the left’s quasi-religious commitment to a rapid renewables-based clean energy transition.
This can be easily seen by reviewing public opinion data on climate and energy issues. Here’s a refresher:
A recent YouGov survey designed by myself and Roger Pielke found that, by 74 percent to 26 percent, working-class voters prefer an energy approach that uses a mix of energy sources including oil, coal, and natural gas along with renewables to an approach that seeks to phase out the use of oil, coal, and natural gas completely.
In terms of the energy they consume, cost and reliability are way, way more important to working-class voters than possible effects on the climate. Given four choices, 41 percent of these voters said the cost of the energy they use was most important to them and 35 percent said the availability of power when they need it was most important. Just 17 percent thought the effect on climate of their energy consumption was most important and 6 percent selected the effect on U.S. energy security.
In terms of proposals to mitigate the effects of climate change, getting to “net zero” as quickly as possible is relatively unimportant to working-class voters. Asked to consider proposals to reduce the effects of global climate change, these voters were least likely to say “getting the U.S. to net zero carbon emissions as quickly as possible” was very important to them personally (26 percent), fewer than said “limiting the burden of regulations on business” was very important (33 percent). Working-class voters were most likely by far to say keeping consumer costs low (66 percent) and increasing jobs and economic growth (60 percent) were very important aspects of climate mitigation proposals.
Consistent with many other surveys, the YouGov survey found that climate change as an issue has very low salience to working-class voters. Voters were asked to evaluate a list of 18 issue areas and rate their priority for the president and Congress to address in the coming year. As a “top priority,” dealing with global climate change ranked 16th out of these 18 areas among working-class voters, well behind strengthening the national economy, fighting inflation, defending the country from terrorist attacks, and keeping Social Security financially sound—and also behind reducing health care costs, dealing with immigration, improving the educational system, keeping energy costs low, reducing the budget deficit, reducing crime, improving how the political system works, improving the job situation, strengthening the military, dealing with the problems of poor people, and dealing with drug addiction. The climate issue only ranked above global trade and issues around race.
Finally, by 30 points (59 to 29 percent) working-class voters flat-out favor more domestic production of fossil fuels like oil and gas. But only 15 percent of these voters are aware that the Biden administration increased oil production on federal lands. However, when informed that the U.S. has, in fact, increased domestic production of oil and gas in the last several years, they are delighted. Almost three-quarters (73 percent) of working-class voters said “this is a positive development, which brings good jobs for U.S. workers, ensures our energy supply and helps the U.S. support our allies who need similar resources” compared to 27 percent who thought “this is a negative development, which brings more pollution, climate change, and continued reliance on fossil fuels.”
In short, Trump is likely to shore up his base, rather than lose support, with his energy proposals. Meanwhile, the usual suspects on the left have already denounced his moves as undercutting the sacred quest to stop climate change, lining the pockets of evil fossil fuel companies and even (somehow) raising grocery prices. This hill, too, is evidently one they are willing to die on rather than compromise in any way on what is likely to be an extremely popular quest for energy abundance. And here too the left is likely to be decisively defeated as they expend vast amounts of money and effort defending the indefensible and kneecapping the ability of their party to come up with an alternative that can actually compete with Trump and his party.
Such is the nature of today’s left—divorced from the working class but intimately connected to the leftist strongholds of the professional class. The latter connection has kept them blissfully unaware of how far outside of the public opinion mainstream their current commitments are and therefore how quickly the hills they are defending could be overrun. That’s happening right now but the left seems determined to fight on to the bitter end.

The civilizational inflection point in our cold civil war happened sometime between Donald Trump's second inaugural address on Monday and the end of his new presidency's second day on Tuesday. At some indeterminate moment between Monday's soaring midday speech, in which the first nonconsecutive two-term president in over 130 years artfully took a sledgehammer to the entire Obama-Biden era legacy without so much as uttering the men's names, and Tuesday's epochal executive order coming as close as legally possible to banning wokeism throughout the republic, the war ended. And as with the English capturing New Amsterdam from Peter Stuyvesant and the Dutch centuries prior, it happened without firing a single shot.
The maestro of Mar-a-Lago is known to fancy the Village People hit "Y.M.C.A.," but perhaps the more apropos tune to blast at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this week is Queen's anthem "We Are the Champions."
Let's take a step back.
Barack Obama, a Chicago radical in the Saul Alinsky/Bill Ayers mold, declared war on America during his 2008 presidential campaign. We know he declared war because he more or less said it: He vowed on Feb. 19, 2008, to "fundamentally transform America," and one does not seek to "fundamentally transform" that which he loves and seeks to conserve. If that Freudian slip was our cold civil war's Fort Sumter, then Obama's presidency that followed was the extended opening campaign. Indeed, Obama did "fundamentally transform" America: He passed the nation's largest new entitlement program since the Great Society, maligned cops and soured race relations, helped constitutionalize same-sex marriage, realigned our Middle East interests toward the fanatical Iranian regime, and more.
The first Trump presidency was, in many ways, the American people's reaction to the rise of the woke Obama-era Democratic Party. The first Trump administration, for all its occasional internal dysfunction, brought a welcome course correction back toward normalcy and sanity: The economy was revving, the border was secure, and there were no new foreign wars. The tweets may have been a bit "mean," for the pearl-clutchers who care about such things, but on an objective basis, things were really going quite well. That is, until the Wuhan virus arrived, St. George Floyd the Martyr had his fateful traffic encounter with Derek Chauvin, and the "Great Awokening" kicked into lightspeed.
Joe Biden won a questionable election and proceeded to weaponize COVID-19 vaccines, the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol jamboree, race, religion and so much more to finish the job once and for all against the Americans Obama so aptly demeaned as "bitter" clingers and Hillary Clinton ridiculed as "deplorables." The Biden presidency, which saw both a vice president and a Supreme Court justice selected solely due to their status as "women of color," embodied Peak Woke. And true to their antebellum race-centric partisan forebears, race-centric Biden-era "DEI" Democrats fought hard -- a four-year-long Pickett's Charge.
But it's now all over. Trump won America's cold civil war by adapting an old Reaganite mantra from the days of the actual Cold War against the Soviet Union. The Gipper proclaimed his bold Cold War strategy, differentiating himself from Henry Kissinger and the detente crowd, with this memorable line: "We win and they lose." It is hardly an exaggeration to say that mentality, and that national policy, won the Cold War.
At some point during his four years in the political wilderness -- perhaps around the time Biden and Jack Smith tried to incarcerate him, or perhaps around the time an assassin came within millimeters of murdering him on national television -- Trump decided to adapt Ronald Reagan's succinct victory formulation. The result? This astonishing first week of the second Trump term.
The apotheosis -- the coup de grace for the woke beast -- was Trump's bombshell Tuesday evening executive order, "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity." In one fell swoop, Trump purged the crux of wokeism -- the neo-Marxist dichotomy of dueling "oppressed" and "oppressor" classes euphemistically known as so-called "diversity, equity and inclusion" -- from American public and private life.
Diversity-crats from the deep state to the Fortune 100 boardroom to the Ivy League all now face the same reality: Get out before it's too late. Get out before the lawsuits start. Get out before Trump reprises his old "The Apprentice" TV role and yells, "You're fired!"
And so the mass resignations have commenced. They will only accelerate from here. It's all over. Hallelujah!
In his 1951 farewell address to Congress, Douglas MacArthur said that "in war, there is no substitute for victory." Maybe it's time for Trump to add a bust of MacArthur in the Oval Office, right next to the recently returned bust of Winston Churchill. A Mississippi district attorney proposed new legislation Wednesday to pay bounty hunters a reward for helping to deport immigrants in the country illegally.
