Orwellian 'Government Efficiency' Trainwreck At Social Security Administration
Without a doubt, we now live in Orwellian times. Anyone who runs afoul of the Dear Leader must be punished. The truth is whatever the Dear Leader says (even when he contradicts something he earlier said). We don't have a Ministry of Truth (yet), but we do have Truth Social. We have always been at war with Canada, and Russia has always been our friend, right? The past is being rewritten, erasing any mention of the trans people who were instrumental in leading the Stonewall Riots, and any mention of why pioneers like Jackie Robinson weren't considered just some random baseball star. Maybe Rosa Parks will be next: "She was just some woman on a bus... not really sure why some woman on a bus is historic, but everyone remembers her name for some reason...." In all this Orwellian flood, though, the one that stands out for me is the up-is-down nature of the richest man in the world absolutely destroying major government departments in the name of "government efficiency." That one really takes the Orwellian cake, as it were.
As is usual in these unsettled times, there are so many scandals breaking all at once that it's easy for one to get snowed under by the others. Which is why I'm taking a break from the massive national security breach scandal of the week to highlight an extensive report from the Washington Post on how the Social Security Administration is being gutted, because this is only going to become bigger and bigger over time (as more and more people try to deal with them). One quote in particular leapt out at me, from an employee in an Indiana S.S.A. office lamenting what has happened in a striking way: "We used to be efficient."
Up is down. A government office that used to be efficient is now so dysfunctional that it is being snowed under and things are falling by the wayside -- all because the Orwellian group supposedly dedicated to "government efficiency" screwed everything up so badly.
Here's how the article opens:
The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month because the servers were overloaded, blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging in to their online accounts. In the field, office managers have resorted to answering phones in place of receptionists because so many employees have been pushed out. Amid all this, the agency no longer has a system to monitor customer experience because that office was eliminated as part of the cost-cutting efforts led by Elon Musk.
And the phones keep ringing. And ringing.
And this is just the start, mind you. Things are going to get worse for seniors, the more Musk mucks around with everything. But of course, Musk is being aided and abetted in this dismantling of a previously-efficient government agency by the guy who is now leading it, Leland Dudek. The previous leaders refused to allow Musk access to data that is supposed to be private (by law), so of course they were all fired and Dudek was installed (since he had actually been eager to help the Musk team). From the article, Dudek acknowledged that Musk is really in charge of the agency now and that their phone service "sucks." Here's what he's been up to:
Leland Dudek, who became acting commissioner after he fed data to Musk's team behind his bosses' backs, has issued a series of rapid-fire policy changes that have created chaos for front-line staff. Under pressure from the secretive Musk team, Dudek has pushed out dozens of officials with years of expertise in running Social Security's complex benefit and information technology systems. Others have left in disgust.
After a federal judge ruled that Musk's tech-bros couldn't access the Social Security data, Dudek threatened (in a snit) to just shut down the entire agency in protest.
More evidence of Orwellian language being deployed: Musk is obsessed with digging out Social Security "fraud" that largely just does not exist. There are tiny amounts of fraud, but nothing like what the Dear Leader spent a goodly chunk of his recent address to Congress lying about. There simply are not tens of millions of people over the age of 100 still receiving benefits from Social Security. But try telling that to Musk (or to the Dear Leader). Musk has yet to produce any evidence of fraud for any of the departments he's been gutting; instead of evidence, he just spreads wild rumors that are pretty easily debunked.
The whole "waste, fraud, and abuse" refrain is (as it always has been, in Washington) nothing more than a political smokescreen. Musk wants to dismantle major portions of the federal government, period. And in a very short period of time, he has done so to the S.S.A. Instead of fighting "fraud," here's what is really happening:
In Baltimore, an employee who works on critical payment systems said nearly a quarter of his team is already gone or will soon be out the door as a result of resignations and retirements. Talented software developers and analysts were quick to secure high-paying jobs in the private sector, he said -- and the reduction in highly skilled staff is already having consequences.

His team is also called on to fix complicated technology glitches that stop payments. But many of the experts who make those fixes are exiting.
"That has to get cleaned up on a case-by-case basis, and the experts in how to do that are leaving," the Baltimore employee said. "We will have cases that get stuck, and they're not going to be able to get fixed. People could be out of benefits for months."
And also:
Alarmed lawmakers are straining to answer questions back home from angry constituents. Calls have flooded into congressional offices. AARP announced Monday that more than 2,000 people a week have called the retiree organization since early February -- double the usual number -- with concerns about whether benefits they paid for during their working careers will continue. Social Security is the primary source of income for about 40 percent of older Americans.
Trump has said repeatedly that the administration "won't touch" Social Security, a promise that aides say applies to benefit levels that can be adjusted only by Congress. But in just six weeks, the cuts to staffing and offices have already taken a toll on access to benefits, officials and advocates say.
Here's some even-worse Orwellian excuses, as if that weren't enough:
Dudek, who was elevated from a mid-level data analyst in the anti-fraud office, hurried to cut costs when he took over in mid-February, canceling research contracts, offering early-retirement incentives and buyouts across the agency, and consolidating programs and regional offices. Entire offices, including those handling civil rights and modernization, were driven out. The 10 regional offices that oversee field operations were slashed to four.
"I do not want to destroy the agency," he said in an interview Monday. "The president wants it to succeed by cutting out the red tape to improve service while improving security."
Service, however, has decidedly not been improved. Here's what one lawmaker had to say about the blowback he's already been getting:
"What's going on is the destruction of the agency from the inside out, and it's accelerating," Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) said in an interview. "I have people approaching me all the time in their 70s and 80s, and they're beside themselves. They don't know what's coming."
King's home state has the country's oldest population. "What they're doing now is unconscionable," he said.
Phone services won't be allowed anymore for standard services, forcing seniors to travel to Social Security offices -- dozens of which are being closed. As a result, field offices are seeing "exponential growth" in people walking in the door. Call wait-times are hours long ("Some callers report being on hold for four or five hours"). Callback wait-times are just as long. The Post called in 12 times just as a test, and they were given callback options on only three of those calls -- likely because the wait times for that day had grown so long they stretched beyond the close of business for the day. As a result, at 9:00 in the morning, "the phone lines are jammed." People are being told to use fax machines (!) to send in their paperwork -- not exactly the cutting-edge technology Musk blithely talks about.
Which is why I end with the quote that leapt out at me from the article. This is from an employee in an office in Indiana with "a staff of less than a dozen that is responsible for nearly 70,000 claimants across the state." A front-line worker, in other words. Who can clearly see through the Orwellian nonsense coming from Musk:
The employees, with no training yet on the impending changes, have few answers. "I hope we're going to be here," the employee tells caller after caller. "But I can't guarantee anything."
Complicated benefits cases are falling by the wayside, the employee said. Online claims, which are completed by field staff, are piling up.
"There is just no time to breathe or get anything else done," she said. "We used to be efficient."
That could wind up being the epitaph for a whole lot of federal departments, once Musk is through with them. Government actually being efficient will become a thing of the past for millions of Americans, thanks to him.

I have to imagine that the destruction of the Social Security administration will outrage the general public, including a lot of sincere Trump supporters, to the point that Congress may start to push back against President Musk being president.
Not sure how they would do that, but in theory Congress is still a co-equal branch of government with the presidency.
